Anyone who says they weren't surprised is NOT automatically a bad person or a bad fan. Please! Some of us are just rational. She was with Nagase for 7 YEARS and didn't marry him; you really think we were gonna be excited and confident when she married a foreigner (who isn't planning on moving to Japan) after 4 months? Come on!
Yeah, there may be such a thing as love at first sight, but even that kind of love requires nurturing and time to grow. Ayu always seems like such a smart, exacting woman...to hear she had something like a shotgun wedding just blew my mind. Why couldn't they wait until they had figured out their life together first? What was the big frikkin' hurry? I do not believe that Ayu ever seriously planned to drop her Jpop career and live in LA. I trust her words, but I don't think she put enough thought into her actions. I don't know either of them personally, and I don't want to act like I do, but I and everyone else is entitled to make a judgement. That's what Ayu and every other celebrity accepted when they became celebrities. And just like I would be honest with a friend, I'm being honest with Ayu (although she can't hear me) because I respect her. So stop making this some lame fan competition about who's the most supportive and proper. Everyone here is disappointed in this news, and no one wants to see Ayu suffer. I sincerely hope that she had an AIRTIGHT prenuptial agreement.

The formality makes it seem like a basic translation, the mistakes make it seem unprofessional. I remember thinking during last CDL when Timmy made his resolutions in English she said 'yeah' at the right times and laughed at the right points. She's at that weird stage where she understands basic English near fluently I think. I mean 2007, she seemed OKish in the CNN interview. From their she had her 'ASIA is one' shtick, a marriage, English messages and a twitter. She's obviously got herself taught (Good God, that was worse than Kumi English but y'all know what I mean LOL).

I think in Ayu's case with Nagase is that maybe she wanted to marry but he didn't. (They got matching tattoos.) Or maybe he couldn't. I hear that the agency he's from (Johnny & Associates) has a strict hold on their idols when it comes to girlfriends & marriage. She really did look like she was in love with Manny & maybe she felt "old" & had to get married. (Cultural differences...) I was shocked when she got married & now I'm shocked she got a divorce. I don't see why he couldn't just move to Japan, at least until she was ready to leave. (Is he really trying to be an actor? I just thought he was a model. He could have tried been a model in Japan. :p) I really think that if they weren't celebrities, it might have worked out (even if Ayu didn't want to leave Japan). Of course, then again, if they were normal folks who are engross in their careers then yea, it wouldn't work. I wish them both the best & no hard feelings. Divorce is horrible & I'm sure it sucks even more with the media talking about.

I was so sad when I read her entry this night befor going off to bed.
well, me too.. I can say that I felt it would end like this. When she released FIVE and I read lyrics to those songs like BRILLANTE and Why? I felt like she was talking about Mannie especially that part of BRILLANTE with "good-bye" in different languages... and when she stopped twitting him and posting their pics... I was never actually interested in her marriage, I tried to avoid this part of her life, because it's her personal life. And she's still ayu. I can't judge her. I want her to be happy. The only thing I regret is that she doesn't seem to have a baby in near future which I secretly hoped to be born this year or next ~.~ And it seems like she'll come back to her normal way of life and career with a huge promotion, TV appearances, all that stuff we kind of missed last year. and don't call me senseless, but as long as she created all this media buzz, I hope we'll get news about her new release very-very soon. Well, life is not over. Let's hope she'll be happy with someone different!

Some of the comments I've read seem so silly to me. Regardless, the whole relationship start to end was kept in relative secrecy, so I don't think we'll ever know how strong or weak the relationship was at any point or what many of the reasons were for breaking it off. I personally never liked Mannie (he always seemed creepy to me), but I didn't think the marriage would be as short-lived as it was. I'll support her in whatever direction she goes, nevertheless.
I do wonder how the Japanese media is reacting, though...

I understand her reasoning for not moving (the earthquake), but the fact that she says she was "forced" to leave him alone for a long time - a YEAR - is bs. I by no means pin this on just Ayu or Mannie, but in Mannie's case, it's wouldn't have been that hard for him to go visit her every once in a while between work; likewise, I'm sure Ayu could've worked a trip or two into her schedule if she really wanted to. She didn't HAVE to go to London to record as there's always LA. I just don't understand why it took Ayu until her anniversary to realize never seeing her husband again after they got married wasn't gonna work. And let's get real: we KNOW they didn't see each other after that because if they did, the reporters would've been all over it like they were when she went to Hawaii.
Also, as much as I want her to, I just can't see Ayu living in the US. She said so in her message there that she's way too attached to her home country, so even if she moved and the earthquake happened later, Mannie would've still been left alone anyway. Not to mention, she's AYUMI HAMASAKI. Unless she planned on making a US debut or retiring, I can't see how she'd successfully continue her career without being in Japan most of the time - which again leads to Mannie being alone. With all that said, I still can't help but think this marriage had some other reason behind it. But I am kinda sad, because regardless, I did like Mannie a lot. I hope they can work something out in the future.

I don't think i agree with AyumiAi... if mannie was going to be uncomfortable in that kind of relationship where Ayumi was making all the money then he would of never married her.

On January 4th, when Ayu landed in Hawaii for work, reporters called out, “Congratulations on your one year anniversary.” With a smile, Ayu replied, “Thank you. I’ve received many messages from my fans.” She also commented, “After my stay in Hawaii for work, I will go to another place in 2 or 3 days.” Sources say that Ayu returned to Los Angeles after this trip to discuss the divorce proceedings with her husband.

If that's true, Ayu can somehow manage to go to LA for two to three days to discuss divorce proceedings, but couldn't when they were married? Wow, sucks for Mannie. Imagine if that was indeed his first time seeing her after all that time.
