Honestly, Goku is the only thing wrong with it, casting-wise. (And the complete lack of Krillin.)
There aren't any japanese people in the original Dragonball - everyone's chinese, alien, or european, so. Takeshi Kaneshiro would be cool for DBZ Goku, but not DB Goku - in Dragonball, Goku's a little kid. (Making him high school age for this movie makes sense from a filmmaking/marketability standpoint, but that whole "innocence" part of the storyline had to die for it to happen.) I think, regardless of its accuracy to the original manga, it looks like it's gonna be a fun movie, and that's all it's supposed to be anyway, so. Seriously, I wish more people would give it the benefit of the doubt - they're knocking a movie they haven't even seen yet and I don't get that at all. I went to see a production of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" once, and it had a queen instead of a king. The woman's audition was so good that they rewrote the play so it was a queen. It was a FANTASTIC production of the play, with one character cast "wrong". Maybe Justin Chatwin just did such a good job auditioning that they made him a white kid instead of asian? You don't know.

You guys, honestly how many movies do you remember the theme song for?
People around the world aren't going to give a crap the theme is by Ayu, except for people who are waiting for it. No one is going to remember it after, unless they know one of us. This isn't going to do anything for her career except help it. Why is everyone so negative?

Just a few examples of songs that became some of my favorite songs after I discovered it as a themesong: - Anastacia - Everything Burns - Fantastic Four - Kou Shibasaki - Ikutsuka no sora - Chakushin Ari (one missed call) - Hoobastank - not listening - Resident Evil: Apocalypse that's all that shoots in my head right now, but there are probably plenty more. I dó agree that people will only remember it if it's GOOD. people won't remember it if it's bad, so it can hardly mean bad publicity for Ayu. They might remember it as a bad song but they'll forget it's from ayu. Last edited by Keiichi_JPU; 11th December 2008 at 10:01 PM. |

And this isn't even the place to bash the movie, make a thread in the entertainment section to bash the movie, this thread is about the fact that Ayu has a major, international tie-in, and nothing more =/

Also I don't fall for C.G. at all, I want substance, just like that movie cloverfield? it looked really cool, but the story and everything else was so awful. anyway, the collaboration probably won't do much for ayu, since there's still people who think that japanese is such a horrible language that it needs to be change to english in order to be good or praise or to succeed, I hope this move by ayu opens some minds about it, at least for the ones who go and see the movie. PS: I was never excited about this movie, now I'm just excited for ayu's song, I'd love to listen to ayu in my country, if someone buys me the ticket I'll go =P, and I give the benefit of doubt! sure it looks good but is not dragonball so far.

And I said the Goku was the only thing wrong casting-wise. And honestly it DOES seem to be one of the main reasons for people automatically bashing it. And the only movie theme song that I can think of that was made popular because of a movie when the artist hadn't had ANY previous exposure was "Stay (I Missed You)" by Lisa Loeb back in 1994.

But I honestly think that the people who are going to want to go see this movie are the kind of people who would at least have an idea who Ayu is to begin with, because they'd mostly be fans of the anime, and therefore, anime fans, and what anime fan in the US HASN'T watched Inuyasha?

I don't know if it launched her career, I think she was big before that, but I think it helped being in the top earning movie of all time.

Furthermore, it's in Japanese, at least for Americans, that puts a considerable distance between them and the song... Not counting in that they are going to see the movie...for...the movie... And if the movie does suck, which it probably will, with the exception of Piccolo, people are going to be talking about how much the movie sucked...not how great the theme song was... This is great because, if the song is great or even decent, it can only count in the positive for Ayu. It's not like it's a song used for a debut or something. So, really, it doesn't make THAT much of a difference. It's not like she's going to become popular because of it. The best thing that could happen is, the song will be great, everyone will give it great reviews despite the bad movie, and Ayu will consideran international debut. She's already considering it. This is just a tiny step forward. lol a bunch of long posts in a row O_O

I'm so happy if Ayu is singing the theme song because my favorite actress, Emmy Rossum is going to be Bulma in this movie!
I can't wait to see it!

OMG, I hope this movie won't end up a cheesy movie. RUle sounds great though. Wonder what kind of rock song it would be
edit: I just watched the trailer, OMG it SUX.... Ayumi-san.... OMG I hope this won't drag her career down. OMG... OMG... this is too unbelievable. OMG... Why the heck they make a live action movie, dumb move, who's gonna watch it. I won't spend my money for that cheesy, b-class movie. OMG... Unless miracle happens and it turns out a pretty good movie, I certainly pass this movie. OMG... sorry Ayumi-san But, anyway, this IS my first impression, I might as well change my opinion later on...

I doubt that having Rule as the theme song is going to do anything for Ayu's popularity overseas. It might rake in a few fans here and there but it's not going to be anything major or amazing.
Look at Utada-- Kingdom Hearts was super, super popular and Simple and Clean / Sanctuary were both in English, but all it did was create a larger fan base for her overseas. I don't think Rule will do anything more than that for Ayumi and Rule probably won't gain her as many fans as Simple and Clean or Sanctuary did for Utada because... a.) A lot of the times, people don't pay attention to the theme song (and if it's played in the credits and not the beginning, people will be leaving.) Whereas in a video game setup like Kingdom Hearts you hear the song at the beginning and end of the game and for any fan of the game, it made the song a classic. b.) Again-- it being in Japanese isn't going to spark as much curiosity. Americans, for the most part, just aren't interested in foreign music. Had Hikari been used for the American release of KH1, I can't say I would've looked it up. At the point I had never heard a Japanese song in my life. Idk... I just think people seem to be either totally against this or way too excited about it. I just wanna hear Ayu in the theater~

No offense I like Ayu and the Dragonball series but this is ridiculous. X_x Even though there isn't a solid American fanbase for Ayu, people who hear her for the 1st time (if they even pay attention) might get a bad first impression...Mostly this is me being overreactive, but I have a bad feeling about this.
Well, at least Ayu will be heard by the American public for the first time. ^^;
