How many ELT performances other than Fundamental Love (know for her straining, particularly at a-nation clips) ones have you seen to make the generalisation that her live singing sucks?

And many many artists can perform lives to a decent standard other than just Chihiro Onitsuka.

People need to stop making excuses for her, born to sing or not, she can at least try to spend some time to improve. And she has gotten more stable recently, only it's gone back down this year.

I don't think there's any reason to worry. I think its fantastic that in Japan all the artists sing live on music shows. As has been said in this topic before, its normal that singers sound a little off during some live performances so its to be expected. Therefore, if an artist is a little off-key its proof they are making efforts by singing live and why Japanese people don't mind. In the west we (or maybe our record companies) seem to think its better an artist mime than sound a little weak while singing live. I feel the opposite - I am sure many of us on AHS do also, right?

Someone said Ayu was more concerned with her appearence than her performance. I'm sorry to sound rude but that is totally untrue. Ayu has consistantly said she makes great effort in ever aspect of her career. Yes, its no secret image is a very important part of "Ayumi Hamasaki" but what people seem to ignore is that voice, her lyrics and her music mean just as much - if not more.

If it wasn't for her image, she wouldn't be half as popular as she is now.

Anyways, I agree with ~K+, bad singing is bad singing, no matter how much effort the person puts in. I mean, is it alright to give a record contract to someone who's completely off-key? IMO, it's not, but it's happened thousands of times.

I didn't say she shouldn't have a record deal tho, she proved her worth as an artist before.

I often mostly listen to her studio tracks anyway. At least ayu makes more attractive songs in my opinions than certain artists that sing very well but have a discography full of uninteresting songs (misia). I honestly listen to a lot of artists that don't have that much of amazing vocals and whose live performances are not really that great : mika nakashima, hitomi, etc (some of them even have a catastrophic vocals live - shiina ringo, but I still love their songs). It's not like it kills me or anything, they put up good songs and that's what I want to listen to, not to a orchestrated opera full of technical perfection sang by the most perfect diva in the world but whose song as a whole fails to impress me. I've never really cared that much for ayu looks either, if she were ugly and dressed really bad I would still like the stuff she puts up.

You read my mind; I aggree completely.

The CDTV performance of Carols was dead on to the studio recording, she was perfectly on key the whole time. And she didn't go off key for Seasons much at all, she just took artistic liscense and made the song a little different from the way she sings it every other time. I'd rather her try something new for a song and it potentially be bad then just the same freaking thing everytime like a robot.

I dun think that Ayu's perfomance is so bad!
I saw her perfomance at CDTV, that is quite good!!
You can't call a singer sing very well live!~
You see the singer in Taiwan ,all of them can't sing very well although in their concert!!

i thought that her performance on CDTV was better as well.....but i meant...the cd version DOESNT exactly sound like two different ppl singing it..in fact i was quite surprise seeing her sing moments live at CDTV and couldnt get the right key..same w/ Carols for the first verse
but for the most part...ayu still has an AWESOME voice...i just realli think she needs to put more effort in training her voice better...because i heard her sing Dearest Live..it's like that x-mas special..and it sounded realli perfect
from this i was also WONDERING if Ayu by any chance smokes..cuz if she does..she should REALLI quit..for her career

I thought that the CAROLS performances on both Pop Jam and CDTV are better that the studio version. Her voice in the studio version sounds like she's doing A musuem all again. About that SEASONS performance, I thought she should've performed it the way she did in STADIUM TOUR 2002A.
The CAROLS performances are, IMO, much better than the INSPIRE performances as well as the a-nation clip.

I agree her vocal performances aren't that really great the worst of the worst was when I saw a clip of her performing in concert to her song "July 1st" and she sounded so off key, flat and HORRIBLE! And I LOVE that song! O.O

Her vocals gt a bit different in the Music Station one and she used a bit more vibrato in the song but I watched her CDTV performance today and it was pretty close to the studio track. There were times I was even wondering if it wasn't a playback but it surely wasn't.
