Don't get A BEST, youl'll regret it when you start buying al her albums. Her best Album IMO of the ones I've heard is "I am...", it's very varied and the songs are really good overall. If you want a mostly dance/trance album I'd go for LOVEppears, but from the songs youve heard and liked so far (which are mostly pop/rock) I'd go for I am..., MY STORY or Rainbow. I woulden't go for a mini-album as my firt ayumi hamasaki album.

I guess it depends a bit on what kind of music you like. If you are looking for more J-pop songs, I would suggest "LOVEapperears" or "Duty". For more J-rock like songs, "I am..." would be a good choice. Personally I like "I am..." the best. Not only because of the wide variety in songs, but also because a lot of songs were composed by Ayumi.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I think I'm going to go with I am.. as my first choice since everyone says it's really good, and then after that I'll try duty. Now I'm all excited to get it lol!

Um... her albums have themes

Rainbow- fantasy like
Duty- Dramatic, grand(?)
LOVEppears- Upbeat, hyper and sunny
A Song for XX- Wintery and anime-ish.

Well, that's personally how I feel about some of them although I might not be accurate. I think I'd recommend Duty as a start..

Anyway, I'd advise you not to let all the I am... praises get to you. When I first started out as Ayu fan (last year) everyone was raving about how wonderful and incomparable I am.. was, so when I bought and played it for the first time I was expecting to be bowled over by its greatness but ended up getting bored. Could be a difference in taste though, nevertheless I am... is a great album though I wouldn't call it the No. 1.

For me, its a draw between I am.. and Duty.

Duty because I think it's her most consistent album, although it's very short compared to I am.... I like all of her songs on it, and its a bit dark.

I am because it had her best singles on it, and naturally will always be my favourite Ayumi song.

Well so far I've heard Moments, No way to say, I am..., STEP you, Is this LOVE?, Heaven, and a remix of Depend on you. Also I really luv the lyrics to this one song called Teddy Bear...It so sad yet so creative!!
Er, if you like Teddy Bear, you need to listen to Memorial Address, which is sort of like the sequel to Teddy Bear. T-bear is about her dad leaving when she was a little girl, and Mem Address is about him dying before she could find him again. The live version of this song is really amazing, if you get the one where she's ina bigg floofy red dress and she gets really emotional.

Anyway, I can't pick her best album!!! I think Dute, I Am, and Love Appears are probably the best technically, but I have a special fondness for My Story. I love Inspire and Moments soooo much, as well as the non-single Honey. It's soooo cute!

"I am..." is highly considered one of her best ever. It's got some of her greatests hits. So I think your choice is rather well made ^^
