you forgot about Amuro Namie... she was the the queen before Ayumi, i guess. she lost the throne now - but imagine she was once loved as much as Ayumi is now, girls in Japan just wanted to be like her.
and i really do wonder who's gonna be next... i think a new queen should appear a bit before the end of Ayumi's career -- Ayu appeared in 1999, when Namie was still "there", though not that powerful anymore. some people here said Mika Nakashima isn't as good as Ayu/Hikki -- obviously, she IS! she does very different music, we can't put them together and compare, but she has the class and quality. she might not be as mainstream or popular as Ayu/Hikki, but she's there and it shows.

Well.... Namie Amuro may have been very popular before Ayu's era, but she is NOWHERE near Ayu's stage.. Utada Hikaru also is not a queen. She is a musician. If you'd ask people in Japan: "who is ayumi hamasaki?" they would say "A superstar / the queen of jpop", but if you'd ask "who is utada hikaru?" they would say "An amazing singer". And that's exactly what Utada is. An amazing singer, NOT some overproduced jpop idol pushed to the top to reign over Japan...
The only person that can be compared with Ayu's state is Yuming. Not many people know her anymore, though she is still highly respected in Japan. The respect that she has is amazing. Yuming too had many different faces like Ayu. But she also was a great singer rather than a hot babe. Anyway, Yuming left a great impact on Japan. Many and MANY artists still cover her songs that are just worth gold. Think of Sotsugyou Shashin, think of Haru yo, Koi.... Those are all Yuming. But that was long ago. Now it's Ayu. Ayu is much more powerful than any other artist ever in Japan. She has a way better image, she is produced way better and more modern than Yuming. She has way better looks, way more money into her songs. But Ayu does not yet have the enormous respect that Yuming has. But, just like Max Matsuura said, in 10 years Ayu's first hits will be seen as golden oldies, an she will be another Yuming. But first of course her stardom is fading. She was EVERYWHERE in Japan. On every corner, every billboard. She is a product. And that now is fading; the rest will come later. |

I'm just picking out this comment to restate what I've posted before. Ayu is not the all-important person that some people seem to think she is. She isn't the center of the Japanese cultural universe. I'm only hoping to add some perspective to this topic. |

maybe those girls are showing respect for ayu cause they are quiet, maybe ayu is intimadating. many love ayu. i went to guam for vacation last year and i met this beautiful 26yr old but she looked 17yrsold diving instructor named ayachan. she didnt speak much english so i was speaking to her in japanese, and i was asking her musical interests and she was just like "hamasaki ayumi", ayu has alot of influence. and in another instance i was vacationing in disneyland in california and i met students studying in overseas in california, i was speaking to them and i asked their musical interests and they also said "hamasaki ayumi" alot of people love ayumi. but there are some that not know of ayu very much like an acquaintance i met named chiesan she isnt very much into pop but more so into punk, she likes the michelle gun elephant, more into that scene. so maybe it depends on the scene? i dunno. but anyways everyone should love ayu cause they jsut should.

I'm kind of worried for ayu, as some people I know say that no japanese person they have met have liked ayu.. :\ [this person is japanese] And she says that Ayu sounds like a 3 y/o and can be compared to the likes of Hilary and Britney...

WAITWAIT
i think u shouldnt compare it like this... u have to see who are the other guests on that show... and in the 10th Sept music station, Kanjani 8 and Exile is there.. so perhaps.. the girls whom we saw are their fans... and another thing mayb i wanna point out ... this maynot be true but this is what i get from most of my fellow web friends... many johnny fans hate ayu.. =\ bcoz of sales...yeah.. no offence to johnny fans.. but this is what i got feedback from... so perhaps see this in a positive way.. perhaps they are not ayu fans thats why... so what if u are the most popular artiste? there will still be people who are not your fan, right? so cool down people =)

Best selling Japanese artists -
01. B'z; 71,878,000 02. Mr. Children; 46,207,000 03. SOUTHERN ALL STARS; 43,937,000 04. Ayumi Hamasaki; 41,074,000 05. DREAMS COME TRUE; 40,065,000 06. Yumi Matsutoya; 37,594,000 07. GLAY; 35,798,000 08. ZARD; 35,451,000 09. Hikaru Utada; 32,158,000 10. CHAGE & ASKA; 31,192,000 Most of those artists in the top 10 still sell great today. And Ayu is almost ahead of SAS, whom have been out 25+ years.. I think Ayu has a strong (and dedicated) enough fanbase to help her for another 10 years. Although a lot of people may hate her for whatever reasons, SHE STILL IS A DOMINATING ARTIST. I'm sick of these declining popularity threads.. Huh? I was talking just randomly about someone who said it recently.. x.x xD
Anyways, this wasn't meant to be a declining popularity thing, but more of a reaction to some public ayu hate xD I think she's still marvelous and <3 Zeo

I didn't like Ayu at first. I think it's normal though for someone as popular as her to have people hate her because she's everywhere. Some famous stars I can't stand because there EVERYWHERE. So thats probably why some people don't like her.

Namie : Yes they did clap and cheer when the host introduced Ayu
. But went quiet once the talk began. (this is the case for every celebrity. the audiences are usually very respectful in japan)

namie amuro=short skirts and tall boots
i love iti think that Ayu will only ever (if ever) decline in Japan, although i dont think she will. She will always have her fans overseas because for the reasons the japanese "hate" her, we don't have those reasons, like seeing her on TV in magazines, on billboards, etc. I think i would go crazt if i was in Japan and saw Ayu on TV... we are not overexposed to Ayu, its quite the opposite we want more... and i think Ayu will continue to make music for as long as she wants to, even if she has to do it without Avex.
