[question] What does kanji used to write "hamasaki" mean?

Ayu's name is written in hiragana, so it don't mean anything, right? But what do the 2 kanjis used to wrte her last name ("hamasaki") mean? Someone know maybe?

Although there is a way to write Ayu's first name in Kanji, I remember reading that she prefers writing it in Hiragana. Her last name consists of the characters "Hama" and "Saki", which I tried translating with an online translator:

‚_‚䂯 <--walking

‚͂܂³‚« <--Ahead ‚Ü

most likely not the exact meanings, but I'm sure someone like Masa would be able to help with this more than I could

•l - Hama means "beach" or "seashore"

¨č - Saki means "small peninsula"

Some online translators will translate this as "beach cape."

Hope this helps. I read a book on surnames of the world and the trend of creating a name based off of one or more geographical or natural occurances. This is the case in many, many cultures. There are always exceptions to the rule, of course. Definitely.

My grandma's surname is Hayashi, which means "woods" or "forest" though some dictionaries will translate it as "wooded grove." I dunno.

This information was all verified with a CASIO electronic Japanese-English dictionary and kanji look-up.

Cheers!

Names in Japan are very confusing when written. Basically, the parents can choose the hirigana they want for the name, and it does indeed have different meanings in how it's written.

So I'm not sure of Ayu's name's meaning, aside from "fantastic singer" and other such compliments, but I thought maybe this might help fill in some info. ^_^

ayumi written in chinese means steps

but the name also has meaning itself

aruku means to walk, when written in itz kanji form it is the same as the chinese name used for ayumi "bo" which means to walk/a step
ayu in a sense means steps and mi is beauty

It is possible that her parents decided that her name would be written in hiraganawhen she was born, as well. Some people literally have no kanji for their name. My aunt's name is written solely in katakana. Perhaps ayu's name has no inherent meaning (i.e. no kanji).

My name (Kohana) means little flower. I THINK I know the right hirigana for it, but I need to ask my father. Parents they can choose how it's written, and it's still pronounced the same.

actually, ayumi in chinese is "bu", which also means "step", not "bing-chi".

"bing-chi" is Hamasaki, her last name...
Japanese people's name order is the same as Chinese; last name first, follow by first name...
but pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~ put their first name first to sound more western...
so it's supposed to be "Hamasaki Ayumi", not "Ayumi Hamasaki"
well...that's all I know about name...
anyone mind correct me if I'm wrong about the name order?
