The Trilogy

I hate having to have someone explain things to me instead of figuring them out for myself. This includes interpreting Ayu's PVs and lyrics, among other things.

That being said, I'm unashamedly asking for help here concerning the famed trilogy of vogue, Far away, and SEASONS - connected by what some have called similar lyrical threads, maybe, and a (rather crappy) PV.

So can someone explain the connection to me?

Or at least tell me if I'm right in assumnig the connections - fleeting happiness and keeping memories between songs.

In vogue, she's reflecting on this man she once loved, and how he used to always make her feel at ease - she's singing from the future about the past and how the happy memories and time together would soon end and he would just start to fade (physically or emotionally).

Far away seems a tougher one to crack, though. To me, she seems to be looking back on how quickly her happiness with him seemed to slip away as they drifted apart. Then he left to find himself, and ever since, they haven't kept in touch, but she still thinks somehow, they're connected. And I guess maybe there's some sense of "I should be happy about the good memories we shared, but it still hurts that we can't create any more of those types of memories," but in that one part about her going back alone to the sea they'd once visited together, she's trying to keep the memories fresh in her mind.

SEASONS is Ayumi in the present, realizing (or at least assuming) her naivete in thinking that she could share her time with this man forever, but slowly starting to let go of what she'd lost over time. And it still hurts her, but she'll keep on going and enjoy at least having the memories to treasure at least by herself.



Something like that. Translations and her style of writing make it difficult sometimes to determine what exactly she's getting at. But am I close, at least? Any suggestions? Interpretations? Corrections? Is this even in the right forum? Bueller?!

There are many threads here about interpreting PVs....you could easily search for them.

I also think that you're also missing out on the last song that ties the Trilogy together: Ever Free. Apparently the person she has been talking about died, and she's at the funeral.

Ah. See, I didn't even realize ever free was tied into the Trilogy until you mentioned it. I never paid that song much mind before now and thus just neglected to look up the translation.

But you're right - it does seem to maybe tie up a loose end left in SEASONS, albeit in a sad way. (Also, why was it on vogue and not SEASONS if it serves as an epilogue?) Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Having become a fan around the time of the Trilogy's release (and since the story behind these three songs is one that made me a fan), I can tell you what I remember:

Ayu did say that the three songs were about looking at herself, as she'd been in the past, from the "front, back, and side" (just a way of saying three different angles, i suppose). She's not singing to or about a man in any case, it's to herself. ("ever free" is about her grandmother's death, not about herself, but ayu said herself that it belonged with the other three songs as part of the trilogy. It was kind of the keystone that held them together; perhaps because it's about a real loved one who died, and ayu has to think about that death to make sure she doesn't regret anything she does in her life before her death. That's conjecture, but it makes sense.)

The Trilogy is kind of her own response to re-considering retirement after the A single (which was her plan).

Basically, vogue is Ayu talking to her past self, who has made mistakes, and making predictions (rather dire ones) about her future in the entertainment business. Far away is about her regret that she sacrificed love and close friendship for the sake of going her own path (and the fear that it won't go anywhere, that it will all have been for nothing), and the first half of SEASONS is her talking to her past self, and the second half is her kinda talking to her new singer self (or perhaps her career), going again into the prediction in "vogue" that her blossom (fame) will quietly fade, wilt, and die.

After the A single, you see, she'd written these rather depressing songs and didn't really think about how sad they were until afterwards. She probably thought how the situations she wrote about in A, though in the past now, are feelings she still has, only on a different level and regarding a different aspect of her life. To sum up, A was personal-life stuff, and The Trilogy are songs about professional-life stuff. Plus, she was about to stop singing after A, but then LOVEppears took off and she became huge, and realized she had fans and a responsibility that came with the power. She had it, and KNEW it was going to fade and die eventually, but still went forward with it, doing what she felt she had to (which is also where the album title "Duty" comes from).

Really? Wow, I didn't know that! Thanks. ^^ I thought "ever free" was also talking about herself. That it served as an "end of adolescence" song. (Concerning the clip shown during the 2000 TOUR: The person in the coffin is her... But maybe she took the symbolism of the song and made it her own.)

And my source for alot of this is ayu sites that don't exist anymore... the "front, back, and side" quote is something I read at AYUppears years ago and that site's been dead for ages. The ever free being about her grandmother thing, I read at a site called "Hamasaki Ayumi, kaze ni nare!". I don't remember what his source was but I remember he had one...

And alot of it can be found in the form of quotes at masa's site, yes.
