What went "wrong" with RAINBOW?

I recently acquitred RAINBOW and gave it a listen through. I personally thought it was a great pop album, the tracks had a sort of different sound from Ayu and kind of stood out from each other. This got me to thinking "Is RAINBOW actually BETTER than I am...?" I know you guys regard I am... as the best effing thing Ayu has made and RAINBOW as a sort of turning point.

So... why is that?

I don't dislike RAINBOW, but I feel that the the majority of the tracks are fairly weak and just bore me.

RAINBOW is awesome. It has it's own share of good songs.

But I think I am.. is popular because they was the height of her popularty and she composed most of the songs on that album.

Really? I am... is my least favorite too.
Not that it sucks, but most of the songs sounded exactly the same, if not it was because of Ferry Corsten. I was actually glad Ayu did'nt make RAINBOW by herself.

RAINBOW is a freaking fantastic album AND it's also, at least to me, the last really great album of Ayu.

The single tracks were great. The pop tracks of RAINBOW (WE WISH, Real me, July 1st, independent) are some of her greatest and also her last few outstanding pop tracks. (Most of Ayu's pop songs after RAINBOW has been pretty bad...) The album tracks were definitely great (Close to you and Heartplace are some of my top favorite Ayu songs!). Not the mention that RAINBOW has the best interludes too!

The only tracks I don't enjoy that much are Dolls and Over.

I don't think it's as good as I am... but I am... isn't the best either IMO. Duty is the best to me.

Cl;ose to you is great! It's really soft. I've grown to like Dolls too, everywhere nowhere is great and Real me is brilliant too. I agree w/ asongforxx, as I consider them to be her last pop-out tracks

Her voice simply perfect in "Close to you".

This is how she should always sing her ballads. No need of loud vibrato. Soft is the way to go.

guess it boils down to personal preferences . Even though I'm not familiar with D.A.I's material (the band I mean) , could tell that RAINBOW's extremely D.A.I influenced (the guy from the band)

I like both albums actually . It represents a different sound & image that she came up with & I like the fact that both albums doesn't sound the same musically

I think people are very hit or miss with RAINBOW. They either love it or they don't.

People who don't imo are I am...-obsessed though.

lol makes me wanna start an I'm... thread, but.

I think I am... is regarded high cus of

*A BEST released during the prime, having singles in it
*the overrated M & evolution/massive amount of singles
*Her having composed X number of songs

I think each album offers something different , musically . It's definitely an experiment for every album ayumi puts out because people will either like it or hate it

Yeah...different! That's what i'm thinkin' too. Rainbow is a very awesome album by Ayu. And ofcourse, I am... as well. But my opinion, "I am..." is far more popular than Rainbow. and with regards to the sound/style/lyrics/blah blah, I love "Rainbow" more =)

Although I am... and RAINBOW are two of my top Ayumi albums, I like RAINBOW a bit more. I love the pop genre, and RAINBOW had a great selection of pop songs. Album tracks like Heartplace were also outstanding. I am... had a more rock-pop feel, which is good, but RAINBOW touched my bubblegum-pop heart.
