I can't rememeber the exact song when I first got into Koda Kumi, but it must have been near the end of her 12 singles era. I remember her announcing the Best - Second Session album, and then my Dad's friend (who was in Japan at the time) randomly sending me a bunch of albums, and it was one of them. The rest is history...

Discovered Kuu through Real Emotion as well. Saw the FFX-2 CGI opening sequence (Japanese Version) on some other PS2 game I rented - it was a bonus on the games menu to watch the opening sequence. I loved it immediately.

Kinda kept looking into her but never had anything totally WOW me after Real Emotion until she started the 12 singles project and I heard D.D.D. - after that, I was sold. D.D.D. was my favorite release. Driving my fave song. Favorite album, UNIVERSE.

I became a fan like 2 days before Alive/Physical thing came out. I remember that ended up being the last single of hers I listened to because I instead got familiar with everything that came out before then.

The first thing I actually bought of Kuu's was the MOON single, which I still love. Despite being a fan for quite awhile before that I only discovered the wonderful site of Yeasia until then, LOL. I thought previously that there wasn't anyway for me to buy her singles or albums, I was like "I WANT TO BUY HER MOOSIC WHYY D:" and then....yeah. I don't know why I didn't look for 'buy asian music' in google sooner, LOL. Silly me.

About the same time I saved up enough money so I could buy Kingdom, and I listened and watched the album for ages. Kingdom was my first and first favourite album from Kuu, I loved everything about it from when I heard about it, and when I finally got it in the post and I was really excited. I have very fond memories of that, hahaha.

In fact, I think I'm gonna rip the album in FLAC right now.

Kuu is the most liked by fans of non-Japanese music for me. It seems most of my friends/family who aren't into Japanese (my Mom, my sister, my raver buddies) all like some of Kumi's songs (Mom/Sister = D.D.D, Get Up & Move!!, Love Goes Like..., Lady Go!, SUPERSTAR. Buddies = Driving). I remember back in the day I had to put D.D.D, Love Goes Like..., Get Up & Move!! and Lady Go! on my Mom's iPod for her to run on the treadmill to in the morning. D.D.D was always the favorite of my Mom and sister. It was like EVERY single time my Mom asked "so who is this singing?" it was ALWAYS a Kumi song. "Koda Kumi" lol. NEVER once did she ask that question when I happened to be playing Ayumi. Damn it. One time I believe she even stated when I had Memorial address (take 2 version) playing in the car that it was "terrible".

Lol, it's about the same with my mum, at least she likes Kuu really much as well, loves to watch concerts from her with me. And other people here already mentioned that their mums or brother and sisters like her as well. I remember one mum being a big fan of her!
I don't know but I do have the feeling from all the japanese female singers Kuu would have the best chance to get popular here in the west.

Kumi's the only Japanese artist my mum and dad like to watch or listen to songs of. I've heard my mum singing her songs while she cleans or works. She'll watch some performances of JUJU and Miliyah if I force her but she hates Ayu. She's never gotten through a PV or live till the end, she either leaves the room or tells me to shut it up lol My brother doesn't mind Ayu though, but he loves Kumi and Lee Hyori.. but I think he likes their bodies more than their actual music :|

Ok, this is a totally new topic but I'm watching the Making Ofs on the TRICK DVD right now, and I had to laugh so much at kuu's "NO NO NOOOO~!" in show girl. In general, she seems to be very fun to work with.

Yes, but that's something she could work on.
Not that it matters, cause the only important market is the asian one for japanese singers.

The only reaction my mum ever showed about Ayu, was asking me if this is Kuu while I was watching a Ayu concert. She also said she can't tell them apart just by look. XD You can imaging how surprised I was when she asked me to watch a full Kuu concert. To any other japanese singer like Ayu she's totally indifferent. XD
I guess Kuu is just more compatible with mainstream (doing a good mix with Pop, Electro, Urban, her mature, sexy image and a deeper voice) and her outgoing character does the rest.

yeah, koda's the only artist any of my "normal" friends liked lol

All the people I know irl who were already into Japanese music though, don't like her. They tend to gravitate more towards like YUI and Ayu, sometimes hikki.

imo Koda was one of the few people in Asia who actually had music that could break barriers cause of it's similarity....but I know if she'd go outside Japan, they'd make her speak English, and then it would all just go downhill.

My niece and sister say that Kuu is much better than Ayu or Hikki as a singer. They only like some random songs from them, but when it comes to Kuu, they're both like "yey~" (My niece is a lot more in that state than my sister though). It's because of her music style. Sometimes it sounds so western 8D

Sometimes people will be like "is this Ayumi" when I'm listening to Kumi and I'm like "No - how can you not tell the difference? Kumi has a deeper, huskier voice and Ayu's is higher pitched (well up to MY STORY and such)"

I think I'd love Kuu more if she acted a bit classy like a lady and if she spoke slower and more serious. It's sad that her image prevents me from liking her more than I do now.
