There were articles published regarding their statements of not living together. Granted this is the only one I can find without digging deep. Were those statements credible? Maybe, maybe not. But that was published on the same day as their announcement and they seemed to live by those standards before the tsunami hit.

I'm sure she isn't proud of her choice, despite realizing its probably for the better, but don't use a huge tragedy as a scapegoat.

I definitely agree that with you on that.
They were planning to buy a house together in LA (this was in January/February 2011 before she went back to Japan for concert preparation) and even made friends with two real estate agents in the process... however, the earthquake happened and I guess those plans went down the toilet.

If the earthquake had not happened, I wonder if things would have turned out differently.

TOKYO —

Pop diva Ayumi Hamasaki, 33, has announced through her official fan club that she is to divorce Austrian actor Manuel Schwarz, 31. The couple who were wed in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day of 2011, are to file for a divorce after a year of marriage.

Hamasaki told fans that she had initiated the split, explaining that she felt unable to keep the promise she made to Schwarz, who lives in Los Angeles, that the pair would live together in America. “Since the Tohoku disaster, I have had the feeling that I don’t want to be apart from Japan,” she wrote. “As a result I have been spending more and more days away from him.”

“We spoke about this and we thought we could maintain our relationship by traveling to see each other, but at some point, physical distance becomes emotional distance,” she explained. “When I thought about our future, I realized I couldn’t see myself returning to the state of mind I was in when I agreed to live in America.”

It is reported that Hamasaki will file for divorce through a lawyer in the United States.

It may have been easier for him to give up his career and move to Japan, but they obviously decided for Ayu to move to the USA instead. Unfortunately, that didn't happen because of the earthquake.
I hope people don't pounce on me but...they got married; it shouldn't really have even been a question of who was going to move or not. He could have had a much more successful career in Japan ; he wouldn't have had to give his career up at all. imo, if she was actually willing to move to America, then he should have been willing to move to Japan if they were actually taking the marriage seriously.

When they got married, I was very supportive and hoped for the best but alas. Often times part of marriage and serious relationships is sacrifice and it just doesn't look like they were prepared to make that sacrifice.

At least I think this explains for me now why I thought this years CDL was so lackluster.

Do you think someone from Japan flies over to the US and rips up the marriage license? Or deletes the marriage file from some super computer that houses every marriage made by every allied country? And then the officials in the US are just like, "huh, that marriage license suddenly vanished. I guess Japan annulled it. Or maybe it was Italy? I dunno, some other country did something. When's lunch?"
I'm so sorry I missed this part of the thread because it was hilarious. Glad SheFliesHigher and Emiko handled it though, because my head might have exploded.

It's wrong but, I don't think it will be treated as badly because Mannie is a foreigner. Also, Ayu isn't exactly all that high profile anymore, so I expect it to blow over for the most part.

I don't think he'll. As we already said he never took advantage of her money after wedding. So I don't think he'll request money from her. Moreover there is no reason for him to have money: no children for example.

Huh? Why in the world would it matter if the guy she married wasn't Japanese?

Thinking about it some more....I think the Tohoku earthquake maybe played into it but cannot be the main reason. Back before she married I remember thinking that Ayu was probably really serious about marriage & commitment. As mentioned she was in a relationship for 7 years and didn't marry that person. It came as a shock to me that she married after such a short time - barely knowing that person. But now giving up after just one year - I wonder if Ayu really was serious about this marriage. As others mentioned a relationship like this - you have to work for it. Giving up after one year - she shouldn't have married him at all. I know I have no right to judge and I don't know the circumstances, but I can't help to feel a little disappointed - similar to what I felt when she married out of nowhere. I just think marriage is something that you shouldn't give up after a year of barely seeing one another. But who knows what really happened. I just wanted Ayu to be happy, was afraid she would get hurt and was right in the end. And I really don't get any satisfaction from that. I wanted Happily Ever After for Ayu.

Omg thought I saw wrongly from misa's post!
Guess maintaining a relationship in two countries is extremely hard.
Especially when both are public figures..

Edit: my local news is so efficient

Quite sad news, but she knows what she's doing, she's a grown woman, not girl.

According to Tokyo Hive, Hamasaki has announced her intention to divorce her husband through her official fan club site after the couple had tied the knot for a year in January 2011.

Hamasaki revealed the reason for her divorce due to a change of heart living outside Japan after the Tohoku Earthquake.

In her own words she explained:

"At the time of our marriage, we decided to live in America, however, because of the Tohoku Earthquake that occurred two months later, a strong feeling sprouted within me that I didn't want to be apart from Japan. I wasn't able to imagine a life in America, and as a result, I left my husband by himself for a long period of time."

This had apparently created not only a physical rift between Hamasaki and Schwarz, but also on the mental level due to their disagreement to not stay in Japan.

Hamasaki is expected to file her divorce in Los Angeles sometime within this month.

The Japanese top-charting songstress first met with Schwarz in August 2010 where the Austrian actor was playing the role of Hamasaki's husband in her "Virgin Road" promotional video.

They married in a small chapel at Las Vegas on 1 January 2011.
