Pretty sure the release date contributed though, 2nd day sales improving by 3.7k show that. Not that the release date is the most important reason for sales but it really didn't help.

I find it bizarre that this thing with Maro is even considered a scandal. Hate to think what Japan would think of the typical tabloid headlines in the UK

Pretty sure cost in general is a reason too. A lot of fans might not be able to afford a mini-album every month, especially with it coming up to Christmas.

my thoughts exactly. I wouldn't have ever expected what we got now from Ayu, honestly, I thought she wouldn't still be sold as much as back then, but I wasn't really expecting her to have 2 yrs with relatinship scandals surrounding her asd well

I can not have said this better myself. At this point of her career, I think she has two choices. Either pull a Namie and go completely mainstream, or rise to the ranks of Matsutoya Yumi and seriously focus on the music. As of now, it seems like she's making a half-assed attempt to do both, which combined with her negative image now, isn't working. I think that FIVE was a success because she was entirely focused on the music.

I blame its cover and PVs featuring Maro, it's PQ all over again. Most of Japanese and Chinese fans are hating him. I had some negative feelings towards ayu, too. But then I realized that her music is still the same good and that's reason enough to support her.

I don't know where you are from or whether you're familiar with Asian cultures, but here in China and I learned that it's similar in Japan, people generally don't have a good opinion about divorced people, and they tend to frown upon relationships where the female is older than the male. Asian fans don't hate Mannie (maybe some of them can't get over the fact that ayu didn't choose a Japanese but that's not hate) but they hate Maro because he is a) divorced and probably had a child and b) he is six years younger than ayu. Many fans automatically turned to "Maro must've been taking advantage of ayu"

Personally I don't mind she had her half ass on her album cover but Japanese may accept that from Kuu but certainly not ayu, I blame this cover on lowering ayu's sales. If you don't believe this, consider these statistics:
debut week sales:
NL: 24k
R'n'RC: 20k, dropped by 16%
Ls: 18k, dropped by 10%
FIVE: 12.7k, dropped by 29%
PQ: 9.7k, dropped by 25%

Now keep in mind that FIVE is an EP, so PQ dropped almost half from Ls debut week sales, and that's huge

And speaking of shallow, who isn't really? Even ayu is shallow enough to think that western people and everything about them is better than her own race, why do you think she used much more Caucasian actors in her PVs than Japanese? And why do you think that she loves the US so much that she almost moved there?

It still sold a lot less than LOVE. I mean, that is a huge drop compared to LOVE's first week sales. Especially for a mini that should be considered a better value for your money!

there is a reason why cd's are so heavily front loaded... its because the majority of people buy them on the first day...

it could be the fact that people were not confused, but simply didnt want to make two trips?

You can make all the excuses you want for everything else, but the reason the japanese fans point to is "MARO" plain and simple. Many I'm sure noticed the setup where Ayu+Maro is the promotion that so many here say is so lacking.
