Because Namie is the "it" thing and has a "cool" image. Namie singing in English supports that image. But if Ayu would sing in English her fans would feel as if she would betray their Japanese culture.

I mean, one reason I listen to J-Pop is because I love the sound of Japanese. I would be a little sad if Ayu would make an entire English album, but it's not like it would be the end of the world.

That's a misconception though. Namie's father was European but Namie's mother (I think it was her talking) said she didn't know or remember.

It used to be written in all profiles and magazines back in the 1990’s, but Emiko Taira herself (Namie’s mother) stated that she never known which origin was her father. She only knew he was European, she said “maybe English or Italian”. I think Namie’s company thought that Italian was fashionable and exotic at the time and decided to go for it. The truth is that Namie only know she’s not 100% Okinawaian. Her father may also have been an American of European decent, that’s what a few Japanese website write.

Progress is a mini master piece in my opinion. That was another song that helped me get back into Ayu. Watched the Kouhaku performance and when her dress turned into her dances I was like...
