They're damn popular for a while already.
AAA was the most requested act for a-nation this year on social media by far.
They're also doing well solo, especially Nissy (finished a sold-out Dome tour in April).
Exception is Urata Naoya, but he's suspended now anyway and luckily it didn't hurt the band.

I’m so sad ayu won’t be participating, last years a nation was one of the best. Oh well maybe next year.

Well, festival concerts for any artist tend to be VERY safe because as they take place at a festival (duh), the audience tends to have way more people who aren't part of the fandom and aren't as familiar with the act's catalogue as the audience on a tour, for example, would be. So, the overall mix of whatever Ayu is promoting at the time + well known summer hits make total sense on A-Nation's enviroment.

It feels like a little strange not having Ayu at a-nation but it doesn't bother me too much. She has some really great a-nation performances though.
I think 2002 a-nation was the best, that one was the most memorable for me. The rest I don't really remember.

I thought the same way until I went to a-nation last year and, as Ayu was the closing act, everybody that stayed there was Ayu fans. It really felt like it was one of her arena tour but, of course, the atmosphere of a-nation is completely different from her regular concerts. Watching on video may seem predictable but being there you want to see the "classic a-nation acts" like the car ride and all of that.
