Considering the factual data up to 2004 and their releases, tours and tie-ins over the past few years I think it obviously will be between Utada and Ayumi.
Up to 2004 Utada was proven to be the richest female singer in Japan. With Ayumi being at #2 and Seiko Matsuda being at #3. Now, since then Utada hasn't done all that much. She released two Japanese albums and one Best-Of. In addition to that one English album that...kinda flopped. She did make lots of money from those and the singles involved since she gets most of the credits, however Ayumi released a whole lot more and gets a fair share of royalties for it as well. They are probably at around the same level there. For commercials and tie-ins those two battle each other directly as well, Utada is paid more individually, but Ayumi has a bigger number of them. Considering concerts, which are the #1 income source in the current music business, Ayumi wins easily. She has far more and far bigger tours. Utada only did a couple concerts in these 8 years while Ayumi had 8 tours + CDLs + a-nation. I'm pretty sure since 2004 Ayumi has been a bigger earner, simply because she did more in that time, you gotta remember Utada spent 2 years trying to break into the US market again and is on a hiatus. Before that Utada earned quite a bit more. So I think Utada in the end is a bit richer, but they should be somewhere close. Ayumi seems to spend far more money as well so yeah...Utada should be richer. Taking males into account Tsunku and Tetsuya Komuro made gigantic amounts of money. They have both been around for a long time, had succesful solo careers and are producers and songwriters of some of Japan's most succesful acts.
