Spears' massive leap to No. 1 is spurred by first-week digital download sales of 286,000, the biggest opening-week tally by a female artist since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital downloads in 2003, besting Mariah Carey's take for "Touch My Body" by just over 200 units . . . In between her nearly 10-year gap between No. 1s, Spears has placed four other top 10s on the Hot 100, the last being "Gimme More," the first single from her last album, "Blackout." That song jumped 68-3 last October with first-week download sales of 179,000. "Womanizer" previews Spears' sixth studio set "Circus," due Dec. 2. "

Because Britney wasn't such a spectacle then and was considered normal. The only reason she's having such success at this point is because of how far she fell in her life and career and everybody is interested to see what she does next, good or bad. It's all entertainment.

Because she's "when again"? Since when is "when" an adjective?

And no, the song is actually great, and that's why it's so successful. If Britney just recorded herself farting it wouldn't be this successful.

That certainly has something to do with it. So many have been rooting for Britney and to see that she's finally getting her "oomf" back, at least as far as Music Videos go, endear people to her. They've been feeling bad for her, she's now seems to be doing better so they're supporting her all the more to encourage her. In some aspects, it more about the artist and not about the song.

Do I think some people are interesting in this just for that reason? Yes. Makes complete and total sense. Everybody is interested in the state of Britney Spears.
