Today's the anniversary of when her grandmother died (the anniversary of when she recorded FRIEND and poker face)... I wish I could remember the source of that info so I could link you guys, but I do remember coming across that information.

Given that information, I wonder if Last minute is about her grandmother then. It would make sense for Ayu to be angry that her grandmother died before she could get back to Fukuoka after recording.

Of course it could be anger about those who have passed away in general. She's lost a few people who were really important to her over the years.

I know people here think I just plain don't like Ayu anymore, but god, after 15 years, and all the changes I've seen, I have a hard time believing that'll EVER be the case. Ayu said in I think the SCawaii interview regarding "Pray" that just because your path diverges from someone else's, it doesn't mean "farewell" because there's still SOMETHING there. You know, you've left an impression on one another, and nothing that happens in the future can change that aspect of the past between you.

It's true that I may not love Ayu's concerts, and the mixing of her albums may make it hard for me to enjoy them, and I don't agree with her approach on a good deal of things anymore. Absolutely. Being an Ayu fan does REALLY frustrate me at times because I feel like being unapologetically herself was a big part of why I loved her so much, and I don't think she's as honest with herself anymore as she used to be. BUT. Even despite all that, her lyrics are still amazing, even now, and they always have been. And yeah she's had some lyrical rough patches where she was rehashing things a lot and using similar phrases, but even within those, you still find treasure.

The amazing thing about words is that they don't NEED good mixing or cool visuals to still be good. And her past lyrics, every time I read them I notice something else, a different interpretation or a structure I didn't notice before. Or my own life will have changed and I'll suddenly relate to a song I barely noticed before. So no matter what else happens, I'll probably be a fan of her lyrics forever.

Ayu's soul is firmly rooted in her lyrics. I think if she were to ever cease writing her own lyrics, then that would be the real "beginning of the end." I agree that her lyrics are always top-notch, but even so, I wish she would focus her energy on where her true talent lies: Being a singer-songwriter FIRST AND FOREMOST and generally just being the master of pathos that she is.

The amazing thing that I noticed with Ayu, is that she knows exactly how to interpret a melody and how to convey the appropriate feeling in conjunction with that melody. This is likely not a result of technical skill, but it is something purely intuitive. Thus, I would put her in the same class as The Beatles and Michael Jackson in terms of songwriting skill (lack of technical music knowledge, but extraordinarily gifted in capturing the spirit of a song intuitively). And the way she can make one feel conflicting, highly nuanced emotions within the same song is nearly unparalleled.

btw D-Z, I can't believe you happened to choose 'Letter' for March 21. That's my birthday (also PQ's release date now that I remember), and coincidentally an Ayu song I find uncannily relatable. Love the lyrics to bits. I even have the really LQ live rip on my iPod.

I agree with you ENTIRELY. I do wish she realized how in tune with melody she often is... I get the feeling that she chooses melodies and THEN determines what feeling to express in her lyrics, rather than starting with a feeling and some rough lyrics & then working her way out from that. She's picking melodies lately based more on their appeal, when she's SO SO SO very good at writing or choosing melodies based on how they FEEL.

Letter is one of my favorite tracks on PQ, that was one of the reasons I chose it for the album's release day rather than the title track (especially since PQ had other days that applied, like when the Peach John CM debuted and when the tour started, you know?). All the songs' dates have meaning (well, not all, but MANY) either to ayu personally or based on a release or CM or tie-in.

She really should, but I think she may end up doing a decision-esque video for it which isn't bad but it deserves something like No way to say IMO.

Judging from the message I think it would be a really inspired video. She wrote something as "Because I love Last Minute too much, every single night I'm thinking if doing a PV or not. What do you think about this?" so is like she has already some strong idea in her mind and this is good!

That's true but at the same time Zutto... MV was really well made (at least for me) even the slow part was quite artistic and the frozen part was just amazing so this time I want to believe that she understand that her fans want her to makes MV like before with aesthetics and in a professional way ! no more MV made by her dancers ... We will see, overall Masashi Muto is a good producer !
