Sorry i keep referring to my friend in japan since she's my only source for japanese behaviour.

It seems that the japanese like to watch the PVs and promotional live performances to see if they like the song. If they do, they will buy the single and/or download it for 200yen. Maybe the teens and below r more prone to this kind of compulsive buying whereas the older people will weigh their options more carefully, which in ayu's case, waiting for the album which will probably contain the songs in the single.
