Yes, it really is. At the beginning of this year, it seemed like sales were going to regain themselves a bit, because they went up some..............and then a few months ago they plummeted~ horribly. And the fact that Ayu is #2 with a little less than 3k, I think that's proof enough. This is a terrible time for anybody to release an album.

What seemed different? The situation still looks quite the same as it did the last year, just without all the best ofs, EXILE, GReeeN and Mr.Children. You're forgetting that not everyone can outsell even Ayu's 3rd week - the thing is there are no major releases atm.

No, but the point is that she's number 2 with less than 3k. On the SECOND day of the week. While it's true that that's because of weak releases, the fact that there are such weak weeks is just sad >.<.

Back in 2000 ayu's first week sales of Rock 'n Roll Circus might not even have been enough to guarantee a top 3 position. I know you can't stop it, but I'm still sad about it XD. They should add digital album sales to the mix ...

It's 2010 and as you are aware it's pointless to compare the sales from 10 years ago to the ones we now have. There is no need to be sad about anything, times they are changing~

I wonder if when the economy stabilizes again will Ayu's sales go up? Not dramatically but instead of there being a 30k difference in the negative it will be in the positive?

I think it's just because nothing of note was released this week, haha. It's just a sloooow week for sales.

Sales in general have taken a huge dip. The #1 album of the year right now has only sold about 560-570k. I wonder what will hit the million this year~

Well, it's also Ayu's third week of sales. This is probably her highest position in the 3rd week in a while, I think.

^ I agree. Maybe a boyband will release a must-have best or something, but even that would, I think, be very unlikely to hit 800k, even.

I was just saying, the sales may have been bad before, but they were staying pretty stable, and even looking like sales in general had a chance of improving. But then they dropped to the point where everybody and everything looks pathetic, even compared to the the pitiful sales just earlier this year and the end of last year. It's not even about the fact that sales aren't what they used to be, or even that nobody very significant has released too much lately. At this point, everyone's sales are bad, even for this era of terrible physical sales, lol. And the rock bottom all came on so suddenly, now.

I dunno about that; Supermarket Fantasy sold 1.2 million so naturally two years later a new album won't surpass the previous one, as natural and common these days even if they haven't lost popularity. There's no way the best selling album will be a million or more and the 3rd or 4th 500K. Exile's Aisubeki mirai e sold more or less the same amount in a fraction of the time, so if anyone, Exile might make it to a million.

I wouldn't take Mr. Children so lightly, haha.

They've basically sold a similar amount give or take 100k or so with their last 5 albums in the last 8 years:
It's a Wonderful World (2002) - 1,232,655
Shifuku no Oto (2004) - 1,411,799 -> outsold the previous album
I Love U (2005) - 1,141,471
Home (2007) - 1,207,417 -> outsold the previous album
Supermarket Fantasy (2008) - 1,260,377 -> outsold the previous album and sold more than 3 out of 4 of the albums listed

Their popularity is just... wow. One of the most stable groups I've seen when it comes to single/album sales. Their DVD sales are also quite stunning and consistent.

ARASHI, they are a MONSTER in Japan, i don't know why

And the peak is awesome in a 3rd week, but the sales are a little low

wow at mr children sales they are really consistent..no wonder they are 2nd behind B'z in overall sales
but i dont know why i couldnt get into their music

If Hikki releases anything this year, or something that has a good tie in, I could see it hitting at least 700,000. Didn't "Flavor of Life" sell over 650,000 copies IIRC? I know the Heart Station post-album singles dwarfed that, but still.

That had a tie in with Hana Yori Dango, one of the biggest dramas of that time period, haha.

Her singles don't do that well nowadays. (HEART STATION's sales had a lot of help from Last Friends and Prisoner of Love, I think.)
