Originally:

8cm CD = Single
12cm CD = MAXI SINGLE

But nowadays, most of the singles are released on 12cm discs, so, most are MAXI SINGLES, by the original concept. MAXI SINGLE is when the disc uses more than 4 tracks \ 25min of music.

Really? I thought a Maxi was a single with more than 2 principal songs...

In the UK (not that this makes a difference)... there are 2 types, the 2-track and the maxi.

2-tracks only have .. well, 2 tracks. An A-side, then a B-side or a remix. I think the total time has to be under 10mins, otherwise its not allowed to count towards the chart.
Maxi singles are everything else, so there are at least 3 tracks. Can have B-sides, or remixes, or a video (though there are rules about what is allowed).

So in the UK its never anything to do with the physical size of the single, its just a maxi-single if it's not a 2-track :p

I've been able to look up the US and UK definitions of a MAXI single, but there is no source where I can find what the Japanese marked define as one.

I think that a Maxi single is a single with more than 2 main tracks [non remix] and instrumentals

^There's more rules than that, that applies to the definition, I'm quite sure.

Why are singles so underappreciated in the world anyway? XD They're so lame and tiny in America and stuff.. :/

Maybe it's cause Japan is really ahead of the times xD :3 [And the whole, oh yeah I'll release an album then release singles from it, is sort of dumb >>]

I know.. But remember back in the end of the 90s? Then the singles were full of remixes and stuff even here. My old singles are full of stuff, but the newer ones aren't really interesting at all.

Westerners release singles from an album they already released just to "promote" the album. They don't really care about single sales. But I prefer the way that singles come out first, then an album comes out.

^Agreed.

Actually, until I got into Japanese music, I had no idea singles existed. I had a Britney Spears "Sometimes" single, and I never really got why they only put only one song on a CD.

Aren't singles released for radioplay purposes? I mean, yes to promote the album, but they basically can't play songs which aren't released a singles, which is why they have singles released after the album.

exactly one month to go!

I think i would prefer to have singles released before albums, it probably does creates better revenue for the artists as well, I don't think many people in the US here buy singles.
