The chicken or the egg: which came first??????? the debate is endless........................................... ............................
I think that the song should sound catchy first! I never contemplate on the lyrics, however, the lyrics should fit itself to the song (i.e. heart-breaking lyrics to fast tempo bad combo eh?) Toxic for example sounds good and it has utterly no meaning!!!

and about the lyrics coming first, i bet they do. she probably just has a tune in her head, or not. and from there writes lyrics and goes on and on. i doubt she'd sit there and compose a whole tune with verses, choruses, etc. and then go back and see which lyrics fit to it. oh, and yes. songs should sound good first and foremost. her lyrics just add to the greatness. pretty sure that's a reason she's so big, not so disadvantaged. |

I don't think she will run out of ideas.....If I could write as well as Ayu can I would never run out of ideas talking about the experiences I faced because well 22 years of living makes you go through a lot of different tthings happening to you O_o; every day we learn something new or experience something new...even on routines something different happens now and then.
I understand the fact that she could have put mediocre lyrics and her songs would still sound the same, however I have to admit my admiration for Ayu grew a lot when I got to know that she wrote her own lyrics ad with so much in-depth....maybe that's the reason I'm at an Ayu forum now, not at a DAI one or a hikki forum.

It is impossible to run out of ideas based on your experiences. Why? Because EVERYTHING you say or write is based on your experiences.
You cannot speak about something you have had no experience with. Your brain must have been exposed to a concept in some way, direct or indirect. Could you sing about a flibbityflub? No, because your brain doesn't recognize what that is. Even if you are singing about the life of Gandhi that you read about in a book, you are still singing about your experience with someone else's experience. You personally did not experience what Gandhi did, but you have experienced LEARNING ABOUT it. Therefore, Ayu cannot possibly run out of things to say about her experiences. I mean, look at the idea of love. That has been explored COUNTLESS times, but have people run out of things to say about it? Hells no. In fact the gross majority of soings, literature, etc are about love. Don't worry...nobody's running out of things to say.

lol..calm down gohan nobodies saying your bashing her
![]() the one thing that questions me about you is how sometimes, u are yang ho about defending her and how honest, moral, incredible, etc. she is, and otehr times you say that it's a disadvantage and she's disrespectful. o_O make up your mind buddy. oh, and i'm highly doubtful that her sales dropped during the RAINBOW era because of repeted lyrics. lol. really dude..i could almost bet on that. oh, and yes gsts, their "your" opinions, but uhh..this opinon of yours is really confusing O_O can anyone break it down to jerm-language? |

Yep SheFliesHigher made a pretty good explanation about it being hard to run out of ideas to talk about
And yep most songs lyrics, lyterature and stuff usually have LOVE as a main theme and there is so much diverse material, some are simpler and others very complex.

I disagree. I do not think it is anyone's disadvantage to sing about personal experiences. Most of the songs you hear are about love, personal experiences, and other things.
Also about western music... I agree with hiro. Even with songs that are about unanswered love letters, sex, and other things, those type of things are reality for some people. About Greatful days: I adore this song, really. The PV is just of Ayu having fun, and I enjoyed that. The lyrics were very much realistic and beautiful, like Impact said. When I listen to music, it's usually the arrangement I hear first. That's why I envy many artists, because they have great composing skills. The person's voice may not be the best, or like anyone else's (say, people with "different" voices - like Aikawa Nanase and Shiina Ringo, two artists that I adore). Usually I don't read the lyrics - but I listen to the way the lyrics are sung. From that I can appreciate the written lyrics more. So, I think it is in no way Ayu's disadvantage that she sings about personal experiences. Music in my opinion is not just what you hear - what about all the things that cause the music to be as enjoyful as it is? Without many things music would not be what it is. And also - as PickleCookies said, people enjoy songs they can relate to. That's why I became interested in Ayu in the first place.

ok, this subject is SO controversial! lol different ppl like different music! that's one excuse for all this... but personally, i think that here in America, the "popular" music (i.e. Britney, Christina, Beyonce, etc. w/e lol) is mostly about meaningless sexual experiences or nonsense or both lol there are a few good artists... and there are alot of bad ones but that doesn't mean there's nothing to listen to over here... but, i agree with those of you saying Ayu's lyrics have more meaning... hardly anyone sings about the stuff she sings about... that's part of what makes her unique and that is part of why she's my fav. artist... and jpop/jrock lyrics are part of the reason i listen to it more than the music here in America... but everyone has their own opinion and we shouldn't stomp on eachother's....

Even if she writes shallow lyrics she's still going to have songs some people wouldn't like...so isn't it better to have at least good lyrics bad song now, then shallow lyrics bad song...?

I'm yet to understand the arguement... Ayu uses some of her personal experiences as ideas for her songs... but SheFliesHigher is right, indirectly or directly, we can really only write about our own experiences, or interpretations of them, whether they be dreams or drawn from direct experience... Could we maybe have an example of another song that has lyrics written by someone without this disadvantage so we could compare and contrast? I don't think I completely understand...

Actually ayu should be considered as the green diamond of the music industry, rarely to be found...
How many singers nowadays can write a whole lot of 70 over lyrics themselves for their own albums... You see, ayu write the lyrics of all the songs in her album, no lyrics of new songs of hers (not including Graduation Photo, that is a song that she re-sang) is written by other people... And it is rare that a singer does this, not even Utada Hikaru, BoA and Namie Amuro... And add on to this, ayu also have a special touch for fashion, which non of the recent superstars can achieve that standard... I think that she is the combination of a lot of mega stars in the world... |
