Exactly. Dark and depressing lyrics existed long before "emo."

That's true. Lots of poetry is that way and that's what I see Ayu's lyrics as. She knows how to write words that make you feel down, but when you hear it it gives you a feeling of hope. You know? I've never listened to emo music so I can't really comment, but I don't see any similarities.

Why do "emo" people display such images of death? If they're so obsessed with it, why don't they just die already? I'm getting sick of hearing and seeing them, anyway.
I'm serious... Okay, fine, they can die peacefully. But still.

If that's the case, then I'd rather listen to something "emo" than anything else. |

Ignorant ask. Ayu just express herself. It's just it.

Ayu's lyrics can be many things: sad, introspective, scary, maybe even depressing (depending on how you react to songs, everyone has their own little way), but emo isn't one of them.
Sad does not always equal emo. Deal with it.

emo??? i still dont' believe there is even a true definition for the word. It's a genre of music...but still that's not that specific. It used to mean emotional(referring to dark??? i guess...) but still...emo is stupid. I use the word playfully or when i dont' feel comfortable talking with large words and instead use vague words like emo. Ayu is Ayu. Emo is just...an overused cliche imo. emo is overused now days....and people still look at it in a silly way a lot, like "cutting oh!!! lol i'm emo" and stuff like that.

Winter Whispers For all the words unspoken I keep to myself because I’m selfish I don’t speak to you because I think you’re selfish Can’t there be an easier way? My mind trespasses a vacant heart But it soon learns of the orphan of secrets Held inside Why can’t I just foster my emotions Like you had Like all of you had? In the stormy season We often admire the rain Why is it so admirable? What’s so blissful about crying skies? Nothing’s blissful about running mascaras And gasping orbs of emotion Smeared liner of depression Drenched cheeks with forged smiles The colder it is The warmer we truly feel, right? So can’t you just accept the secrets And put away the selfish mindset Because I can’t do the same thing. -Yume (ME!! i wrote it!! lalala...) |

Surely what people would class as modern day 'emo' is more of a psychological disorder than a music genre. So no, I wouldn't say Ayu is emo. It's become such a fad nowadays anyway, that what people see as modern emo's came way after Ayu.

I don't really get that "emo" thing. Would someone care to explain? Please!? I would connect "emo" more with death, suicide and cutting...
In my opnion ayu has a natural and real outlook on things. Her happy songs aren't 100% happy, but always bear some sadness in it. (Just like someone who's happy fears that the happiness may end sometime soon or remembers the difficult times before the joy.) And her sad songs always bear some hope. (Except maybe "POWDER SNOW" and "Memorial address".) She usually doesn't give up to negativity in her songs. But rather takes it as a motive to keep going. I don't think that can be called "emo"...

Ayumi is not emo.
She expresses true and valid feelings and ideas about love and life though deeply meaningful and often saddening lyrics. That does not equal emo. Not even close. |
