The one who knows I listen to her thinks she's a rapstar.

Everyone else thinks I listen to only Beethoven, because I refuse to reveal anything.

Yeah! (:
They aren't homophobic but it's sad to see people labeling a certain music style gay. Pretty close minded. But oh well... if Ayu's music is gay, Madonna's music is gay, then I'm definitely a little bit gay myself, because I love them! xD

Well one of my friends is beginning to like her music, but my other friends wish I'd stop talking about her; but they've never even tried her music before...

Actually, in my class, 8 people are fans of J-pop, 5 of them are into Ayumi's music (none of them are Asian) We have posters on the walls in the classroom (Fairyland and secret) and plays her music in the lunch breaks. I guess I'm really lucky to be part of a class like this ^^

This is the cover for my school yearbook (Includes social pictures, class photographs ect..) from 2004-2005 and 2006-2007 (published to over 600 persons) Can you see who's on the cover? It was a voting contest, and those entry's from one of my classmates did win both years. He's amazing in drawing. (His gallery...)

(The name of my school is "Tranby", and "skole" means "School" translated from Norwegian. So it will be "Tranby School".

I've never had such problems. I'm Chinese anyway. So I guess people would think it's normal that I listen to Asian music. And my friends are all Asians also. Anyway. Those "popular girls"... Urgh. Why do they want to listen to your music anyway? You should have said: "Hell no." HAHA.

my friends don't really care honestly =\ when first day of school starts and we do the whole get to know each other the teachers always ask me what music do I like and I just say j-pop or asian music in general. again like what was mentioned earlier - they really just gave me the 'oh you're asian so I guess it's fine' look.

i wouldn't even bother telling the girls in my class that i listen to jpop. i know what their reactions would be..

so it's basically just a secret for me. the only people who know that i listen to jpop is my brother (he cannot stand it), my mother, father (dosen't care, but in mcdonalds he just blurts out to me "so you listen to japanese music?" in front of everyone), and that's it. i don't want anyone knowing, because they wouldn't understand.

My bestfriend thinks she's pretty,
but they always like "New album again? New song again? bla bla bla, and they said like in America they release a new album like every 2 or 3 years."
and I was like shut up! it's different you know Japan and America, don't compare them,
and they always make fun of Ayu's vibra voice.. and sometimes it sucks when my best friends make fun of Ayu..

The only thing my friends/classmates say about her is that she's pretty, I tried to give them a listen of Ayu's music, but they were like, "Meh, quit trying to convert me." xD

It's easier over here, of course. I'm Asian, and about 3/4s of the school population is some kind of Asian, so it's pretty natural.

They get tired of the Ayumi thing, or they just get tired of JPOP in general (considering most of the Asians only listen to drama songs, anyway) cause I "provoke" it by saying, "American music has no meaning". Then they say, "well, at least our artists don't look like s#@ts and w&^res!", then I roll my eyes. Cause I know that even though artists like Goto Maki, Koda Kumi, and even Ayumi are getting into the "Sexy" scene, Japan in whole is WAY behind our homeland of America.

Another problem I have is showing the dramas I want them to watch, because it either has a great message or underlying message. So I tried showing "1 Litre of Tears", and they all didn't want to watch it because "it's not funny". Then I tried "LIAR GAME", but they all didn't like it because of Toda Erika (who played Nakajima Umi on HYD2). So basically, everywhere you go, there's going to be shallow people, and people who don't realize how actors/actresses are usually put in polar opposite roles, unlike in America (most of the time, I usually see the same people as villians and heroes, with an occasional switch to see them mostly crash and burn).

What else is odd is that they don't like the fast pace of Japanese music. So I ask, "don't you get tired of the same thing?", and they reply, "no, cause quality music can last you until another song comes out!". Plus, I look through my friends' iPods sometimes when I'm bored, and I end up seeing about 300+ different artists, each with either one song or one album under their name (unless they're old, then be two or three albums). Then sometimes they look through mine, and see that I only have around 50 different artists, with most of them having at least one album (oldies may be only have one song). Then I show them my Ayumi, Morning Musume, and any other artist I have over twenty songs, cause I know that their artists (almost always) never have more than twenty songs in two years. Only after that do they realize what I'm talking about.

With Ayumi specifically (JPOP generally), even over here is pretty hard to accept unless you find someone that listens to Japanese music themselves, which is about a 1 in 50 chance; better than the mainland, yet still pretty bad considering our culture.

The frustrations commonly known is basically the language barrier, and just the overall sound of the music. I guess real instruments and totally different song structure throw them off, and they immediately dub it "electronic crap".

Well I live in Tennesse and our population is roughly 95% Caucasian 3% Black and the rest are a mix of Asian and Latino, etc. There isn't much culture here and I listen to all types of music like soca, dance hall, Asian music and dance, etc. The only music popular around here is rap, rock and country and that is also according to your race. I have a friend who is Black and she listens to metal and people would make fun of her (White and Black). Anyways, what I'm trying to say is, my friends don't know I listen to Ayumi. They don't even know I listen to rock, soca, dance hall, trance, axe, merengue, reggaeton, etc. I'd be too embarrased to tell them. There are a few friends who I would probably tell but they probably wouldn't like it. People here don't like listening to music that they can't understand (except dance hall). For the most part when I listen to my iPod, I turn the music down so people can't hear it. I'm surprised that you all have the same problem too. I was under the impression I could have been the only one. I don't see why people just can't pay attention to the music. IMO, who cares about the words. They may be nice but it's just music.

Anyway, I keep my music taste a well-kept secret for the most part. About 4 people know that I listen to JPop and 2 have heard a full song. Because, for the most part, I go to a class where the guys label anything not death metal as gay, I choose not to willingly put myself [for the second time] through the mental torture has, fortunately, now stopped.

Yeah, basically, if I were to go to a more open-minded class, I think my MP3 player would be used more.

Alot of people know I listen to Ayu, as I had my mini-postere of LOVEppears on my binder.
Everyone was like "Who's that?" and I told them. But then I got in trouble cus Ayu was half naked in the pic xD

My sister can't stand Ayu. She says that Ayu's a ***** and makes fun of her vbrato ( :p) and when I tell her how crappy american music is, she says " Oh, and I suppose Ayu is'nt?" to which of course I say "Yes!"

get weird looks after I say I'm into Ayu and j-music in general, but I dont give a damn.

I LOVE AYU!

I too prefer to keep it under the hood, and only let my closest friends know about my favorite artist being ayu, and the general interest in japanese music. It's just easier, you get out of a lot of explanation.
Yes, to people who don't understand, All Asian is Japanese...
well, in language, you can defenitly tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese.
Also, only my closest friends know I listen to Ayu. And with one friend (xLuna&1LOVE) I can talk openly cuz she also like Ayu and Namie Amuro...

Not everybody can appreciate art. They just care for boobs being shaked around to 50 Cent and friends.
The jerks... if they like boobs and sexyness, maybe you should show them Koda Kumi's PVs: JUICY and SHAKE IT

Yes, You're right... I should've said no ("Yeah, I say no, no, no"). But then again, can you imagine I was kinda afraid of saying no?

Yes, also my mother and father know and -like I said before- my closest friends... My dad says he hates Ayu but I dunno if he means that (I don't think so).

Indeed

Most people think: Oh! Asian = Chinese and they all like those western artists (no offense)... but they all make the same music and they all dance the same
Spoiler:
If need to pick the best dancer (out of the whole world), I would pick a Japanese woman who I really admire, who is divorced, who a 9 year old son... her name is Namie Amuro

It appears we all have the same problem... (and all those girls from my class like High School Music and Zac Efron ... I hate both)

^Yes... and when I say: "Ewww... Zac Efron! How can you ever like him?" and my friends just reply: "Well, you like other people then we do..." (and then I think: yeah, because I have taste)

And what I can't stand if people say Japanese = Chinese
