^ Well, I am referring to Catholicism.

Well, I guess not many people in Japan know about Mary Magdalene, so I've always thought that it inspired her because it was a Bible based story that she probably wouldn't have heard before (if that makes sense LOL).

^well I won't disagree that she could have heard Mary Magdalene's story instead. It's just that I find that possibility more slim than the other way around. But who knows, Andrenekoi is right, that's one of those things only ayu knows and we'll never know the answer (just like what does she officially say in the english parts of "forgiveness" and those digitalized voclas over Beautiful fighters lol) Maybe if anyone from here ever met her, hopefully they wouldn't waste the chance to clear these questions lol

My mum used to be Church of England and her Catholic cousins had little cupboards with a Mary statue in them, they used to open it and pray every day.

We're a different religion now, I was baptised Lutheran to get into a good school (well, it wasn't that good, but better than the public one lol) and they never prayed to saints, just learned about them a bit.

I think that it all depends on what sect/arm of the religion you're in. They all have different rules on who you can/should pray to.

Back on topic: I like to think that the song title has multiple meanings, the PV meaning is clear that it's "Maria", the song title "M" could stand for a large number of English words or she's done the song to fit with her other songs; A, H, &.

In the lyrics she's talking to a "Maria" so she could be talking to a saint, or maybe just to all women in the world who she's calling "Maria".

[QUOTE=ImpactBreaker;1910109]^Well, I believe only catholics pray to saints (can't remember any other christian religion that has "saints" but maybe I'm misinformed). Brazil has the largest population of catholics in the world. nobody here prays to Mary Magdalene and it's a fact here. People massively pray for Virgin Mary here, far more than to Saint Anthony. Not sure about the other catholics in the world though.[QUOTE]

I think you're right. I live in Italy, the fatherland of catholicism and here every city, every small town or village, adores a Saint and organizes celebrations dedicated to him. For istance, one of most known italian city in the world, Venice, celebrates Saint Marc.
In the post above the translation of what I found in italian version of wikipedia.

The veneration of Mary Magdalene

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

The most ancient cult dedicated to Mary Magdalene was in the end of IV century and took place in the rituals of the Oriental Church the second Sunday after Easter.
In that day they celebrated all the women that, the day after the crucifixion, went to the sepulchre with the oils for embalm the body of Christ. Among these women an important role was given to Mary Magdalene the only one existent in all the four canonics scriptures.
The first place of veneration of M. M. was in Epheso (Greece) where it is told to be also her grave; then her burial has been transferred to Costantinople during Leone the Philosoph era (886 a.C) and after this transfer her cult began to diffuse among the Occidental Church fideles in the XI century.
The cult of the Magdalene was broadcasted in the whole Europe and her fideles built many churches in her honor: the most famous is the gothic one of Saint-Maximin la Sainte Baume (1295) where is cherished the skull of the Saint; but the very first church where the European cult grew up was the Vezelay abbey where already in 1050 was told to be conserved the holy body.
Recently afterwards the success of the book “The Saint Graal” og baigent-leight-Lincoln became famous the Church of rennes-le-Chateau.

In France it narrates that the Three Mary, escaped from the first persecutions, arrived in the bogs of Camargue (a France’s region), where a village still brings their names: Saintes Maries de la mer (the three Marys of the sea). Anyway the cult of the Magdalene is not a prerogative of France, but in Italy exist many buildings dedicated to her: for example the church of the Maddalena Island (in sardinia, I add that’s the most gorgeous natural place in the world!!), the Chrches of Longare, Bordighera and the Desenzano’s Dome (in the Garda’s lake banks).

As a catholic Saint, her relics are celebrated in the church of Saint Maximin la Sainte Baume in Provence, one of the most famous gothic churches of south France: this celebration attracts a huge crowd of pilgrims.Even though her bones were lost during the French Revolution is narrated that her skull rest in her sepulchre in a cavern of La Sainte Baume near Marseille.
The catholic Church celebrates her the 22nd July.

Sorry for my rude translation but I did it while working.

In the end, anyway, I feel to say that I really don’t know any Pray or chant dedicated to her: this is really common for catholic saints. You pray them with general Pray or invoching their names in your pray.
In the PV ayu wears a white pure wedding dress: even the Magdalene is a saint she couldn’t be figured out with such a candid dress symbol of Virgin Mary pureness.

If you've ever seen ayu's history on music station (2001 broadcast). The caption for the M performance reads In other words, The Holy Mother.

^nice find =D

but yes, i'm 99.9% sure she's praying to Mary, the mother of Jesus.
and i have to say, here in croatia we pray a lot to virgin Mary, but it's very rare to even hear someone prays to Mary Magdalene.... i remember learning a M.M prayer some time in middle school, but forgot about it xD

maybe she'd call the song M.M and not just M if she prayed to Mary Magdalene?

I know. In Japan, in which the christianity rate is kinda low, MARIA is a short name they often use to refer to Virgin Mary. Several times have I see references in Japanese stuff (non-ayu related) about Virgin Mary and Jesus. Practically never about Mary Magdalene.

The Orthodox Church prays to saints as well.

I agree, it's the Virgin Mary that Ayu refers too. ^_^
