woo great idea I like it ^^ so 1 week 1 album... right?? someone will controle it and say when to change? hehe it can be fun... sometimes people tend to only say "i don't like this album" and no more in the news thread.. this is a good way to know a lot of different thoughts about an album, and also rediscover some songs... I've had nice findings listening again to the old albums (POWDER SNOW, for my dear, End Roll... ok... it may be because of her tours XDD)
I'll post my comments alter, gonna lsiten to asfxx ^^

Listening to ASFXX and watching the pvs from it...it is like seeing a shadow of the Ayumi we know now. It's strange to see the 'plain' pvs and less-varied music, I assume she didn't have any control over her career at that point outside of the lyrics. IMO, the lyrics are the real gem of this album. I wish I had a book (bilingual with English ) of her lyrics like I do of Sting's.

Count me in! Anyway, here's my comments on ASFXX, track by track as I listen! I may make another post later after a few listens to see if my opinion changes. Fun to do this album, I rarely listen to it. I'm also going to make sure I read the lyrics too, because I'm not familiar with them for all the albums.
1. Prologue - A nice introduction, it's neither amazing nor bad. 2. A Song for ×× - I love this song, it feels strange listening to it on the album though, I'm used to the A BEST version. Her vocals here sound so emotive, however, so do the other versions and they're much stronger vocally. It doesn't detract from the song though, it's a masterpiece. 3. Hana - the beginning of this song sounds so dated now! The songs lyrics are so typically Ayu also. This one is really catchy, but her vocals sound so strained. 4. FRIEND - her vocals sound so cute at the beginning of this song. ♥ I really love the lyrics to this song, how come I've never noticed them before? This song is so adorable, it makes me feel really... warm. I really like this!! 5. FRIEND II - Wow, in comparison to FRIEND she sounds so strained. I don't like this one as much, it's catchy, but I don't get the same emotional reaction that I had to the first FRIEND. 6. poker face - This song is so good, and it's so adorable too. I find this song has a really memorable melody, I find myself humming it when I least expect it. 7. Wishing - A really forgettable sadly, it's nice, but nothing special. I'm about 3/4 of the way now, and I'm bored. 8. YOU - this is another really cute song, and the video is really pretty too, Ayu looks so young and content. I like this one, and I like all the newer versions also. This version has a certain charm though. 9. As if... - really really catchy, I wouldn't choose it over some of the newer songs, but when I listen to it I sing along~ 10. POWDER SNOW - I love this song, it's extremely powerful. The only downfall is the vocals, but it's still such an emotive song that they become irrelevant. I listen to the PCDL audio more though... 11. Trust - This song is so nice to listen to, by now I'm getting a little bored with how similar all the songs sound, but it's nice and catchy so it's okay. 12. Depend on you - A really nice change! I love this song in any form, the A BEST version, the 10th Anniversary version - all of them! It works really well here, a change in sound was needed, badly! 13. SIGNAL - again, catchy! I like this song usually, but it's little lacklustre after Depend on you. It's one of those songs that's fun, but only for the first minute or so. 14. from your letter - I don't think I've ever listened to this this song ;^^ It's actually really nice and relaxing, nice after SIGNAL! It's just nice, doesn't really do much, but it's yeah, relaxing. 15. For My Dear... - I love this song, usually I listen to this and find it really bad vocally, but after listening to the whole album it actually sounds really good! I still like the PCDL version more. 16. Present - a nice cute ending to the album, unfortunately, it goes back to the annoying style I disliked on the earlier songs. Favourites: A Song for ××, FRIEND, POWDER SNOW, Depend on You, from your letter, For My Dear... I actually really enjoyed the whole album, but I wouldn't want Ayu to do anything like it again, nor would I want her to re-record the whole album, it's just not good enough, even if it's enjoyable. |

I love every song on A song for XX, but her vocals always bug me.
Im ashamed to listen to this album when there's people in the house. Its like, listening to some amaterish crap. I still cant understand how this album is released. From my point of view, which is very far from japanese

Yea, me too. I appreciate it because it's from Ayumi, and one can see how far she has come. If this was all she had ever put out, I probably would've ignored her. I still like it, but that's the truth.

Ooh this sounds fun!
ASFXX is not an easy album to get into IMO. I got it back in 05 and I think it's one you can only really appreciate if you are a big Ayumi fan though there are some great songs on here for everyone (ASFXX, Powder Snow). It was only last year I got into this album properly. I listened to it a few times when I got it and liked some of the songs, but it wasn't an album I listened to often. It does sound veerrrry dated (99? Sounds more like 89 sometimes) and her vocals aren't easy on the ear, but now I am - finally - really enjoying it. Though a lot of the songs are bit of a guilty pleasure. Best songs: ASFXX Powder Snow For My Dear... - I only actually got into this song last year, after reading another review on it and watching the PCDL performance. Trust - this is one I wish she would re-record and I wish they had made more the guitar solo at the end when the song is fading out. As If... - I've only recently begun to really enjoy this song - it was always "there" before. Love the guitar solo. So yeah it's enjoyable enough - some nice guitar solos, and I do quite like the dated feel to the some of the songs - but some of the songs could benefit from be re-recorded. Especially the songs known for her lyrics like Powder Snow and ASFXX. The PVs for the album are very dull so I didn't bother to watch them lol. mi|kshake~ Last edited by mi|kshake; 4th April 2010 at 12:01 AM. |

My first Ayu album so it holds a really special place in my heart.
Prologue - It's calming, although the version in the ayu-mi-x acoustic side was better, this one still is one of my favourite intros. A Song for ×× - I really like this song, it's really easy to relate to the lyrics, kinda depressing but a real feel good song I still think. And the arrangement is just so good, the violins... Hana - Well talk about pop music, this one is just a funny poppy song, and guitar solo is pretty decent, as some other tracks uses a lot of guitar solos as well. FRIEND - As many fans know this was her very first song to be recorded by avex, before poker face, it' simply and light hearted and that's the reason I like it so much, it's a honest song that always puts me in a good mood. FRIEND II - One of my favourite album tracks, I find this song to be really a happy song, her voice is a little squeaky but it's not as bad as some others on the album. poker face - Hmmm debut single... There is nothing more to be said about this song, it does the job . PV - you know plain and simple, it's just exists, not bad nor good, just like the song it does it's job. Wishing - I always can't remember the whole tracklist of this album and this song I always forget it's existence until I'm listening to it, it's a very good ballad but forgetable. It also adds lots of nostalgia in me whenever I listen to it. YOU - Oh YOU! Her second single. This song I first heard the Agressive Mix on the Eurobeat album and still love both versions. This one is very sweet and I love everything about it. PV - Very sweet and simple, unlike poker face this one has more, I don't know, emotion? Probably. As if... - As if... I can remember this song as well, it's pretty forgetable as well, I like it but it doesn't really stand out for me. POWDER SNOW - Now this song is epic, in this form or acoustic, it's really powerfull and it gets very interesting with all the drums and bells, sounds like a X-mas song but there's another track like that as well. (Present anyone?) Trust - I don't really trust this version of the song, sorry but her voice really makes my ears bleed. Now the A BEST version is so enjoyable. PV - Meh... Ayu driving, Ayu on the beach, Ayu seating on some stairs, blah blah blah. Watch it at your own risk. Depend on you - My favourite track in the whole album, a really change of pace after all the same sounding melodies. Love it to this day, sometimes on repeat for several hours. PV - My favourite of this album, I love it's darkness daybreak feel. SIGNAL - Another best track this one has a really cheesy melody and I love it, really upbeat and leaves you wanting more. from your letter - Must have been a boring letter because this one don't really holds up to anything, I can't seem to remember it as well as some of the other tracks. Her vocals are ok here. For My Dear... - Even my grandmother likes this song so it's always a plus, her vocals are not the best, but I sense some emotion and the lyrics I really love. PV - The video is ok, way better then Trust XD Present - I used to love this song a lot when I first heard the album, but now it's just meh... Not bad as some other tracks and more memorable as well. I also feel it as a X-mas song don't know why.

Okay, our next album to listen to and discuss is: LOVEppears. I'm going to listen to it as soon as I get the free time. I would assume the second disc is optional since it is just a preview of her remix albums.
I really like reading all the reviews and seeing how opinions differ. ![]() PVs Boys & Girls - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIXlhcF9CoA appears - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaszVXUJ9kI TO BE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNMJNXemZ3M Kanariya - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9GaNeGpEf8 Fly high - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l6A2pXGotI WHATEVER - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oz7PP0_0q9U Last edited by lumieregrl; 8th April 2010 at 02:22 AM. |

LOVEppears was my first ayu album - the one that was out when I discovered her, the first one I heard a song from, the first one I owned. LOVE this album.
I love that Introduction transitions seamlessly into "Fly high", although I've never liked the album version of "Fly high" that much. It was kind of simplistic to me. The only other two songs on the album I'm not crazy about and usually skip over are "LOVE ~refrain~" and, admittedly, "kanariya" (so I guess I don't "skip" it, I just... stop the cd after "Who..." ~) Everything else, I either have serious emotional ties to, or the song is just so freaking good. My favoritest favoritest song on the album is "monochrome" though. I also really love "P.S II" - it's so unusual and so emotional.

I've been listening to LOVEppears a lot lately just because and it's really growing on me. For all the years that I've had it, the only song I that listened to was "WHATEVER" but now that I've been listening to it a lot I'm starting to hear how solid of an album it actually is. From track one to sixteen they all seem to carry the same energetic yet melancholy feeling that probably derives from it's cold, apathetic vocals and the arrangement of electronic and natural instruments. It's one of a kind.
The highlights of this album for me were: "And Then", "TO BE", "End roll", and "WHATEVER". I love "Kanariya" but not the album version unfortunately. |

That's great idea! I love projects like these. I have to re-listen all Ayu albums every month, because my favourites always change XD I dunno why. But it's one thing which won't change: GUILTY will always be my least favourite album.
I try to connect my review of both ASFXX and LOVEppears in one post soon

Second album LOVEppears this was the 5th album I bought and I don't know why, because this is some good thing.
Disc1 Introduction - WOW and WOW, this is one of the most thumping intros by her, you feel so hooked with this and the trasition is so well done to the next track which is Fly high- Now about this track, I still love the album version, but the very first song I heard from ayu was the HAl'S Mix 2000 so that version still sound so much better then this one. PV - The PV was also my first from her so it has that special feeling also, it's upbeat and I'm always happy watching it. Trauma - Another killer track, it's so upbeat as well, sometimes I find myself dancing to that routine she teached in one of her concerts XD And Then - I like this one, but it's not very very good, it flows well only not as well as the other two. immature "Album Version" - I love this song so much, it's really addictive, and it doesn't sound immature at all. Boys & Girls - So this is that song that she almost always screws up in her concerts and every fan know by heart now, it's fun it has a cool sound, it's a ayu song. Oh, and A BEST version is even better then this one. PV - Nothing to write home about, the Aube CM was more interesting then the whole PV if you ask me, still decent. TO BE - One of my favorite songs by ayu, I like the album version more then the single version, and like the Acoustic Version even more. It has a very calming sound and it flows really well. PV - I want to get drunk or stoned and watch this PV. XD Seriously, because it's so cool to watch it even sober imagine in an alterated state. End roll - I like this song, but it almost sound the same thing as the previous track, even though they're really different, maybe if they weren't placed next to each other it would be better, and better would have been if it was the HAL's MIX. P.S II - One of my favourite tracks on this album, it sounds really good and haunting, me likes it very much. WHATEVER "Dub's 1999 remix" - Wow this track has 7:20m length, still it never sounded better. The Version J is really dull. PV - This PV is really dark and I like it as well, one of my favourites from this era. too late - This track really appears too late in the album, one of the best tracks as well, lots of things happening and almost as good as the Original Version on the A single. appears "Album Version" - Ok I'm not going to lie... this track doesn't do anything for me, it's slow and boring, not bad not good just another track. It still intrigues me as why this was a single, a re-cut single. PV - Watching the video is not as bad as listening to the sole track, but it was used the single version of the song instead of the album, it doesn't make it any better as a matter of fact. monochrome - Finally my favourite tracks makes an appearence, to me this is the best song in the album, even if it's another album version (lots of album versions on this one XD). It's really different than anything in here. Still miss the door shuting down but it doesn't matter. Interlude - Nice interlude and how they came up with a song named interlude is beyond me, still is a nice bridge to the last few songs. LOVE ~refrain~ - I really like this urban feeling in the song. LOVE ~Destiny~ is still one of my favourite songs and was her first number 1, but now this version, it's not as romantic as the other one, but it sounds good. PV - The PV used was LOVE ~Destiny~ but on the CM of the album this mix was used instead so everything ends up connected. I really love this PV, it's really sweet and sad at the same time. Who... - Makes me cry, yes that's right! This song as so much emotion that it actually makes me think about my whole life in this mere 5:38m. It's a sweet song as well and the second best track here. kanariya - As almost everyone, the single version is way better then this, still it's not as bad as some tracks on the album. PV - Interesting one. Also love this PV, ayu looked really good wearing all those crystals. In conclusion, this album is a very good start if you're getting into ayu, and considering it was made in less then a year after the first one I even give it more credit. Way to go. Almost foget the second disc Disc2 ayu's EURO MEGA-MIX "Y&Co. MIX" - I love this remix compilation track, it's really fast and I don't get tired of listening to it. ayu's HOUSE MEGA-MIX "N.S House MIX" - I like this track as well not as much as the other one still is enternaaing enough. A Song for ×× ''MILLENNIUM MIX'' from 1st Album - Nothing new to say about this one, some more instruments made trough this new mix but it still sound almost the same. I'm not going to review the other tracks as they are found on the other Remix albums.

LOVEppears time!
While I listen ♥ After I did this for ASFXX I found myself listening to it more. I'm only doing the first disk, not much to say about the second. 1. Introduction - before listening to this, I was playing rollin', and really, it doesn't feel like I've gone back in time at all! Although I wouldn't choose to listen to this, it's a good opening 2. Fly high - Introduction goes really nicely into this! Comparing this to ASFXX, Ayu's vocals are much stronger, but still as emotive. I love this song, it's very... melancholy but it appears rather happy - I guess that's the feel I get for all the songs on this album. I prefer the single/PV version of this song though. I remember hearing this before I became interested in Jpop and Ayu, I think that's why I'm attached to it. 3. Trauma - Again, fly high goes right into this. This is such a catchy song, but I enjoy it more being performed live. This song confuses me though, the lyrics are rather depressing in places. At the end now, and it's got a bit tiring. 4. And Then - I love this song. The lyrics are really good in this one, and the references to ASFXX make it even more painful for me. Although Ayu sounds.. cold and unattached? I think that's part of what makes me love this track so much. I listen to the PCDL audio a lot too - because they made it awesome, if only she'd sung the whole song! 5. immature - This goes so well after And Then, that same coldness and detached voice, but still so much emotion. Like most of the songs on this album, the lyrics are really hard hitting here. I've only just began to empathise with the lyrics on LOVEppears. It's because I don't really know where I'm heading for right now. This song makes me want to cry. 6. Boys & Girls - really unexpected after immature. It's more lively than the previous songs, which is great! An Ayu classic! What else can I say? It just feels so out of place here. PV is really uninspiring though. 7. TO BE - Ugh, I don't like this song. It feels so lifeless after Boys & Girls. I'm not even half way in yet, but I really don't want to listen to any more. I will though! 8. End roll - Nicer than TO BE, I like it, but it's nothing special. I like how we get some emotion in the vocals here though, a nice change. 9. P.S II - I like this, it combines what we heard in the beginning with the emotive vocals from the previous two songs. I like it a whole lot more than TO BE and End roll - but I adore the original, so it's more to do with that than this song. 10. WHATEVER - Not my favourite version of the song, I like "version J" from the single the most. I find this track a bit long, especially the introduction and ending. I like it though. The PV is really strange, it's one of the better early PVs. 11. too late - The lyrics are great here! I agree with whoever before said this song is out of place here, it would go so much better with Trauma etc... it still works after WHATEVER however, so it's not really a complaint. 12. appears - My favourite song on the album! So beautiful! After everything else on the album, the first part of this song really made me stop and go "oh!", makes your heart skip a beat. There's something special about this song. ♥ I think this is the song that separates "Ayumi Hamasaki" from ASFXX and "Ayu the mega-star" - if you get what I mean? 13. monochrome - I like this song, but at the same time I don't. It's very strange, and one of the most interesting songs on the album. I love the visuals from the live performance of this - but considering how much I like the vocals on the original, saying Ayu's vocals on the live are squeaky would be a severe understatement! 14. Interlude - I don't see the point of this, it's nice but...yeah that's it. I guess LOVE and Who... are nothing like the rest of the album though, so it's needed to slow things down a little. 15. LOVE ~refrain~ - I don't like this. I only like ~Destiny~ a little, and this is worse than ~Destiny~. Not that my opinion really counts on this, because I like ~Since 1999~! They removed the redeeming factors of ~Destiny~ in this, and it doesn't work. 16. Who.. - So beautiful and touching, this song is so emotional - it's as if all the feelings that are suppressed throughout the album all come forward in this beautiful song. I don't listen to this much, but when I do, it's magical. After London & A WORLD IS ONE, this song makes me want to cry and it makes me feel so warm. A song that definitely makes me think of everybody who means something to me. ♥ 17. Kanariya - No. Worst song on the album, but such pretty lyrics. For me, the album ends with Who... Favourite Tracks: Fly high, And Then, immature, appears, Who... Last edited by relmy; 8th April 2010 at 10:58 PM. |

1. Introduction - It's okay I guess. I never really like to listen to it though like some of her other opening tracks.
2. Fly High - I really like this song! It's upbeat and fun, her vocals are kind of annoying at times though. The lyrics are great. 3. Trauma - I can't really get into this song. I mean I'll enjoy it when she performs it live sometimes but listening to it on its own.. not really. Her voice is a problem for me here. 4. And then - I love this song! I always have, and her performance at PCDL brought my love back for it. I really wish she'd record it with her new vocals, they're a bit too squeaky in this song. 5. immature - I don't really like this song, the arrangement is weird to me and the chorus kinda pisses me off. 6. Boys & Girls - I hate this! I'm sorry, it's all good live but the original is just so bad to me. I hate her voice here so much, it makes me want to punch things. 7. TO BE - This is a gorgeous ballad. I love it, but I prefer the 10th anniversary version to the original because again, her voice is a bit too squeaky here. 8. End roll - I love this song. love love love it. Even her voice here I like, there's something really sad and heartbreaking about the arrangement. 9. P.S II - It's so weird.. sometimes I like it sometimes I don't. Her vocals here are a lot better than in the original POWDER SNOW though. 10. WHATEVER - This is so catchy, I like it except for the length. 11. too late - No, no no.. I don't like this at all. The music/her voice is all kinds of wrong. 12. appears - It's okay. I only really like it during the christmas time, I ignore it any other time. 13. monochrome - I actually really like this but can't listen to it much because the ending really makes me mad. 14. Interlude - Kind of pointless. Nothing stands out here. 15. LOVE ~refrain~ - Well, this is kind of unique. It's very pretty and nice and I like her vocals here. 16. Who... - I like the song, but I don't like her vocals at all. 17. kanariya - Her vocals are painful.. really don't like this. I listen to it only when I want to laugh at how squeaky she gets, it reminds me of my cat. Overall it's an okay album but a lot of songs sound the same.. there's not really a lot of variety. If I only heard this album from ayu I'd probably be turned off by her because of the lack of variety and squeakiness of her voice. Favorite tracks: TO BE, End roll, Fly high Least favorites: kanariya, Trauma, too late PV's Boys & Girls - I don't really like it, it's pretty boring. I only liked the parts where she looked out the window because she looked pretty there. appears - I actually like this PV! Ayu looks really natural and sweet in the black & white parts, those are my favorites ![]() TO BE- NO! I hate this PV so much Such a beautiful song deserves a PV that doesn't look so.. amateur.Kanariya - It's okay. It's kind of creepy/weird but I don't have a problem with it. Fly high - It's cute, I like it, it's not one of my favorites though. WHATEVER - It's creepy.. I'm not a big fan of it to be honest. Overall the PV's aren't really impressive to me on this album.

Like...
3) Trauma - I love the guitar intro! The bridge reminds me of another song... 4) And Then - One of my favorite songs on this album, although it's pretty "same sounding" throughout. Is it just me or does it feel 80s-ish? 6) Boys & Girls - This song's sound stands out on this album like Depend on You does on ASFXX, imo; they remind me of each other every time I listen to them. <3 7) TO BE - I haven't checked on the lyrics for this song in a long time, but I love the sweet, innocent feeling it has. The melody sticks in my mind so easily. 12) appears -Album Version- Love this song...well this version of it--not so crazy about the single version. 16) Who... - This one has grown on me over time, it's beautiful though and the melody is memorable like TO BE's. Not so much... 1) Introduction - Eh, not a big fan of this; imo, it sounds cheap. 2) Fly High - This okay, but I usually skip it. The only version of Fly High I've truly liked was in one of her tours (I think 07?). 5) immature -Album Version- The only part of this song I ever remember is the chorus...It's alright, not a favorite. 8) End roll - Reminds me of a different song, but which one?? Sheesh. 9) P.S. II - Hm, I've never listened to this track all the way through. It feels like a mess with the base line. 10) WHATEVER -Dub's 1999 Club Remix- Not a fan of this style of dance music...is it trance? 11) too late - It seems like there's a remix of this I enjoy more than the original song, but I can't find it in my library. 13) monochrome - I haven't heard this one before. Wow, at the beginning (0:21-0:37) and again at 1:49-2:05 the faint piano reminds me of Savage Garden's Carry On Dancing melody...it sounds almost exactly the same. Anyone else hear this? 14) Interlude - Eh. 15) LOVE~refrain~ - Another one I haven't heard. zzzz 16) Kanariya - Hmm...much prefer the remix. No doubt of this. zzzzz No wonder I don't listen to this album much. I like it more than ASFXX, it's an improvement.

Duty
I swear the days are flying by lately.
![]() Next album up for discussion is: Duty. It seems like the one time I listened to this album, I was really bored, but I was also very distracted. We'll see if I think differently this time. But, vogue and Surreal are two of the best songs ever. ![]() Surreal - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gUFCHjJJeY (one of my favorite Ayu videos!) vogue/far away/seasons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGTp38I8Tw4 Wow, there are only two pvs for this album...although I suppose you could say four if you split vogue/far away/seasons up. |

1. starting over - This intro is one of my least favorite intros ever. The "la la la"'s annoy me so much.
2. Duty - AMAZING song. One of my favorites of hers. It's definitely a unique one in her discography. 3. vogue - Everything, and I mean everything, annoys me about this song. There is not one part of it I like. The worst part I would say is her vocals, they sound like a dying cat. 4. End of the world - The arrangement is amazing! This is on the same level of Duty to me, very strong track and one of my favorites. I love the long "ii"'s 5. SCAR - Interesting, I'm not too fond of the intro but her voice actually sounds really pretty here and I love the melody. 6. Far away - I *HATE* this song. It's one of the most annoying songs in her discography imo. It's all in her voice and the background music. It gives me a headache, I always stay clear of this song. 7. SURREAL - I hate her voice here, it makes the song not listenable for me. 8. AUDIENCE - Voice, arrangement, everything about this song is annoying One of her worsts imo.9. SEASONS - The melody is very pretty, but again, her voice ruins this song for me. No matter how many times I try, I can't get past it. 10. teddy bear - This song is so simple and beautiful and touching. It's one of my favorites from her. The vocals aren't perfect but they're not so bad that I can't listen to it like some of the others on this album. I love the emotion in this song. 11. Key ~eternal tie ver.~ - LOVE this! It's absolutely beautiful. My favorite part about it is the chorus and the gorgeous lyrics, they're some of her best in my opinion. 12. girlish - A very annoying track, I can't listen to the whole thing because of her vocals and the nauseating arrangement. Overall, this album is one of my least favorites of ayu's, but it still has some amazing tracks that I would consider some of her best. But, the bad songs here are just not listenable to me and I consider them to be some of her weakest, which is why as an album it's one of my least favorites. It's still hard for me to believe that this is the album that so many people are proud to call their favorite and claim that it's so much better than her recent stuff. As a whole it just doesn't work for me at all.
