This doesn't make sense to me as Ayu still performs on Kouhaku each year and Music Station Super Live (last year at least) and also still covers big magazines like ViVi. Kuu doesn't get any of those anymore so I wouldn't be surprised with people forgetting her but Ayu still gets a nice promotional push when it comes to the end of the year events and magazines.

I used to think that way too until I asked japanese people and read online as well.

Spoiler:
Not everyone watches Kouhaku and if they do, the opening performance (which is always ayu) almost always has the lowest views.

Ayu also tends to perform a greatest hits medley, or an old song on televised music programs, so to them she's singing an oldie. When she does sing something new most people don't know it's new, they just think it's one of her songs.

So no one is checking for her anymore in japan. She has a strong fan base still who like her hits and her shows but not so much her new stuff.

Most people in japan do think she's not around anymore which is actually a pretty positive reaction in my opinion, others who do know she's still around tend to have a strong, and negative opinion about her and her "scandals". A lot of people think she uses younger boy friends to promote her music which a lot of japanese people find dishonorable and tacky.

They see her as an obachan who has faded. I am glad she doesn't live in japan anymore people to treat her well there, at least she's away from all that negativity.

^ I am confused.

Ignoring Hamasaki does not make her any less relevant. It just means that a hell lot of people miss out on her newest stuff by design. Apparently certain people happen to fall for their own delusional belief that wilful ignorance diminishes or affects the status of a famous person in any way.

It certainly does not o.o

The Japanese attitude makes me confusing... Ayu is better, more beautiful than many artists, her performance, her music is not bad at all. I don't know why she isn't supported as Namie or Koda Kumi nowadays. The reason is Scandal ? So the Japanese disengage their diva because of her private marriage, not her music ? I start to have the bad standpoint about the Japanese for their ridiculous think !
About the scandal, I think AKB48 members have more !
p/s : Sorry about this hot temperature for the post !

^It's not like Koda has all that suport either, according to japanese people she is pretty much over too. Ayu's place on the industry isn't much different than Madonna's... There are a lot of people unaware she did anything after Music (2000) or even Vogue (1990)

^ Everyone I've ever run into (Not that this gets brought up all this much) has definitely heard of Hung Up, and 4 Minutes.. I mean nothing as far as album content but her singles still do fairly as far as popularity Idk about sales. I hope Ayu can bring her self up though cause as far as her performing I've never seen someone have better tours than her. Like even though lelio was murdered by that MV I'm sure it will be brought back to life in the concert.

Agree with you, Daeklei ! Ayu 's concert is the only one that I enjoy to the end . Although Namie, Koda Kumi, Kana Nishino, miwa 's concerts are very good but I can't hold on ...

This is actually wrong as all those Ayu releases outsold the Kuu releases you mentioned but the comparisons are kinda wrong. It should be BV vs Colours, JAPONESQUE tour vs CDL 2014, and the single one is fine but Kuu never outsold Ayu in singles since her peak.

Anyway Kuu's sexy image turns a lot of people off while Ayu is a bit classier but she gets bad press for other things.

I´m not tring to prove anything but actually that is wrong...

Bon voyage first week sales=46,091 and month rank number 5 (Oricon Chart) / Love Again first week sales= 53,065 and month rank number 3 with 79,091 (Oricon chart)

Single Dreaming Now! first week sales was 21,135 copies sold and number 9 that week. / FTL - MGR first week sales was 30,385 copies sold and number 5.

LOVE again sold 88,825 eventually though.

This time I'm not sure if it will be able to pass 50,000.

That's 2 lives. Ayu used to do 2 live appearances in the same evening back in the day.

Back in the day she was in every single corner of Japan. That's not the case anymore, she's not the it girl from the moment, it's normal. I really can't understand sometimes people keep complaining about her "not being everywhere anymore". She has a 16-year carreer and her peak is over since 2002/2003, her situation is not unusual for a popstar (and it's not even that bad, Ayu is 'surviving' pretty well imo).

I read a rumor that said she went to an izakaya with her husband a while ago in Japan and no one really noticed her.

It probably helps that she's been living in LA for a whiiile now. She's been relatively outside of the public eye outside of the occasional performance or two on TV and ~scandal~ that have happened once in a while since 2007-2008 so I'm not surprised if most people don't really know what's going on with her.

I think it's fine she's no longer the 'it' girl. She already stated in 2003/4 that "her era is over" (in the 2004 Documentary, iirc). She's fine with it. Remember Don't Look Back's lyrics: "People always start talking about the times when they shined the brightest; that is just too sad." It doesn't bother her that she isn't super popular anymore.

If she isn't bothered, then neither should we. As long as she continues to release music, it's ok, right? Her latest interviews show that she wants to continue making music for a loooooong time.
