1「Step In To My World」
世界や宇宙を意味する「UNIVERSE」という言葉をタイトルに冠にした本作に収められた、まだ見ぬ新し い世界へと誘うアルバムの導入部的な意味合いに加え、続く「Can We Go Back」に連なる壮大なイントロでもあり、SHOWの開演を待つ観客の昂揚感をあおるライブのオープニン グ的な要素も含んでいる。

2「Can We Go Back」
アルバムのリードトラックとして完全限定生産盤でリリースされる自身46枚目のシングル。ヘッドバンキング 必死のハードなロックナンバーで、サウンドも潔くてシャープ。彼女はR&Bシンガーだが、心の叫びにも似た 力強くワイルドな歌声をフルに活かした曲を聴かされると、ハードロックとの相性も抜群であることを痛感させ られる。

3「SUPER STAR」
アコギのカッティングを基調にしたアップテンポのポップチューン。「あなたのスーパースターになりたい」と 願う女の子のふわふわと舞うような恋心が描かれている。何度も繰り返される「I wanna be」というフレーズに、「いつかあなたの側に置いて欲しい」という想いの強さが現れているようだ 。

4「You're So Beautiful」
「どんな時でもがんばるあなたは美しい」と歌う、スタンダードな魅力にあふれたミドルバラード。冒頭のアレ ンジがアコギのリフと手拍子と歌というシンプルなアレンジになっているのは、なによりもメロディが愛しくて 切ないから。「超えられない壁なんてない￥><自分に腹が立つ時も自分の道を選んでいく」というメッセージ は、涙を流して立ち尽くしている聴き手に投げかけるとともに、自身に言い聞かせる言葉でもあるのだろう。こ れからの彼女の代表曲となっていく予感がする名曲である。

5「Lick me 」
個性の違う3曲を集めた夏のシングル「3 SPLASH」収録曲。本人が「キャッチーでカラオケでも歌える曲」と語っていた通り、思わず一緒に手拍子 をしながら歌いたくなる、華やかで明るいナンバー。ブレッジでは重めのエレキギターとのデュエットやスペー シーなSEも入っており、軽快なサウンドながらも本作の予兆も感じさせる。

6「Work It Out!」
ポップな広がりをもちつつも、怒りをぶつけるかのようにシャウトするロックナンバーで、働く女子に捧げるメ ッセージソングでもある。仕事に対して楽しみを見いだせない人に対して、周囲のことを気にするのではなく、 自身の未来に目を向けるべきだと歌っている。彼女自身は音楽という仕事を楽しんでやっているが、周りの視線 を気にせずに自分の内面を見つめ直すというのは、本作を通して語られる共通のテーマでもある。

7「No Way」
さまざまな音色で彩られたエレクトロ寄りのサウンドのなかから涙とともに浮かび上がってくるのは、クラシカ ルなピアノの余韻を残す大人のラブソング。真剣な話をしている女子に対し、タバコを吸いながらうわの空の男 子。この不穏なムードから逃げ出すのではなく、なんとか気持ちを届けようという姿勢に、27歳になった彼女 の恋愛観が表れているよう。

8「Stay」
ピアノのループと打ち込みをベースにした、シンプルだけどチャーミングな愛にあふれたラブソング。「あなた が笑う理由が私であって欲しい」そして「いつも側にいる」というフレーズは、「SUPERSTAR」にも通 じる、彼女が恋愛に求める根っこの部分であり、本質でもあるのだろう。片思いの人、恋人同士、夫婦にもおく りたい、愛を告白するバレンタインデーにぴったりの曲である。

9「Comes Up」
メロディアスで明るいポップナンバーでありながらも愛しさと切なさを感じずにはいられないブルージーな魅力 にあふれた楽曲。ライブの後半に会場を回り、観客により近付いて歌う姿も想像できるサウンドで、歌詞では「 口数が多過ぎて言い過ぎることもある面倒くさいやつだけど隣にいさせて欲しい」と自身の心境を正直に綴って いる。

10「Physical Thing」
「Alive」とのダブルAサイド仕様でリリースされた45枚目のシングル。重低音のきいたハードでクール なダンストラックで、強がってるけれども本当は寂しいんだという強がりな女性の孤独な心を描いている。歌詞 には大人の彼女だからこそ歌えるセクシーな表現も多いが、身体で感じるヘヴィーなサウンドとよく似合ってい る。

11「ECSTACY」
ヘビーなギターとメンズの叫びで幕をあける、セクシーな色気が漂うロックナンバー。エレクトロ、ハードロッ ク、R&B……と様々な音楽の要素が内包されており、アヴァンギャルドでユーモラスでもあるが、なおかつポ ップたりえるのは、彼女のブランド力と見事なセンスによるものだろう。

12「UNIVERSE」
ファットなエレベとクラップによるビートがフィジカルにストレート に響く、彼女の真骨頂ともいるスペーシーなR&B / ヒップホップ系のナンバー。アルバムのタイトルを冠にしている通り、歌詞にはアルバム全体をまとめるメッセ ージが込められている。 <一度きりの人生を後悔しないためにも前に進み続けていく>という決意表明は、倖田來未というアーティスト の姿勢や佇まいを最も象徴するスローガンだろう。

13「It's all Love!」
姉妹の初コラボとして話題となった43枚目のシングルはバンドサウンドによるクールなロックナンバー。歌詞 はふたりの共作で、失恋した妹を姉がアドバイスするという構成。ハスキーで独特のくせのある姉と開放的なハ イトーンが魅力の妹により掛け合いは興奮度が高い。踊れる姉だからこそ出せるタイム感と妹を支えるタフなグ ルーヴにも注目して聴いて欲しい。

14「Alive」
映画「カムイ外伝」の主題歌として書き下ろされた45枚目のシングル。監督から提示されたテーマは、ヘンデ ルのオペラ「リドリヒ」のなかのアリア「私を泣かせてください」に日本語歌詞をのせるというもの。彼女らし い<振り向かずに歩いていく>というフレーズもあるものの、全体としては言い様のない孤独や先の見えない不 安が描かれており、オペラが原曲というオーケストラによるサウンドも含め、彼女にとっては新しい挑戦に満ち た1曲となった。

1「Step In To My World」
This work is titled [UNIVERSE] which means the world and space. In addition to an introduction that seems to invite you to an unseen new world, it also includes a grand intro that stretches into [Can We Go Back]. Furthermore it contains the component similar to a live opening that stirs up the excitement of the waiting audience.

2「Can We Go Back」
It’s the album’s lead track and is also released as her 46th single (limited edition). It’s a hard-rock number with a pure, sharp sound. She’s an R&B singer, but when this song that fully uses her powerful and heartfelt voice is heard, it makes you fully realize her compatibility with hard-rock and its excellence.

3「SUPER STAR」
An up-tempo pop tune based around an acoustic guitar. A love is pictured of a casually dancing girl that wishes, “I want to be your superstar”. The often-repeated phrase “I wanna be” expresses the strength of the feeling “I want to be by your side someday”.

4「You're So Beautiful」
“You who always keeps trying are beautiful”, this is a standard ballad overflowing with charm. The opening arrangement is a simple arrangement of a guitar riff and beating the time(?) because the melody is more dear and heartrending that anything else. “There are no walls that can’t be climbed. I go on choosing my path even at times when I’m mad at myself.” Together with throwing this message at her crying, motionless listeners, it might also holds instructions for herself. It’s a masterpiece that I predict will from now on become her representative song.

6「Work It Out!」
While holding a poppy extent, it’s a rock number that shouts angrily. It also holds a message to working women. To people who can’t find joy in their work, she sings not to worry about your surroundings and to keep your eyes on your own future. She herself enjoys her work in music. The common theme of this piece is to look within yourself without worrying about looks from the people around you.

7「No Way」
A sound similar to electro with various tunes rises to the surface together with tears. An adult love song that leaves behind the lingering melody of a classical piano. Seriously talking women in contrast with absent-minded smoking men. This 27-year-old women’s philosophy of love is expressed by the attitude that tries to convey her feelings without escaping from the song’s anxious mood.

8「Stay」
A simple but charming love song with a piano loop. The phrases “I want to be the reason of your smile” and “I’m always be your side”, like [SUPERSTAR], have as root and essence a girl searching for love. She wants to send it to people with unrequited love, pairs of lovers and also to married couples. It’s the perfect song for Valentine’s Day when you declare your love.

9「Comes Up」
While being a melodious and bright pop tune, it is also a tune overflowing with a charm that can’t be heard without feeling love and pain. In the lyrics her mental state is honestly composed, “I want to be allowed to stay by your side even though I am bothersome because I talk too much.”

12「UNIVERSE」
A fat elevation(?) and a beat according to claps echoes physically and straight. A spacey R&B and hip-hop number that shows her true worth. It has the same title as the album and in the lyrics the entire album’s message is included. The determined declaration “I keep going forward in order to not regret my one life”, might be a slogan that symbolizes Koda Kumi’s attitude and appearance the most.

PLease please please let No way be GaGa's No Way. One of my favorite songs by GaGa and it would be a pleasure to hear Koda Kumi sing it.
Oh and for those who don't know Gaga's No Way is a demo. It never has been officially released so technically it wouldn't be a cover. Word is it was a demo rejected by Britney Spears.
