how about if she went hiatus....and a year later, a CM came up...showing of the new ayu with a new single...a cm like "A BEST"....that would probably attract more people...

a lot of Japanese people think that Ayumi Hamasaki had been on hiatus since 2004
many people think that she's not singin anymore
only her fans knows

Yet they are all familiar with songs like HEAVEN, STEP you and BLUE BIRD which were released in 2005 and 2006.

2004 O_o it's a bit exaggerated lol all japanese have at least heard about her until 2008 when she became deaf it was a big big new ! and in 2007 she was everywhere when she released A BEST II ! Since then I can understand people think she is in hiatus because she has drastically stopped to be ultra exposed.

yeah, nobody will notice her hiatus. she just can come back to tv right now and appear there at least 2-3 times a week and people will be like "oh, ayu's come back? she's alive? she's got new songs?"

I'm so sorry to admit that all her new releases are totally underground right now. like, nobody knows about them. if only she appeared at tv, not just once, but at least three - four times...

Her career is so depressing...oh well, we can be proud of the things she achieved in her twenties.

I do not see anything depressing about her career. Depressing would be if she went crazy after her decline in sales and stopped making music. She is still making it for her fans. Will she ever have a "comeback" ala Namie (Namie was rock bottom before her comeback)? Who knows. Honestly as long as she makes music for her fans that is all that matters at the end of the day. She will be like Matsuda Seiko & Madonna. Her albums may not sell terribly well, but she will always be "known" and sell out tours for the rest of her career

There's a channel on iLive that plays nothing but her music videos. I have installed a plugin to my media server "Serviio" to stream these channels to my TV directly. I had it on last night while I was getting ready for bed and I would start watching one and get distracted. It made me realize even the videos which I thought weren't so great at the time (fated, GREEN) were MUCH better than anything as of late...

yep that's all that matter, for me too <3
she hasn't gone "crazy" ala Britney Spears shaving her head, so Ayu is still in a safe mode.
