If Ayu announced that she will retire, I wonder what the reaction would be like.

I feel like she could never do it at least at this point.

I feel like she would say she was going on an indefinite hiatus or something similar.

Now that she has released WORDS into the open, I hope that we see more music from her soon. WORDS, and two other original ballads would be perfect for an A BALLADS 2.

I think there would be a lot of mean comments

If Ayu announced her retirement, I would certainly be upset but I doubt the general public would care all that much. She's not exactly riding a career high at this moment.

I think there has been an unhealthy obsession this year with the idea of Ayu's retirement.

Partially it has come up because of Namie's pending retirement.

Now that someone mentioned it, I cant live without Ayu to be honest
If Ayu retired, Jpop means nothing anymore to me.
A-nation would be so empty.
But then... yeah it is her decision after all and her health is what matters now

I dont think so, it is still a huge lost to the industry, she is still well respected among the artists and staffs in the industry. Her friends will surely miss her and fans.

Just saw a tv news about TK’s message to Namie and they went to visit a fan, was so sad. So I guess the reaction would be pretty much the same for Ayu. She has a stable fan base in Japan though still

I fear that if she retires because she completely lost her hearing, people will go like "She actually made some really good music these past years." That people will appreciate her after it's too late.

She doesn't seem like someone who'll retire without being forced to. I guess meeting that perfect melody would be one reason. Another health. She doesn't seem like she'll retire because of her private life.

Ayu, Hikki, Ai-chin, Namie, Kumi - I think of them (and others) as My Generation. Even if I'm not a fan of all of them, I listen to some music by all of them. If they'd be all gone, would it be the end of JPop to me? Would I even find a "substitute"? If there hasn't been one until now, would there ever be one? Would only a kind of renaissance of the 90s make it possible?
I think to me it was natural for them to be around, to the point where I didn't even think of them retiring someday. Same for SMAP.

I do think she'll need to find a home for We are the QUEENS though.

And the only way to do that is probably some kind of greatest hits.

I would be very sad if that happened. But it's inevitable. Her health is not good.

Sayonara came up on shuffle a bunch of times and the finale really makes my heart ache for Ayu

I really worry for her if she has to retire or go on a true hiatus. This has been her world for more than half her life. She can only retire when she really wants to.

Now, that Namie's announced her retirement, I selfishly hope that Ayu doesn't. Even though the two aren't related, they are my two favorite artists. Although, honestly I can't picture Ayu fully retiring no matter what anyway.

I do wonder how this announcement might effect Ayu's 20th anniversary though; Namie kind of stole the thunder for the next year, lol.

Ayu will retire no matter what. She is human and can't do it forever. Every person retires no matter what their profession is. Whether Ayu retires tomorrow or 10 years from now is yet to be seen. Anyone can retire or take a break at any moment as we learned with Utada and Namie.
Ever since Ayu's announcement that her hearing is not doing well, every time she does anything it's somehow a hidden sign that she is retiring or something. What's the point of sitting around trying to predict the end of Ayu and being devastated over something that has not happened?

She’s not going deaf though. I’m not saying that Ayu can’t perform and be deaf but it’d be a difficult road for her.

I wouldn't mind if Ayu decides to slow down her activities.

I have the feeling that if she keep doing her super long tours each year, it's only a matter of few years before she would be forced to give up everything... While if she make shorter live tour and not every year, she would rest and keep working in the industry for a long time without forcing too much on her health.
