I did honestly not expect this. Really. When I saw this just now I was really shocked!
It's really sad that this already has to end like this. Maybe they wanted to marry so fast because they thought that if they are in a bond like this it will be easier to deal with the distance?
I hope for BOTH of them that they can overcome this and stay on good terms and also taht both of them can find someone in the future that is just right for them and not so far away. I think they both deserve to be happy.

And yeah as people here has been saying, distance relationship is bad moreover it's marriage.

It's just sad that it end this quickly, I expected it will be longer but no one knows what's coming right?

I can't see how Japan will react about this though, they're cruel to these kind of cases

honestly i thought this marriage was a joke from the very beginning lol. i mean a superstar with a model living apart as a husband and a wife, it just scream divorce.

I think I'm more disappointed than anything.

She got married so fast, and she was heavily criticised by people saying this would happen, especially with their unique circumstances. I wanted her to prove everyone wrong.

I think I find it even more bizarre because I got with my boyfriend around the same time Ayu married Mannie, and I'd known him since the September (we met at Uni), so a month or so less than Ayu knew Mannie.

While Ayu is a lot older than me, so views relationships differently, it really put her relationship into a time wise perspective... even now there's things I'm discovering about him... I can't imagine what that first year of a relationship experience would have been like married and on different continents.

I think it's a sad situation but I don't know... the nature of their relationship makes it unsurprising I guess

Anyway, from what people said about her countdown live, i knew maybe something bad was happening backwards.

It would be the same if they remained married, because they were never together. So it's not that surprising this "separation". Time and dedication is what makes a relationship grow, i think.

Not surprising, I thought it won't last a year, I guess most of us knew this was going to end that way. They didn't mentioned each other at all (on twitter, TA etc) for almost whole year, did not meet (as far as we know), it could either mean they wanted to keep privacy on hardcore level or they didn't feel like being together.

I just feel bad that Ayu's infatuation had to turn into marriage, they could just be lovers for the time being, who gets married after knowing each other for 4 months? But well, it's Ayu, she does what she wants and she can handle it, it's feels bad thinking "see, I told you it will happen"

Btw, for some strange reason I don't think she would move to USA if the earthquake had not occured, she had so many tour plans, so many people in Japan she wouldn't leave, I don't really think that's what she wanted. She said in the past that she doesn't want to live anywhere else than Japan.

Also, I don't think that the decision about the divorce happened just now and Ayu will be sad from now on, I think she thought it over long time ago but waited for the right moment.

The last thing someone breaking up wants to hear is how bad a mistake she made even starting it. Hope everyone just chills about how it was "bound to failure" and realise what a bold choice she made to stay in Japan especially after the earthquake. If she was selfish she'd be with him sun tanning in LA.

Even if she didn't love him anymore (which I highly doubt it) does it really matter right now? What she needs now is a shoulder to lean on and that's what fans are supposed to do.

I thought it would be difficult with the language differences and the distance (and both having careers like they do), but it's a shame to see it happen.

I don't think it was bound to failure though, if everything went how she was planning it to be.. But life sometimes gets in the way of love. I think she made the right decision and I respect her for her patriotism and her sense of respect.
Anyways, I hope she'll be fine

Well not cruel as literally, harsh maybe but I'm not so sure.
Somehow I see that Japaneses that I know relate her as a superstar but with not-so-good public image, she's good but still have that bad twist somewhere maybe because of her voice, her 'plastic' looks etc etc problems.

Namie and Hikki instead have a brighter reputation as far as I know, and they're more low profile in terms of nearly everything in their life so public there doesn't really show a major reaction.

@ sibby: if you don't acknowledge you made a mistake, how are you supposed to correct it?

In my opinion, mistakes are only resolvable only if you recognize you made them. Of course she made a very patriotic decision, and of course that's very honorable and responsible of her, but unfortunately when you choose something you have to deal with the consequences that such decision carries.

Personally, i would have choosen my relationship, yes you all are gonna call me selfish,but imho there are many ways to help people without sacrificing something i also love (in this case, her husband).

actually Namie had a backlash in her career for a few years because of her divorce... as for Utada I never knew she was married.
