IS SAKURAI SHUN'S RETIREMENT A CALCULATED MOVE BY ABE SHINZO'S GOVERNMENT?

On June 3, the Ministry of Internal Affairs & Communications announced the retirement of their Vice Minister, Sakurai Shun (62). The announcement caused an uproar since there is no mandatory retirement age for a Vice Minister and it's very strange to retire after a year since his promotion.

"His retirement is not a "dismissal", but a "next move" by the government. Since the beginning, the one who has been backing him up is Abe Shinzo's wing-man, the Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga Yoshihide (67). There are talks about Suga-shi's intention to run the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) with Sakurai-shi," says a source.

On June 6, a survey by Sports Hochi revealed that the current Tokyo Governor, Masuzoe Yoichi, has lost more than 90% support from the citizens after being accused of corruption. In the same survey, Sakurai Shun came up #3 for "The Most Fitting Tokyo Governor". Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office commented, "If they decide on Sakurai-shi, we'll give him a big welcome".

This strengthens the speculation that Sakurai-shi's sudden retirement from the ministry is a part of the government's plan to welcome him into the political world through the House of Councillors election and thus, helping LDP to win the next general elections.

Born in Gunma prefecture, Sakurai Shun began working for the ministry after graduating from Tokyo University in 1977. His vast contributions in the IT department earned him the title "Mr. IT" with a reputation as an ultra-elite official. In July 2015, he was promoted to the Vice Minister position on the highest level of bureaucracy, while maintaining his "sincere and humble" personality.

Adding to Sakurai-shi's popularity is the existence of his son, Sakurai Sho, a member of Japan's national idol group ARASHI.

"This is the era of popular democracy. Arashi fans, mostly the younger generation, who never had any interest in voting, might carry themselves to the elections. That's a point that the Liberal Democratic Party cannot ignore."

It is said that if Sakurai Shun's entrance into the political world is realised, their next interest will be his son.

"Being a newscaster for so many years, with a wide range of knowledge in social and political issues, the attraction towards the political world in Sho-kun should have been activated. Sho-kun is carrying his father's DNA, can he stand being a mere idol forever? There are talks about that."

Arashi to hold 5 dome tour starting November

Arashi are back with their dome tour again this year. The group's upcoming tour, titled "ARASHI LIVE TOUR 2016-2017," is scheduled to kick off in November.

This time, the boys will be performing at 5 major dome venues, which include Sapporo Dome, Tokyo Dome, Kyocera Dome Osaka, Nagoya Dome, and Fukuoka Yahuoku! Dome. The tour schedule can be seen below.
