I received an email from cdjapan today saying they have upgraded my shipping method to EMS for FREE because the weight exceeded the limitations for the shipping method I chose.
Does that mean I have a free gift? or just that it took them this long to realise the limited box is quite large?

Well because they have not receive your payment, but those who already paid via paypal, money order, or concealed cash, cdj have receive the payment.
Credit card always have certain problems around the whole world. Some shops would charge u an admin fee for using, because there are more work to be done, and not to mention that the bank will charge them a certain amount. And also cash payment is most welcome, as they receive the money instantly. While credit card have a chance of rebounding, aka fraud. There are many reasons for this, it might be a stolen card, so the shop won't get any money if the owner were to report just after the card was used. As the bank will cancel all transactions, but the thief have already walk away with the stolen items. For online stores, the risk is higher, as they will charge you after the item is ship. Therefore the loss of the online store is higher, as they won't get any money from the items, and worst part is they have to pay for the shipping. In the future, just pay with paypal. Afterall, your credit card can be link to paypal too.
