I really doubt she's about to retire anytime soon. Like everyone said, Virgin Road is for her mother. And she's had songs like this before.
Also, when you say "L" in roman numerals is "50" or "last" keep in mind that "L" is the last single in the 3 single project

Considering Matsuda Seiko, Nakamori Akina, and others are still singing after almost 30 years, don't worry, I think Ayu will be the same LOL

I need some clarification here - I'm getting confused about Ayu's Twitter situation and the "retiring"/"take a break" issue - what did Ayu say? Is she taking a break? Well, already someone said earlier she's not retiring, but is Ayu about to take a break in 2011???

she said wanted to go to Paris, NY, LA, Hawaii... she said next year wanted to take a break / vacation... she can't be working without stop all her life, mygosh... she is the hardest working lady in music, she deserves takes a vacation.

I think she will never retire.

Maybe she want to take a one-year hiatus from the music and its changing competitive landscape?

I highly doubt that. She didn't retire after GUILTY got #2... I don't even think she flinched, and that was much bigger than the single streak.

If anything, after L, she may relax more and get back to what makes her happy. #1s mean very little Ayu... just A LOT to us because we want Ayumi to be the best solo artist in Japanese history. She deserves it.

If we see a new album before or right at January, it is highly likely she will be on hiatus for about 7 months. She does this after every dual release within a calendar year (I am... and RAINBOW in 2002, and (miss)understood and Secret in 2006 both had long breaks before new singles came).

Once again, even woodland critters are coming into town going "WTF... Ayu is NOT retiring", Ayu will not be retiring anytime soon. Music is her life, she loves the fans and Matsuura too much to just drop off the scene.

I really hope we don't see Ayu doing this in 20 years:

I am still disturbed every time I see that cover. I'm just like.. whoa...

If anything about Ayu changes for the landscape, it will be bringing back some elements that went missing from her older music. Ayumi loves doing what makes her happy, and we will always love her, but I doubt she would become a goth rocker or start singing Operatic duets with KOKIA.

And I really hope she doesn't do the Matsuda thing like that album cover shows...

I really do wish Ayu would take like, a year break. Sure AHS might cry, but she's a person, not just a singer. Like what Utada Hikaru is doing, who has spent practically most of her life in fame - I want Ayu to spend more time as Ayumi Hamasaki the person, rather than Ayumi Hamasaki the celebrity. I appreciate so much the work she puts in and how much she cares for her fans, but she needs to think of her own happiness too. And yes, I know making music makes her happy, but doesn't everyone deserve to have some time to make just themselves happy, not everyone else?

Utada is different. When I heard her announce hiatus, I nearly screamed.

2 and a half years since her last Jpop single or album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And she didn't do much of anything with This Is The One in that space of time either!!

You know who really deserves a break? Ayumi... The woman who has more health issues, stress, and A LOT busier of a schedule than Hikki. Now, if Utada were to come back and say that after punching out 50 singles, 11 albums, over 20 remix albums, 5 best-of collections, and over 90 PVs in the last 10 years, I *might* take her seriously. For now, she has royally pissed me off... but I will STILL be all over her next record.

I was going to say that she seems to be putting tons of work into her music, and that it's pretty much her life (like every other member said). I don't think she will stop anytime soon. Maybe a hiatus, sure (everyone knows she needs a break!), but as for stopping music forever? I think that part of her-the really big part of her- will die.

I don't believe that ayu will ritire soon.
But; ok, she said that music is her life >> is this a good justification, even stronger that this reading of L's lyrics, that she'll never ritire?

IMO she will get a break of a few months after the next album...

Normal people works harder than her and can't enter on a "1 year vacation"... I think she should take some time in order to control her overexposure, but never cuz "she needs it too much"... Even when she travels to different countries, she doesn't go to those places only to work... The girl is resting when she feels like it

I agree. I know its a lot of work to be Ayumi, but she has time to play too, and spend bajillions of yen. She has been known to spend hours on twitter alone. I think the whole overworked Ayu needs a break thing is purely constructed by her fans. I don't think she needs a break.

^off-topic - AHH an Ayu fan in Tucson!! I just moved from there last month~
back on-topic - I think Ayu meant that she wants to travel to these places for vacation or whatever, but I doubt she will be taking an extended break like some people are saying. It would be nice if she did take at least a year off to rest, get some fresh ideas or whatever, but I personally don't see that happening. Ayu is too dedicated to her music and fans to take such a long period off. But of course this is just my opinion, and she could in fact be planning an extended break. We all know she deserves it, she's been working pretty much non-stop for 10+ years. Whatever she decides to do, I will be happy with it. I just wish she would sleep more, haha.

I really don't think Ayu would retire completely. I do wish she'd get a break, but like she said she does love music and it's her life. I hope AVEX lets her take a break so she can relax and maybe even get inspired- not that there's anything wrong now, her music/voice is GODLY now.

Just to be assured, Ayu has an iPhone 4, like me. Now she can just tweet as much as she wants with that iPhone...

i've been a ahs memebr since May and ayu shoul dhave already retired like 10 times according to people and their thoeries
Ayumi's life is her music.
Without it she would die.
Plus if we look at EnergizE's obvious lyrics
"Put your hands up together
Let me sing forever"
I dont think these show signs of reitrement...
