Shige to appear in drama "Nigatsu no Shousha"

It was announced on Apr 19th that Shige will be appearing in NTV’s Saturday night slot drama (10 p.m. every Saturday) for the summer season beginning July 2020.

The drama is going to be a live drama adaptation of the popular manga, “Nigatsu no Shousha ~Zettai Goukaku no Kyoushitsu”, illustrating the situation of sixth graders preparing for middle school entrance exams.

The drama will star Yagira Yuya as Kuroki Kuroudo, a super cram school teacher who teaches the students life survival skills, and Shige plays Kuroki’s ex-subordinate, elite cram school teacher Haitani Jun.

Haitani used to respect and look up to Kuroki, but has a hard time forgiving Kuroki for quitting the cram school suddenly, and sets off to find out what Kuroki truly feels and what his motivation really is.

On playing Haitani Jun

I’m extremely honoured to be part of this drama, alongside Yagira-san and Inoue (Mao)-san, as well as the directors and staff who’ve created countless dramas.

While I have had roles as teachers and cram school teachers so far, this drama is less about the role’s profession, but more of how he is as a person.
Haitani Jun is a teacher at a prestigious cram school that’s rival to where the leading character Kuroki works at. However, Haitani used to be Kuroki’s kohai, and someone who knows about his past.

What exactly happened to Kuroki? And what does Haitani think of that?
I can’t wait to play this role.

Thoughts after reading the original work, “Nigatsu no Shousha”

This drama was why I started reading the manga, but I got so caught up into it that I finished reading all the existing copies before I even knew it.
As I’ve also taken middle school entrance exams, this made me recall things from that period, like the fights and friendships a six grader preparing for entrance exams goes through. While it’s nostalgic looking back on that mix of emotions from that time, I feel I can now truly appreciate and be grateful for how much effort my parents put in for me back then.

While this drama is set at a cram school for preparing for middle school entrance exams, Kuroki’s bold, yet what might come across as cold, mindset as well as Sakura’s passion, are things that I can resonate with, even as an adult.

On preparing for the role

First, I was thinking I’d look back on my own experience as a middle schooler preparing for exams, and remember all the teachers from then.

On his co-stars, Yagira Yuya and Inoue Mao

Yagira Yuya is perfect for the role of Kuroki Kuroudo, I’m really looking forward to seeing how he plays the character. Yagira-san is younger than me, but he has an air of dignity such that I think I’ll be able to become his kohai fairly easily. I’m really excited to see what kind of dialogue will come as someone who knows Kuroki’s past.

Inoue Mao-san is also perfect for the role of Sakura Mai, I’m also looking forward to the relationship between the cheerful Sakura and Kuroki, and I’d like everyone to look forward to Haitani and Sakura’s interactions.

An episode on preparing for entrance exams

Looking back, it was really hard preparing for middle school entrance exams.
I went to cram school almost everyday after school, and had to do a mountain load of homework after getting home.

And they would rank us by our grades mercilessly.

I think I survived those days well, if I may say so myself.

I took the exams for two schools and managed to get accepted into my second choice school.

That’s why I understand both the sadness of failing, as well as the joy of passing.

However, I didn’t get accepted into the school in the typical smooth way, as I was actually one of those waitlisted.

To not see my exam ID number on the list that got accepted, but to see it on the higher end of the waitlist felt like being in both heaven and hell at the same time.

Looking back now though, they were all good experiences.

A word for this drama

I’d love for everyone to enjoy how Kuroki’s words and actions blur the line between what’s common sense and what’s not, and how those around him, including Haitani, are influenced by that.

I’m sure that you won’t be able to tear your eyes away from how the plot develops.

Especially for students who are currently studying for exams.
I hope that they take a break from studying on Saturday nights during the drama, and further strengthen their motivation for exam preparation.

Producer’s comments:

One of the drama’s mottos was to not compromise on the cast, so it was a step forward for us when Kato-san agreed to take the role up.

The intellectual image that Kato-san has as both a writer and a musician is something that is essential to Haitani Jun. His experience going through middle school entrance exams himself will probably come in useful for this role too.
The leading character, Kuroki, is a super character that barely reveals his inner feelings nor his past. Haitani is a key character, as he is the only one who knows Kuroki’s true character and past. The scenes between Haitani and Kuroki are sure to be ones that you won’t want to miss.

Also, Haitani’s change in feelings towards Kuroki, the person he once deeply respected, is one that moves the story greatly.

I’m looking forward to having Kato-san pour his all into this challenging role.

“THE HEAD” is an upcoming hulu original drama series, a joint venture between Japan and Europe.

Filming for “THE HEAD” took place in in Spain and Iceland, and is scheduled to be distributed in 23 countries. Yamapi plays the role of a Japanese researcher, and is the only Japanese actor in a leading role. The rest of the cast consists of western actors. Yamapi will be speaking in English for this role.

The series will have 6 episodes in total, and will become available on Hulu beginning on June 12th, 2020. Further distribution of the show is planned through HBO Asia and other national distribution platforms.

“THE HEAD” will take place in Antarctica, promising to showcase “extreme survival”. 10 researchers went on a long mission, breaking all contact with the outside world. When some of their colleagues go to the base where the 10 researchers were studying, they are met with disaster. Many have died, and one is missing.
