Yup. Ayu is the only person who can put out a new record in 2015 using the same mixing techniques used in 2005. But, you know, Ayumi would never copy the riff, production, melody, theme, motif, and PV theme and motifs for the third highest selling single from one of the highest selling American girl groups in history and pass it off as an original ballad. So, she's still got that step above the rest.

Yuta Nakano just needs to stop doing ballads is all. He has this thing about having strings go all through the song, at an even level the whole way through, and it's like.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. WHERE IS THE DYNAMISM. Go back to doing the HAL sound!!!
Naoki Yamada isn't quite there yet but A ONE is certainly an improvement over LOVE again mixing-wise.

^the sleighbells on Ayu's winter ballads <3 And the haunting wind-like sound on Dolls. Ughh that track never gets old. I miss songs with effects like those.

![]() I looked up the arrangements of m(u) and a lot of great stuff is coming from CMJK. Even back then Yuta's arrangements were interesting (rainy day, HEAVEN for ex). I also think m(u) was partly that good thanks to the crappy demos of Sweetbox. I mean the melodies are good but the original arrangements are really (really) crappy. Ayu's arrangements team had to do something really different and maybe they were out of their comfort zone which is a good thing. Thus creative arrangements (Ladies night, B&D). Moreover, the Japanese tracks also had amazing arrangements. |

I think DAI almost always has Seiji Kameda arranging who is pretty god-like.

I love how everyone gets offended by these ripoff/copy moments in Jpop like they're new or unusual lol

It's just so hilariously obvious though, lol. The arrangement and melody is oh so Unpretty. I don't think anyone is offended but it is blatantly her version of "Unpretty".

Either way, still stupidly excited for this new mini album. I listen to A ONE almost every day, and I genuinely hope she keeps this level of confidence in her writing for awhile. I loved the experimental days of Ayu for various reasons, but no one else sounds like Ayu, so I'd much rather her do her. Though I do love XOXO and NaNaNa, and when she does fun things that are a bit different. Ayu's got some tricks left to show us, and I'm real excited. Not too into Step by step, but I wasn't that much into Zutto... either then A ONE came around.
