I'm not going to disagree on that. I think Ayu became such a huge legend since her lyrics were very relatable to the public. Even though she didn't have "great" vocals (traditionally speaking, of course) or the best dance skills, her music was so beautifully written and crafted that it made her the great artist she's been ever since her A Song for xx.

I just kinda have a feeling that general public in Japan is harder on Ayu while being more easy going towards Utada and Namie. What a pity to say the least.

The funny thing, Namie is good at dancing but never was a real great dancer. If anyone in J-Pop comes to mind who would be a great dancer, it's BoA. And Utada never was a great vocalist and she still isn't.

Totally agreed. I always found Namie to be well-coordinated and all, but BoA is something else—she can really show passion when she dances.

That TIME's article is just plain out....cringe worthy at points. And it's true. As much as Utada has somewhat of a unique voice, she's far from performing pirotechniques with it and same goes for Namie, as much of a good dancer as she is, i've seen better. And that model thing bit? She was a style icon, that's a bit more than just looks, really.
I Honestly don't get WTF is up with japanese people and Ayu and why they have such a hate relationship with her. Everytime something happens they throw unrelated old dirt all over her for no apparent reason."Her time has gone, she's old now and divorced, no longer relevant" - it's just so superficial to me and then i always feel like asking why the f are you even reading up on her then? lol

COULDNT AGREE MORE. hahha

"Haters are your biggest fans" haha

I like Namie and it is unfair for when they are saying her like old hag dramatic queen while Namie can dance and had no expression on her face but they did say nothing on that haha, Hikki is a good musician and thats it not a performer of course. Everyone has their own strength and weakness but for AYU is the one who gets mentionef the most all the time.

Because she is a LIVING LEGEND.

ayu's appeal lies definitely in her gift of writing uncompromisingly honest lyrics and having a poetic way with words in my opinion.

when I first discovered her, I wasn't very fond of her voice (her earlier works) but after reading all her lyrics I was shocked how perfectly she could describe emotions and experiences; and how much insight she seems to have. I was definitely not used to that level of profoundness from a mainstream artist!!

I was a fan ever since

I agree about the lyrics part. There were a lot of occasions where I heard a song, enjoyed it and later after learning translations of lyrics it felt so much deeper. Out of Control had such effect on me, loved the song itself but when the meaning of words kicked in, it became so much more meaningful and insightful.

I wonder if her body would be able to back like PoM era. Skinny with not to busty. For me, whatever unflattering costume she wore or bad make up at that era and before, she looks amazing.

Namie takes dancing to a different level. Those moves she does while looking dead and lifeless and still being hot af was one of the things that I was attracted to the most tbh.

After a long time not following ayu and seeing her, I must say she looks quite different imo. I don't know, not saying she looks bad but I'm not fond of what I see. but actually quite intrigued to see what's planned for next year, releases wise.

Id rather watch Ayu dancing Cossack than any of those others dance ballet. Don't think they can sing either. Kumi sounds like a blocked drain pipe. Still can't believe they let her ruin Yuna.

Ayu is also far more beautiful. The others are generic. Ayu is like a diva, doll and princess rolled into one.

Of course its all personal preference and I am extremely biased, so don't be offended LOL

On another note. How do you feel about Ayus acrobatics? They both scare and impress me.

Don't overreact. It was a simple point of view. The wording is just my dialect. And considering some of the hateful comments about Ayu of all people on here, my comment is nothing. Besides, Kumi does sound like a blocked drainpipe imo.

Generic faces was a bit rough I admit, Namie is actually very pretty. I apologise for that one. I was tired and in discomfort, had just read some hateful comments about Ayu and so i was a bit bitchy in my wording.

Also I actually like Utada

Good point, lmao.

But still, this isn't really the place to unload about this. A lot of people like these artists so its not "overreacting" when their fans fid your comments distasteful - dialect be damned. You admit to getting riled up over hateful Ayu comments, so you're no different than those you're saying are acting exaggeratedly.

...You're right. I apologise, it wasn't meant with malice but I was wrong to be so blunt and tactless

^ there's no need to tear into other women to prop up another.

About Ayu's acrobatics, I'm actually really impressed. It takes training and strength-not to mention guts- to perform such a feat. I really enjoyed the kanariya performance with it

^ I'm not. I'm being honest. It's just the way I talk. Plus it was semi jest. Hence the biased, don't be offended line.

^ I'm not taking it super personal since I'm not really into Kumi or Namie, but its still reading as not being self aware enough.
