Eeeek. What a weird choice. High tension/fast songs almost never go over well at Kohaku. (Like Mirrorcle World last year) Kohaku audiences tend to just sit there and anyone doing a Rulish kind of number ends up looking out of place. You Were, Ballad, or even Sunset are far better candidates.

Copy cat

It almost seems like they want her to embarrass herself again. They chose this right?

Generally speaking the artist chooses I believe. But Kohaku has to agree to it.

Yeah, I wanted BALLAD or You were..., particularly BALLAD because of the NHK tie-in. But it seems to be that Rule seems to be the wrong choice by my opinion.

After that and the CDL (yep, there's Rule too), I think that Ayu should just take a break and just wait until sometime in April or so (and so do Arashi too in the music operations) while I try to focus on Sayuri Sugawara, on her highly-anticipated first-ever studio album...

Making up for the lack of Rule lives around the time R/S was released?

I guess this was as unexpected as fairyland and MW were. I remember the last year it was the NHK people who requested her to open the show with MW.

Given that it was the premium CDL, its likely that she requested to go early in the show. Also, I've never heard of Kohaku selecting songs for anyone - it just seems the the basic rule is it either has to be a famous song or a single from that year and the artist can pick from there. Ayu seems to like to pick songs that she already has grand setups for, for Kohaku. She might have picked Rule because she can use the ninja theme again. Stylistically though, Rule just doesn't fit with Kohaku.

Don't count on that in terms of Arashi. They already have 2 new songs that are known and will probably be released on a single sometime in the near future.

Actually I don't even think that it was ever said if Kouhaku selects the songs for the artists or not. Shimatani performed there in 2005, the year in which her biggest hit was Garnet Moon, yet she sang Amairo no kami no otome (which was released in 2002). Even though fairyland didn't have a grand performance Ayu still sang it at Kouhaku and she could've done HEAVEN or Pride at the time. Considering that sometimes the choice of the songs seems random I am pretty sure that the people arranging the show have a big say in the selection of the songs.

hmmmm Rule. It seems she does better with ballad performances though... I wonder how it will go. though I don't mind seeing as how I love the Ninja theme lol.
Wonder if she'll be near the beginning or end this time around.

Me, I'm happy that it's Rule. I love that song and it wasn't performed often enough on TV. Maybe that will mobilize some people to buy NEXT LEVEL, who knows....

Well GIRL NEXT DOOR is going to sing Infinity and perfume are going to sing one room disco and those aren't really ballads. =P
But yeah I don't think that kohaku is having a ballad formula (at least anymore) since some artists don't sing ballads there. I suppose.

The theme of Kouhaku's year this year is "The songs which hold Power."

Of course, Rule's theme is all about having the power to do your own way, and listen to your heart, so it makes sense if you connect it with the theme.
