Banned members

I just wondered what happens when a person gets banned? (like for a month or a week)
Is he able to see through all forums or only a few?
What is a banned person able to do and what not?

I hope I am allowed to ask that...

They're not allowed to access the forum at all. Obviously, I've never BEEN banned so I don't know what it looks like, but they can't log in. They can only go on the forum as a guest; so anything that requires you to log in to see or do, they can't. At least that's what I'm pretty sure.

^I think they do if they come back creating accounts and causing trouble.

But there are ways around an IP ban.

If a member is banned, it will say so under their name: "Banned". If they show up as Guest it probably means their account was deleted, probably by the user's request.

Still, there are ways of "changing" your IP... so they can easily return creating new accounts if they want to disturb

Or they can just use anonymous surfing sites, which hides your IP and stuff. :/

What exactly do you have to do to get banned (not that I want to do anything to make myself banned)? When I look at ancient threads, like from '03, I noticed that some of those members from way back are banned, and still are, so can you be permanently banned? What did they do I wonder O___O

The usual way is ignoring warnings and infractions from the staff repeatedly, it's very rare that somebody gets banned right away. So if you've been warned several times and continue to do whatever you were warned about, you'll get a temp ban. If that doesn't help, permanent ban.

Yeh, we've had problems like that in the past... but a lot of the member who have been permanently banned in the past aren't exactly the brightest sparks in the box... so if they come back, they generally give themselves away pretty fast.

Spamming too much with off topic conversations, posting political, religious, sexual stuff, offending members, bypassing the censors and being directly rude to the staff when we've taken action on an issue that was breaking the forum rules are some of the things that can lead to a ban. However, rarely any of these result in a direct ban. Usually the staff warns. Warnings can either be a staff member posting in that thread telling people to stop the subject that is breaking the rules; PMing the members directly; clsoing a thread; or deleting and trashing the offensive posts, without any notice (some people often ignore when thisl ast one happens, but that's a type of warning). If the warnings aren't really making an effect and the person keeps on ignoring them, or if the offense was too much, we issue an infraction. Usually, 3 consecutive infractions (though it really varies according to how the staff access the situation) can either lead to a temporary ban or a temporary moderation period. After that, the infractions counting restarts and if the person refills their counter again, a permanent ban or permanent moderation can be issued.

Things that may lead to an immediate permanent ban:

-Posting explicit sexual material
-Attempts of hacking
-extraordianry situation (like doing something extremely offensive and insulting, like some user who created a fake account posting he was a friend of his and that he had been a martyr in the virginia tech school tragic accident and posted fake pictures of him after getting shot to protect 2 girls, getting intensive care in a hospital; we proved it was all fake and banned him because of how offensive/insulting it was)
-Trying to access the forum with another account while on temporary moderation or temporary ban.

A great number of users that have been permanet banned ended up like that because they ignored that last item.

It's really important that I've got to be careful when posting in the forums. In the past, when I was at a Gran Turismo video game forum, I got banned twice for rude behavior!!! AHS has been the longest-running forum I've been at without a legal ban (note that I was banned earlier this year, but it was actually a temporary forum denial of access because I was trying to re-focus on myself with my personal matters), but it's really important that we've got to read the rules before ever posting anything here at AHS.

The rules are really simple though, it's actually really hard to get banned. Just be respectful of other people, don't blurt out controversial, sexual, political stuff etc, and if you happen to cross the line you will be informed by the staff and you just don't do it again.

It's not like you have to walk around on your tippy toes being scared of being banned....
