I think it depends on the situation

sometimes a song moves me due to the melody & then there're times where it's the lyrics that moved me

unless i understand japanese, meaningful lyrics don't really matters...

sometimes lyrics made the song sounded more catchy and more memorable but to understand the truth meaning of it, you need to become a japanese ^_^ so if a meaningful is that important, go fancy a japanese poet or novelist

good melody is a must

even if you dont understand the language, melody will still a bonus for it, see the other language version of time to say goodbye? (by sarah brightman) i dont know what she's singing, but whenever i hear it, my eyes became wet

Second opition all the way. I'll praise Ayu and other artists for their meaningful lyrics, but it won't matter to me if you're writing down elborate, philosophical thoughts because if the beat or actual music itself is terrible, it's wasted potential.

I don't really bother about the lyrics unless the title sounds interesting. As long as the music sounds good

I voted for the option nro. 2.

And sometimes it does depend on what I feel at the moment. But usually I try my best to listen to happy songs when I'm sad, because I hate to be sad.

But really, if the music is good but the lyrics suck, I still listen to the song. For example Kuu's LAST ANGEL is lyrically pure crap to me but musically it's awesome.

I think it's a combination of lyrics and music. The music does need to match the lyrics though to make it a good song.

I would say it depends on the song... For example, I wouldn't expect an amazing back-up meaning for a song like Ayu's HONEY

Love songs with melodies that suit my preference, lyrics is secondary to me, or in fact it is a bonus to my liking of a particular song. I have always like Ayu songs since their melodies appeal to me, but having known her lyrics made me gain an understanding of the artist, and to develop a deeper attachment to the songs.

Depends on the songs Ballads should have meaningful lyrics, dancey songs don't really have to be meaningful, but it can't be totally random and meaningless either.

Haha, I don't speak Japanese well enough to appreciate the lyrics as I listen to the song, I go for the tunes. Sometimes I might break out translations but most of the time it's just the music for me

depends. but really I should go for yes. cause thinking about american music, there a few rap songs that have good instrumentals but really ****** lyrics like lil wayne and jay z. Its that in japanese I don't understand any of it. And I should care since I care about the lyric content in english songs. but I'm not sure.
