Avex's CD Sales Still Falling -- Blames it on CD Piracy

Here's an article I found at JapanToday about Avex's continual CD sales decreasing:

Avex sinks into red on CD piracy, lower sales

Friday, November 15, 2002 at 18:00 JST
TOKYO — Major record label Avex Inc said Friday its group net balance for the six months to Sept 30 fell into the red as CD sales took a pounding from rampant Net-based pop music file swapping and CD piracy.

Avex, whose CD sales have long been supported by signed pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki, said the net loss came to 1.32 billion yen, a sharp downswing from a profit of 390 million yen in the corresponding period a year earlier. (Kyodo News)

My comment: Sales keep falling, but Avex keeps blaming it on Internet file sharing. Are they finally starting to realize that the CCCD really is a pointless addition to the CDs? Hopefully this won't affect the production of Ayu's CDs as much as it is now by decreasing the amount of remixes.

GGGrrrr... i definately agree with you KK about the pointless CCCD... they should start doing what artisit in america are doing, selling thier cds with Extra bosnuses like Prizes or DVD's that would be really neat if Ayu'd next album had a DVD in it!!!!!!

Man, I can't believe Avex sales are still falling, even after Ayu's H single sold a million copies..... It is a big issue though. I wonder what will be the outcome...

Plus, the Japanese economy isn't so hot either. It's not doing well, so it's not too big of a surpriset hat Avex isnt doing so great.

That's true, Grantith. Hopefully this is just a low point, though. It should pick back up again.

Yeah. They should sell CDs at a cheaper price. It doesn't cost very much for the music companies to make CDs. Even if they dropped the prices a little bit, they would still make money from them. If they were cheaper, we wouldn't waste our time downloading all this music.

It's the same with me. I always have very little money to spend and usually I can only use it for school or lunch money. It takes me months just to save enough to order 1 album. That's why I always try to buy the overseas versions of her releases because they're about half as much as the Japanese ones. Plus shipping varies depending on where you are ordering it from. (YesAsia: $3.00 and up. CDJapan: $10 and up.) Even though I do download mp3s, I try to make an effort to buy the CDs also.

I agree. With lower prices as a starting point, it'd be more of an incentive to get the CD instead of finding it online. Obviously, Axex's CCCD technology has obviously been a failure, since CD ripping still occurs. If u can listen to it, it can be made into digital format. There's no way they could stop it. By charging a few dollars less than what they charge now, things may go back u[ for them.

I won't complain about the price of Ayu's CDs. Even if they were 2-3 times more expensive than now I'd still buy them. I heard Ayumi for the first time when I had downloaded a sample MP3 early last year. Now I have 3 of her CDs with more on the way.

Well according to this article - posted by nmskalmn (thankyou!) - some record label executives think that Japanese teenagers and children would rather spend their money on mobile/cellular phones than on music!

Also CDs with more remixes are harder to get the whole things of... these shorter cds are easier to get mp3s of cuz there are so few mp3s to get for you to have the whole thing.... with ayu's older singles it took me FOREVER to get all the mp3s of cds like the appears single.... the newer, shorter cds are easier to get all the songs from so there's no reason to buy it. Jeez, could avex get any dumber x_X

*koff* just my 2 cents...

While MP3s are good to get a feel for the CD I prefer to buy the CDs themselves. CDs come with some unexpected goodies like lyrics and some bonus images found in the CD booklet. Also there's that feeling knowing Ayu is getting some gratification from her fans buying her CDs.

Sure I have 380 MP3s on my system right now, used to have 150megs of Ayu MP3s I deleted after buying the CDs they're from. When I buy the CDs I delete the MP3s and make a copy of the CD for my car so I don't wreack the origonal.
