^Seiko Matsuda has 2x or 3x more songs than Ayu, probably as much hits, still, she is not on the list... The same can be said about Matsutoya Yumi...

^ Seiko Matsuda was huge in the 80's... over 20 years ago.
Ayumi is much more recent. As for the other person, never heard of them. |

Never...heard about Yuming? o.0 As an Ayumi fan that's one of the very few people you should know xD She's one of her biggest influences by far and gigantic in Japan. Haru yo, Koi is her signature song.

To understand where Ayumi's style comes from knowing Yuming(her general nickname) is essential is all I was meaning to say, just listen to Haru yo, Koi and you'll see It's like a blueprint for some Ayumi songs lyrically, musically and visually.

This song?
ayu also covered it, it's beautiful! I love ayu's version more, though the original singer pulls it off a lot better. I guess that I just love ayu's tone a lot more . But I can see why that song is her 'signature song'.

^Yeap, this song...^^ Ayu also covered one of her songs for A Ballads =) (the japanese titled one she sang at CDL 07-08)
@TeamAyu2004 Ayu was huge 10 years ago... But if she wasn't big enough today, not even the best catalog would put her on the list^~ Koda is more recent, has as many songs as Ayu and still, Ayu did better. Considering Jpop pattern of releasing, her discography is not big, just average, BTW. The outstanding think about her was being able to produce so many hits About Matsutoya Yumi, she is regarded as one of Japan's biggest popstars, singer-songwritters and performers, and also the 2nd best selling female singer (behind Ayu). She is around since the 70s and still is able to sell out 70+ dates tours^^. You can her influences from her on a lot of stuff people like Ayu and Hikki did. ^the thing is most of the people who were into Yumi 30-40 years ago are now too old and prolly don't go to Karaoke bars as much as people who are in their 20-40s who were young even when Ayu was still big. While I am sure Ayu's peak made a bigger impact on Japanese pop culture than both Matsutoya's and Seiko's did, let's wait another 20 years and then compare the results But in order for any of this to make sense people would actually have to have more detailed statistics ^^
Also I don't think you have to know who Yumi is ^^ she has nothing to do with Ayu really, even though Ayu might've been influenced by her at some point. Sure as a jpop fan in general it's nice to know the history of stuff you like, but that's as far as the whole thing should imo go. It's not really a huge issue lol |

^Well... I find it hard to determine who had the bigger impact... Music-wise, I'm still with Yuming (considering she influenced Ayu and Hikki and a lot of other people, composed Seiko's biggest hits like Akai Sweet Pea, not forgetting her own hits). Pop Culture Wise is very hard to determine... Ayu is way too recent for us to evaluete her real impact, still, her success is a reflex of the other 2 ladies impacts... we will only know it for sure once all 3 are old enough for us to compare them equally.
About the age thing influencing on Karaoke... Hibari Misora's public is even older than Yuming, and she made it into the list, and as far as I know, older people also go to karaoke in Japan, don't they? Considering age factor, Kana would be better than Ayu on the list too... Anyway...^^ |

I don't agree with you at all, that's not what makes ayu special. And I'm not sure about Namie being popular than ayu and Kuu either, but I can't say a lot about that matter since I don't live in Asia. From what I've read and seen on the internet, Ayu remains the popular one. (I mean like, when I search for album covers on internet I always get a few of ayu between them. Same goes for PV's, lyrics and news, ayu always shows up somehow! XD) But the internet doesn't always reflect on reality, soo...

Kinda agree on how Namie is more popular now but I think thats just in Japan. I live in Asia and its easier to find people who know ayu compared to Namie. (could be just my luck...) Like on my local newspaper, ayumi comes out fairly frequent if its on j-pop. Namie is coming to singapore next week, idk how that will change.

Aah, Yuming~~~ I still have so much of her to listen to - Haru yo Koi is just such a beautiful song, I can really hear echoes in Ayu's songs, especially the somewhat magical backing tracks <3 |
