I hands down will recommend BREAKERZ & just so happened that they released their latest single RUSTY HEARTS this week too

It's a pity that they will be going on hiatus in March but at the same time I'm excited to see how each of their solo projects will be like :3

I'm gonna throw this one out there... B'z (and Porno Graffiti)! If you want some non-idol girl groups, there's SCANDAL, FLiP, Rin', Stereopony, NEGOTO, and Silent Siren (their sound is a little sweet). Solo artists, I would recommend YU-A, BENI, Crystal Kay, Aya Kamiki, Ms. OOJA, ALi, Meisa Kuroki (I'm not sure if you listen to her or not...), JUNIEL, Eir Aoi, Nanase Aikawa, Marie Ueda, Kou Shibasaki, Leo Ieiri...

Matsushita Yuya is also great . He does a mixture of R&B ballads and seriously hell catchy upbeat tunes

His mentor Jin Nakamura is a genius , like seriously
