I think that the song is about her baby.
Based on the phrase 「拝啓 わたしの小さくて 永遠に世界一の天使へ」which roughly translated to "Dear Sir, To My Little and Forever Angel in the World" But since she mentioned about Ohia Lehua (a Hawaiian legend about a lover) in the end, it could have two meanings, about meeting an important person in her life (a lover who give her the baby), or literally about her newborn baby. Okay, normally I have hard times getting into these ballady songs of her. But, this time hits different. Yes, it has this typical sound, I find it a mixture between Who... and The Way I Am, but at the same time it doesn't sound like anything she has done before. It sounds so personal, like a lullabye.
I don't understand Japanese but that's what I got from it. Reading the comments here, I totally believe it is for her baby. And thank you @HTMSD for the myth. It is beautiful and deep. I am really really happy with this new song. Amazing job, Ayu! |

The melody is really nice, expected no less from Kikuchi. But can we talk about how Yuta Nakano continues to pump out uninspired full-on orchestra ballady arrangements? Like, can Ayu just drop him already... (it’s a shame cuz I used to enjoy Yutas work quite a bit)

you can totally hear her doing this during the first verse. The problem with her trying to sound cutesy nowadays is she sounds even more hoarse and dry when doing it. If she just sticks to her natural tone like in the chorus, she sounds fine. I’d even say her voice has definitely recovered considerably since Trouble, but you won’t notice it until the chorus because of the whole cutesy act in the beginning lol

Finally something new after such a long time. I love the song and I don't think it's overly cutesy, but rather like a mother singing to her baby... which makes this song even better. I really really love it! Also, the cover looks sooo good!

To me, it doesn't really cross into that sort of super cutesy mode, but it allllmooostt goes there. Considering what she's saying about in the beginning to her "dear my number one angel in the world", I think it's forgivable if she does get a bit baby-talky since she is talking to her child.

I almost fainted when I opened her instagram notification and had to wait almost 40 minutes because I wasn't home, but here it is...
The melody is lovely and I loved her voice, the "cutesy" tone didn't bother me at all, my only complaint are the arrangements, they're so generic/basic, sounds like a half of other songs she released in the last decade, but overall, I like the song. |
I think even if the arrangement is a bit samey, it seems like it's mixed better than most of her recent stuff. There's also a bit of a fullness to the song that feels like it was lacking with other recent releases. With a song like this as well, I don't know if another type of arrangement would fit. If not this sort of 'sweeping ballad' style, what else would work for a song dedicated to her son?

To be completely honest, it's gonna blend into anything else she has and i won't be able to tell the difference from any other recent ballad, i'm not feeling it, although it's a beautiful piece, i'm not gonna be playing it on repeat. HOWEVER, i am SO HAPPY it's new music and she proved us wrong :D

I might be in the minority, but I like the arrangement. I don't care that it's same old if it's good same old. Plus, I don't think a song dedicated to her child would be the best opportunity to experiment. Might turn out to be a disaster lol. Best to keep it simple for this one.

Just correcting: It's her first song written using kana/kanji but not her first song with a japanese title (Hana, kanariya, HANABI, SAKURA, Zutto..., Sayonara).

I find it to be very pretty. But then, I'm really go into her ballads these days. I find the melody to be sweet but deeper than other recent ballads, and I like her voice.
