Sorry if this has done before but I had to share..okay so my mother came over to use eBay like she does every week and I had an Ayu tour DVD on and she was like..
Mother: "I can't understand a word she's is saying, is she Japanese?"
Me: "...Yeah"
Mother "She doesn't look Japanese"
Me: "..Oy"
Mother: "Has she had sugery or something?"
Me: "I don't know..no one knows"
Mother: "Well she clearly has!"
Me: "Well it's been speculated.."
Mother: "Really?"
Me: "You have no idea..."

Well... When i first started listenin' to Ayumi, my family hate her to death because they can't stand her voice then made comment like her music is drivin' 'em mad, but things have changed now! They're really okay with it. Sumetime even my sister whistle Ayumi's Rainy Day! Hahaha... She think Ayumi is really natural and beautiful! Hehehe... So is my moma too!

The comments on Ayu's voice never end - too high, too nasal, too everything. Plus, there's been a tendency here of calling her 'Ayumi Sta-in-me-nakie', basically meaning 'Ayumi I'm-naked'.

Well when my sister first heard Ayu's songs, she thought she wasn't so great (my sister first hear "Dearest")...my sister complained about Ayu's voice, haha. But now my sister thinks Ayu is okay....she's wanting to get into Ayu to see why I'm such a big fan. :D

Everyone else in my family doesn't really have an opinion over Ayu...and most of my friends don't really have an opinion on Ayu either XD They just all know that I'm obsessed with J-music...:innocent ^^;

My mother loves Ayu (well not exactly LOVE, but she recognizes her voice and listens to a CD I made for her...all upbeat songs, of course) but she loves Gackt more. :laugh

My friend asked a for a CD of Japanese music, and I put STEP you on track 1. She loved it, but not much else by Ayu. Most of the time I hear comments about her voice as well. C'mon, people, not everyone has to have a Mariah Carey/Soul-sister voice!

Today, I was making an Ayu sig, and my Graphic Design teacher asked who she was, and said that she was really pretty.

My mom thinks that Ayu's pretty, but that's it. She also thinks I'm obsessed. (WTH?)

My mother's first reaction: "Ayumi sings like a bee!" :laugh Nonetheless she seems to really like her, as she thinks her PVs are very interesting and deep. She loves her fashion sense. When she sees Ayu-ish nails or an Ayu-ish dress she's like "OMG it's something Ayumi would wear!".

My non-anime fans friends' first reaction: "She sings like a duck but she looks nice. " They also think she's Chinese :no

My anime fans friends think of her as an "Inuyasha singer with bad songs" which is totally wrong. :( Then again, they only heard "Dearest" and "no more words" so it's not surprising. I don't like those 2 songs much myself.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, when I play my custom made jpop cd they just says it's just the same as English music but with Japanese. Sometimes I think my friends can be so ignorant. There's alot more to the music than the language. Ayu is the only singer I know that can portray so much emotion in her voice (Ayu may not be a good vocalist technically on paper but for me her voice is amazing). Shame some people can't see that..heh.. :-\

I have an ayumi picture on my binder..and when most people see it most of them responds "She's pretty" or "damn...her eyes are BIG!!!"...some of my friends thiinks she's cool, as for some other they don't really care.

Okay, usually or always in the 1st day of ur new sch or years and there will be an introduction ard. so my introduction was always "I am... I am into Jpop, huge fan of Ayumi Hamasaki" Some wld think "wow! Jpop? Cool" I have frens who like to make fun outta me T_T. They said things like " BoA is better, younger. whereas ayu is old" My god's sak, does ayu looks like shes old or 28 yrs old? Nevertheless, they are kidding! My parents find ayu ok and my sis only likes her fahsion sense. well....who cares actually, as long as i like sum1, i'd go for it and ignore negative comments.

ok this will take a lot of typing....and some of this is a little extreme or explicit so yea....my town is crappy and everyone thinks Japanese people are evil cuz of historic events...but i wont go into that.....also, a few very innapropriate words were said...but ill censore those...but anywayz...to the point...

Mom: she used to worry about me with Ayu until she heard SEASONS. then she started to like her, and now shes pretty interested in almost all the artists i listen too. YAY

Dad: he kinda accepted it early....and he was hooked when i made him watch ARENA TOR 2005 -MY STORY-. now he loves Ayu. ^-^ he calls her Yumi. he thinks the A in her name sounds a little out of place *?_?* he doesnt seem to show much interest in other singers though.

My friend, Dustin, even made up some lyrics to my name's WOMEN because of the fact that she's a porn star to him. It was just during the beginning with just music, before she sings. I really got a kick out of him trying to sing the first verse. :laugh

My parents totally don't get it. My mom is pretty racist and extremely close minded, which is really sad, but she can't stand the fact that I like music that is sung by Asians, lol. Oh well, doesn't matter now since I no longer live at home.

The only other person I know who truely likes Ayumi is my younger sister. We got into Ayu around the Loveppears/Duty time, though, so I don't think my sister likes any other Ayu's stuff after I am... She loves Loveppears, probably because that was all I listened to for the longest time when I first got that album.

A guy I briefly dated a couple of years ago seemed to like Ayu a bit. I burned him a cd of my fave songs by her and he said he was blown away. We haven't spoken in a few years, so I have no idea if he is a fan.

Some of my college friends let me play some Ayu for them. They were curious because my computer always had Ayu wallpapers and played Ayu CMs on the screensaver. They said it sounded okay, but I think it really just weirded them out.

My boyfriend LOVES to make fun of me for listening for Ayu and says I'm a complete dork for listening to Jpop. He's admitted that he thinks she's hot, but doesn't seem to like listening to her. When ever I try to turn the ipod to Ayu in the car, he groans and threatens to make me listen to his Norma Jean screaming music, which I detest. He also hates techno, so that doesn't help much either. Recently I showed him the Startin' PV, thinking he might find it funny, but he told me it was retarded. Oh well, at least I didn't dress up like a Jedi for the release of Star Wars Ep III like he did!!!! And he calls me a dork.

My first reaction when a listened her (many years away) was like "mm... i don't like her music". I was so blind then :shakehead
But I saw a video of one of her concerts and... omg! I was CRYING!! I was so moved and i couldn't explain why. I loved it, and i started to love her.

One day my mother was sitting by my side meanwhile i was watching one of her concerts and her reaction was the same: she was on the verge of tears! And she said "It's amazing how someone like her (a girl so short and skinny from her point of view) can move SO many people! Because there are a lot of people in that concert, and everybody sings and jumps all together with her!". She was very impressed XD

I made 5 of my friends listen to Ayumi and they all like her now. :) Which makes me happy. ^^ One of my friends is in love with Ayumi's clothes! She keeps saying she wants to steal Ayu's wardrobe. xD But of course I have other friends who think I'm weird cause I listen to Japanese music.

And then... my parents.... wonder why I "waste" my money "on that stuff" But it's been 3 years now so I think they are getting used to it. u.u They should be. >.> But they have been ok with it, since they let me order. :D (that's all I care about. XD)

I think i'm pretty lucky compared to most of you... because my brother was the first to actually listen to Japanese music (but i'm heaps more hardcore than him. He doesn't like it anymore) and that i'm asian and so are my friends!

My little sister likes her alot :D She said she didn't want any of her friends to listen to Japanese music so she'd be the one with the unique interest :P

My older sister had listened to Ayu before be and loved evolution and M, but she sometimes gets annoyed when I play them and it's not one of her favourites :P She says Ayu just recycled old melodies (and she's a musician!) but I had Ladies Night on the computer and she watched it and now she totally loves it! She also likes B&D because it's track 1 on (miss)understood and it keeps playing first. I think the song works better with asians!

When I bought (miss)understood she was so exited! Looking at the DVD tracklisting she saw Ladies Night and B&D and was stoked. She wanted to see the photobook too. Supprisingly, unlike most caucasian people, she thinks that Ayu has more NATURAL beauty than artists like BoA (I had OUTGROW too) because Boa looked very superficial at that time.

My mum likes her but thinks shakira is just oh-so-much better :P She loves her spanish work before her english career. She just likes the subtitles to know what they're saying... I think it's because she thinks english music's lyrics suck.

My dad had an outburst on my because she was really angry and decided to chanel it on my and my jpop, but he doesn't seem to mind anymore and he was trying to sing STEP you once!

My little sister likes koda kumi more but keeps saying "kada kumi" but after seeing the BEST ~second sessions~ limited edition and her first things concert she was like "ewwwww, I don't like her anymore. I only like people on their looks!" LOL She's only 8 years old!

My friends like her more or less. One of my friends started of loving her but then BoA popped up. I keep having to remind him that Ayu is the best by showing him her PVs hehe

My parents like Ayu’s shows (one evening I showed them and my grandparents Arena Tour 2005 and A Museum and they were like WOAH) but my father says she has chicken legs. So when we are in the car and I play Ayu, he asks “Is this that chicken leg girl?” and I just answer “yes”.:rolleyes

One of my sisters likes some of her songs like GAME, Fly High and Evolution and the other one just calls her “the chinese girl”…grrr… it makes me SO mad. Also, she says japanese and chinese it's the same.:eviltongu

:headache Ugh... that's another thing that bothers me! The majority of the songs on my iPod are Ayu, while the other less than half are Disney. I hate it when people either look through my song list or they ask, "What are you listening to?" because I hate saying "Ayumi Hamasaki, she's Japanese". ( :paperbag ) I of course don't have any problem with the fact that she's Japanese, but I'm thinking "Why do you care about what I'm listening to?" I've actually been pretty happy lately, one of my friends always wants to listen to my ipod and she really likes monochrome, she said "sounds nice." hehe

i played some orchestra versions for another one of my friends, and she says she likes how Ayu's voice is pretty and soft. <<I really value her opinion more, because she and I are both musicians and we are both usually commenting on singers, and she can really tell when a singer is bad or on a wrong note.

I finally, after MONTHS, convinced my mom that the country I adore is Japan... no china, korea, taiwan, etc.

She decorated her house completely asian, and she STILL can't tell the difference between Chinese/Japanese/Korean writing.
Like, I remember when she told me, "We have some Japanese in our family! My former last name was somethingablah!"

I made almost all my friends and family to like Ayu. No, they love her!

My mother doesn't seem to mind her that much. She recognizes Moments and Fly high. Like, she can't sing along, but she says "ya la ya ya la ya" along with the tune. :laugh

My brothers and sisters think I'm weird, but they don't exactly tell it to my face. XD Oh well.

My grandma doesn't seem to mind it. Of course, all my friends are like "o_O Okay then?" But they're my friends, so they accept what I do and how I do it anyway.

One of my friends, Annabelle, totally hated her. I'd actually made her listen to the whole MY STORY album and she said it was one of the worst experiences of her life. She said she didn't want to listen to another album, so I made her listen to Startin'. She said that Ayu's voice was too fake (wtf). Made her listen to Born To Be.... She said that it was annoying. Made her listen to teens (acoustic version)...

Her: OMG LOL I LOVE THIS GIRL'S SONGS! <3<3<3~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I told her that it was only a cover of someone else's song, and she replied, "But it's the Ayumi girl's voice, right?" I said yeah, and she opened LimeWire up and downloaded some of her songs. XD

Another thing that annoys me when they make fun of her name >.<

But when I showed friends the A BALLADS cover, they kept saying she's lesbian and ugh...there was no use going into meaning for them

Well, I have some friend who are into Japanese music, but not totally into it, like I am! I try to burn them CDs with alot of Ayu's songs on there, especially Dearest, cuz my friends are totally crazy about InuYasha (sorry if I spelt that wrong!!)

My mother is a different story. I was listening to Ayu one day, and she was like 'WTF? Why are you listening to Korean music?' and I'm like 'Mother, please. It's Japanese.', and she was like 'Why don't you listen to Chinese music, it's much better you know.' (I guess cuz we're Cantonese, she thinks I need to listen to Cantonese music, too)

And another time, I showed my mother a picture of Ayu, and I was like 'Mama, I wanna be skinny like her', and she was like 'That's crazy. How much does she weigh?', and I was like '88 pounds', and she was like 'That's crazy, you're crazy, she's crazy. Why are you listening to this crazy woman's music?', and I was like 'Mother, please, shut up'

alot of jpop artists get these....

especially in countries athat are westernized... they don't understand the language they dont even understand the style.. they cant mro elieklly relate to jpop music because they are more popular with the western music than jpop culture music.. so we habe to accept the fact that some people we cannot force to listen to our music if they dont want to... but it's happy if they foudn out that the music is great ^^

my dad told me recently.. that SweetS looked cheap.... grrrr.... and lots of other jpop artists also get offended by those people who are mroe open to western music... fu~ im so sad about it..

*giggles* My family has trouble pronouncing her name as well, but it's not that bad compared to "Sta in me nakie". :P It sounds like an indian name, like: Dances with wolves, Wind in his Hair, Stands with a Fist, Staat in haar Nakie. :D

My family doesn't really understand why I like Ayumi either, but sometimes my sister tries to hum Voyage (I'm really crazy about that song, I can't stop playing it, so that's why she knows it). She just can't get the hang of the melody, though.
Sister: *humming Voyage, but making lots of mistakes in the melody*
Me: Hihi, but it's not like that.. It's like "Bokutachi waaa, shiaawaaase..."
Sister: No it's not! It's like.. *hums the song again*
Me: No no, it's.. "shiawaaase, ni naru tame.."

My dad,mom,and my sister always complaining when I start to play her song or her PV.Seems that all my family dislike ayu.
