First time a single has shipped over one million copies since Utada Hikaru's "Addicted To You" back in 1999.

Yes, it is appropriate to freak out now.

Whether or not you find the song depends on if you have a taste for idol music.

Congrats to AKB48 :yes

wow, that's a lot. I think they're overrated but I think "Beginner" is a pretty good song so congrats to them.

Polyrhythm 25th October 2010 11:12 PM

For the sake of comparison, it was initially reported by RIAJ that their last single, Heavy Rotation shipped 650,000. The single sold 527,336 in its first week.

While it doesn't seem very likely that they can clear 1,000,000, they could probably sell around 700k :thud

Congrats to AKB48 :yes

Fixed: Whether or not you like the song depends on if you have a taste for idol music.

The audio's wrong on that video btw. I couldn't find any video with it on Youtube :\

Nackar_91 26th October 2010 12:29 AM

I'm not a fan in the least, but you have to give them some kudos for this. I know shipping a million isn't necessarily selling a million, but damn!

NintendoHTF1242 26th October 2010 01:03 AM

I feel bad for whoever is releasing a single this week lol. So gonna lose to AKB48.

Ranma Matsuri 26th October 2010 03:20 AM

^^^Yeah, all the videos you'll find will have the audio edited to prevent them from being taken down. :-/ I agree though, I think Beginner is a pretty strong pop track that it can appeal to people outside of Idol fandom.

^lol as it turns out, Momosu is releasing this week under their sushi promo persona: "Muten Musume" . But I bet people are still gonna look at it as Momosu losing to AKB regardless. XD

What the f, like two days I saw the Beginner PV on Youtube. Man, I guess King Records is cracking down on vids the way avex is.

Found another link on Dailymotion. Just ignore the man talking in the first few seconds.

i just can't get into AKB like I was into Morning Musume.

they're music, imo, is really annoying. However, as personalities I still find them entertaining.

But congrats on shipping over 1 million copies :O

If it successfully sells this number, it would become the first opening-week million seller in approximately 11 years since Utada Hikaru's (27) "Addicted to You", released in November 1999.

Debuted 5 years ago, AKB48's rapid sales growth finally reached 1 million. the 27th Release "Beginner" archived a total of 1.03 million copies shipped of its first edition. including shipments to Big Record companies and Small shops, for AKB48 this became their highest shipment number so far.

According Oricon, if it successfully manages to sell the shipped amount in the opening week outselling 1 million sales, it would be become the first single to do it since Utada Hikaru's "Addicted to You" released approx. 11 years ago. the last single archiving 1 million sales was Akikawa Masafumi (43)'s "Sen no Kaze ni natte" in May 2006. -single that took approximately a full year to clear 1 million sales

Comparing the present with 1999, the Music Industry went through an enormous change with the Digital Music Market as well as Internet Releases becoming popular. According to the RIAJ (Recording Industry Association of Japan), the CD Production reached a peak in 1998 with a total income of 5878 hundred million, and has progressively decreased until a total income of 2459 hundred million in 2009. In middle of such situation, this brilliant achievement holds a big importance.

This single includes 3 new songs and others for a total of 6 tracks included. "Beginner" feature an aggressive choreography with a never-seen before "Center Rotation" concept with 6 different patterns. the Music Video was Directed by Nakajima Tetsuya (51), known for movies such as "Kokuhaku".

AKB48 has being increasing their sales numbers with each new release. starting with "Sakura no Shiori" selling over 300,000 copies in its first week and "Ponytail to Shushu" and "Heavy Rotation" also managing to get consecutive first-week sales surpassing 500,000 copies each release.

a Tower Records' PR Commented, "Compared to the last time (Heavy Rotation) the period for preorders was smaller, but it completely outsold it. as a competition with JE's top groups, it (AKB48) makes an strong rival" . a Music Researcher also commented: "Compared with the normal Downloads and such, this time the number of middle and high-school students buying CDs is big".

AKB48 held their first Korean Live the 23th of this month. and in November they have concerts scheduled in Makao and Singapore among other overseas locations. Heading to the End-Year Music Shows, AKB48 seems to be building a lot of expectation.
