So this song is about missing someone, and being sad over losing them, pretty much. I wonder why she wrote this song. It was released years after her break-up with Nagase. Maybe she still misses/missed him? It's very interesting.

Or maybe she wrote it about someone else in her life.

It's a very emotional song for me.

What do you guys think?

Judging by Virgin Road (who is for her mother, but people tought was for a lover) I will just wait until she confirms its meaning lol

I'd say the lyrics of You were... are pretty straight-forward. Like, it's obviously about a lover, but whos lover (or ex-lover) is the question.

In Virgin Road she was singing to someone else.

and since you know so much, I'm sure you know that Virgin Road was actually announced as her first wedding song, so it has SOMETHING to do with a lover.

I think we should concentrate on finding our own meanings in a song, instead of trying to delve into Ayu's mind and look for her reasons.

^^I do know that. But the song is not ABOUT her mother. She is not singing ABOUT her mother. She's singing TO her mother, ABOUT the person she is going to marry.

I hate this song's lyrics cuz it reminds me of how much i wanted my ex before i realized he was a douchebag and a half.

This. Though I agree it's still interesting to interpret artist's own meaning behind their words.

For this reason, You were... is a favorite of mine, a real tear-jerker of a ballad.

But wondering who the song is about is like a harmless attempt at a violation of Ayu's privacy.

Pieces of Seven is right... the song is TO her mother and ABOUT her lover... It's Ayu telling her mother she is in love with someone...

+1 :D I think the reason Ayu's lyrics are so meaningful is that she doesn't tell us the meaning right there; it's left for interpretation, so it can mean something unique and special for each person ~ <3

I think You were... is a pretty uniqe song.
It sure have a lonely feeling to it, yet warm. Pretty much as the PV too. In the lyrics she also have this lonely feeling, but she doesnt want to forget her memories, cuz they keep her warm.

I think You were... is a masterpiece to actually get out that very feeling that usually is soooo hard to explain. It's both in the music, PV, lyrics and also voice. I think Ayu herself also said that she wanted to bring out this lonely, yet warm feeling.

I also want to add that You were/BALLAD is one of my favourite singles, like ever. All three songs in it (don't forget the epicness of RED LINE) are amazingly good, stunning and great. Emotions, emotions, emotions. And all three songs, in veeery different ways and music styles.

The PV is so beautiful! it matches the song really well
