Is Ayu nicknamed "Candy Candy"?

So I was watching Chibi Maruko-chan Live Action and when Maruko met her partner, her partner said "Do you think I look like someone else? Yes, I look like Candy Candy" but the subtitle said... "I look like Ayumi Hamasaki".

So is Candy Candy her nickname? so the subber put Ayumi Hamasaki instead of Candy Candy?




I only know that she's nicknamed something like... Dotakyan? :shakehead

Haha!!! That's awesome! But...I've never in my whole life heard anyone call Ayu that. Maybe the subtitler changed that line?

Maybe they changed the subtitle to someone that people nowadays would know better?

Like with the Taiwanese version of Chibi Maruko, they would change the singers' name to current Taiwanese singers just because no one would know Japanese singers from the 80s

Candy Candy was a popular manga and anime from the 70s... It's probably just a more modern and well known reference for an English speaking crowd.

omg I remember Candy Candy anime :) I think there's no connection with ayu and it's just randombly choosen by subber.

btw, what's Dotakyan? who does call ayu like that?

I read the article about avex's punishment towards Ayu in Yahoo Japan, and they wrote "Dotakyan" instead of Ayu / Ayumi Hamasaki. I wondered for a long time what Dotakyan is. And later I found somewhere said that Ayu is called Dotakyan. And I probably don't know what Dotakyan is -_-

Dotakyan means to make a last minute cancellation.

Wow! Ayu is named dotakyan because she has the attitude of making last minute changes just like what happened to "I am..." and to a coffee table shoot.

But actually dotakyan specifically refers to a last minute cancellation, and is NOT a good descriptor at all... there's a very negative connotation

With I am... she changed the shoot last minute because of 9/11, which I think was a very nice thing for her to do. As for the 'coffee table shoot'...I do remember hearing something about her releasing a coffee table photobook or something along those lines, but I never heard anything about what happened to the idea.

Never heard about the coffee table..? But I always thought Ayu had a weird kind of humor so she may not take that "dotakyan" so seriously. Besides, it might be an inside joke between her and... avex? I dunno :D
