CDL 11/12 opinions thread

So how did everybody like CDL11-12 ~HOTEL Love Songs~? :D

I gotta say in contrast to what people said about the first two nights it was incredible, one of my favorite Ayumi concerts! The staging was beautiful and Ayumi's vocals great, I did not like the way they performed Love Song though. Might write a proper review later when I'm watching a few clips of it I took again :)

inspire_rmx 31st December 2011 04:31 PM

just finished watching on ustream. i must say its definitely better than expected considering it's a countdown concert. I love all her outfits except the wig. november was stunning with the outfit and fountain. she look realli good with her hair and her voice is great =) loving the stage and the 2 new tracks is sooo nice too! a new single soon pls
The not so good parts - don like the way MOON and fated are being performed :x as well as love song. the flow of the songs are abit weird. i hope major changes will be made to the upcoming arena tour

Benikari47 31st December 2011 04:32 PM

It was my first full concert (i've watched some songs performed live but that's it)
And i gotta say that it was absolutely amazing, i enjoyed every little bit of it.

I didn't really have any problems with it, i thought the new Interludes was a tad boring but everything else was great, especially her vocals.
The outfits were stunning, the energy was there.. and she certainly made me smile.

Such a great way to start off the New Year, i can't wait to blast Party Queen :P

SKYia 31st December 2011 04:37 PM

It was amazing, I watched the live stream, enjoyed a lot, great vocals, Ayu sitting most of the time wasn't bad we joke about it, Tim was hilarious, a pity GO-Mi wasn't there.

ohsixthirty 31st December 2011 04:44 PM

i just can't see why fans were giving such bad reviews unless the other shows were very different. this show was amazing!!! i enjoyed it so much and freaking cried like a baby during RAINBOW/the countdown.

the two new songs are GREAT. i really love Party queen! Her vocals were amazing thru the whole CDL and honestly she sat down a little bit, but not much at all. it was just part of the staging.

people reallllly over reacted i think hahhaha!

noola chan 31st December 2011 05:26 PM

I just loved everything about this CDL

Beffi 31st December 2011 05:35 PM

I really liked it! After reading the reviews it's definitely not what I was expecting, but so much better. For me, I don't think the tracklist flowed very well, but I liked all the songs - especially the new ones! I'm addicted to Party queen right now, and HBYA is a really pretty song.

She didn't sit as much as I thought she would either, and even though she did sit at some parts it's not like she sat still, she still moved about (like Sparkle + MOON).

aaand I think the outfits were cute. I've never been blown away by the costumes at a CDL but these were nice, nothing spectacular (however I would have liked a different costume for Love song, but hey, it's not a big deal).

Earth_maiden 31st December 2011 05:36 PM

I was blown away by everything. The stage, the props, Ayu's vocals, the dancers, TIMMY!!!, the new songs, absolutely everything. I'm so freaking happy right now.

Next time I need to remind myself of my own advice and not pay attention to any negative feedback I hear about Ayu,. Because in all honesty, Ayu can never, ever disappoint me. Everything she does is a blessing to me so I could never look down my nose at anything she does. That's just me, I'm a glass half full kinda gal. :D

SEKAI WA KIRA KIRA!!! :luv2:luv2

tasking 31st December 2011 06:43 PM

I didn't get to watch it (we're still broke from Christmas T___T), but I did download the new songs and I must say...

PARTY QUEEN IS THE SHIZNIT.

Seriously. I had this insane urge to fist pump while listening to it. It's definitely going into my iTunes, which is a big deal because NOTHING goes into my iTunes before being physically ripped from a CD.

As for how beautiful you are, I LOVE the melody, but the harmony was a little much. Maybe it's because I have to get used to the new background singers, but it seemed they overtook a rather nice ballad, not to mention Ayu towards the end. I'll wait for the single/album version before I make my final judgement.

AyuGAME 31st December 2011 06:53 PM

from what i hear so far...her vocal is fantastic!!!
can't wait to watch it

A Loon 31st December 2011 07:02 PM

It was... WOW!
Even brought me to tears twice. Happy tears first that I was able to watch it and that it was my first live 'live' concert of hers (event though it was via ustream) and the second time during MY ALL because of the song itself and the thought the concert is just about to end.
November and how beautiful you are were my fav performances of the night, and evolution, Trauma and Boys & Girls made me dance and jump like crazy :D.
The only thing I disliked was the extra instrumental they put before the last part of NEVER EVER. But definitely one of the best New Year experiences so far! ^^

ayuuk 31st December 2011 07:57 PM

I saw it live at Ustream. I think the opening is pretty cool, and reminds me of the time last year when I was personally there at Yoyogi. I like MOON and November a lot, but I wish (as always) she could take away Boys & Girls and Humming 7/4 (haha). Overall I like last year's CDL better, but don't think this is as bad as the reviews said about the 29th and 30th shows. The only thing that bothers me is her outfits. :P

jyujiw 31st December 2011 08:56 PM

I'm still wondering if the bad reviews was meant to be to this show... xD

Seriously, it was my first live show with Ayu (even though with UStream) and was awesome. I never expected the CDL to be as grand as a usual AT, but this one made it quite well. The props, the costumes, her voice, they were in a higher level than the others years. I don't remember enjoying a CDL since PCDL from 2008.
The fact that she started sitting with the ballads, the strange flow of the setlist and the repetitive musics like Humming 7/4, evolution, Boys&Girls didn't mean a lot to me. They are common problems in all CDLs so, I'm quite used to them, after all, she has little time to prepare and rehearse, and this year it was even less!
The highlights prevails with her incredible voice in November, sending mail, how beautiful you are and fated. I loved Happening Here performed live as well.
The new dancers and back-vocals made many things sound so fresh, I loved all of them, this mini-choir ♥
To sum up, I'm pretty satisfied with this CDL, levels above of what I was expecting ^_^
PS: sorry for the english =3

*hearT_Place* 31st December 2011 08:57 PM

Thoughts:

Spoiler:
It was good, but it wasn't her best. The dancers were SO overused, that they ended up throwing off a lot of the performances. Plus, their costuming was...@_@...I half-expected them to break out into West Side Story. The stage pieces weren't all that great either.

Ayu, on the other hand, was fabulous. Her vocals were the best I've heard on a live broadcast and, while she flubbed some of the lyrics, she didn't let that mess her up (except for Boys and Girls).
do it again was a nice song to open with, but the visuals just didn't do it for me. I usually LOVE masquerade themed things, but there seemed to be no coherent story going on in this one, nor was it visually enthralling enough to stand alone as something purely visual w/o the need of a narrative. Her furry dress thing was not to my taste, and her vocals were my least favorite of the night (which says good things about the rest of the CDL)
Happening Here: I'm going to start by saying that I'm not a super-huge fan of remakes, so this was probably my least favorite song choice; I wish that she would have used one of her own upbeat, fun songs instead. That aside, this was a surprisingly fun performance, and I loved her dress. Her vocals sounded good too.
Moon-fated: Starring Maro as the cheating scumbag, and Ayu as the delusional other woman! The lyrics to both of these songs are so touching and sad, but it was hard for me to muster up any sympathy for the characters of this story; it seemed more pathetic than sad. And those beds! :headdesk: Ugh; I was not a fan. There was one part where Maro was sort of straddling the beds with his butt was sticking up in the air; it looked really odd. And then, the other dancers. WHY did the black-clad dancers have to come out during fated? And what the heck was up with the rose pedals at the end?? Luckily, though, the vocals for both songs were good, so at least everything sounded pretty.
NEVER EVER-sending mail: of all the songs I thought she would sound bad on, it would have been these two, but she sounded really nice! Her dress was pretty, too, though perhaps NOT the best thing to be wearing while performing sitting down. It was riding up like crazy. My only qualm, again, is what on earth was up with the dancers? Their choreography had nothing to do with the lyrics of either song. Had I not known the lyrics already, I would have thought both songs were about really bad breakups. I mean, when the female dancers were fighting to get in the door to their respective male dancer, it looked like the gold-clad male dancer pushed his partner out the door by the throat! It was pretty confusing.
Sparkle Ayu's lounging wasn't as bad as I thought but I didn't like how she played second-fiddle to her dancers. Her vocals were good, and I loved her costume!
Humming 7/4-evolution Not much to say about these two. They were both fun, she sounded good, and I was happy to see Yoshio and Enrique come out of hiding:P
RAINBOW(COUNTDOWN) what a perfect, PERFECT song to use for the countdown this year. And I'm not just saying that because it's one of my favorite songs by her. The lyrics make this song such a sweet, touching song to end the old year and welcome in the new year on and her speech almost made me cry. She sounded lovely, except for the end, but I think she was crying during those last few lines. If I block out the dancers and their sheets (seriously?!), this was the performance of the night.
NovemberOne of the songs I was most looking forward to, but I was a little disappointed with it. Her vocals weren't as strong, and she seemed to be plowing through the lyrics. Part of that could be because this song needs a lot of vocal control when it comes to dynamics, and she's not the best at that. For whatever reason, the performance seemed to lack the intimacy of the song. Part of that could also be Shuya. Aaaahhh, the return of Shuya flailing! This, of all songs, should have been the song were just Ayu performed; then everything, the walking, the fountains, would have made this performance exquisite, but Shuya flailing with a pained expression just brought it down so much. Plus - again - had I not known the lyrics of the song, I would have thought this was a breakup song due to Shuya's expressions and choreography.
Party queen~Happening Here Party queen is going to have to grow on me, but, as long as the lyrics are on par, I'm sure I'll be wailing "I am the PARTY QUEEEEEEEEEEN!" in my car one of these days :P But, it was cool to hear a new song during a live.
Love song I...don't really remember too much about this performance. It felt kind of off and didn't really fit, coming right after Party queen~Happening Here. Again, there seemed to be a disconnect with the lyrics and what was going on onstage.
how beautiful you are Hands down my favorite performance of the night. No dancers, b/g singers highlighted but still in the background, just Ayu singing beautifully. THIS is what RAINBOW and November and Love song should have been.
Trauma-Boys&Girls Fun, nice to sing along to.
MY ALL I would die of happiness if she ended a concert with who... again, but this is a nice song to end on.

Overall, I thought it was fun, but not as good as past CDLs. The dancers were just...I know I'm harping on them a lot, but, for CDL 09-10, RnRC, and CDL 10-11, they were used WELL, so it was disappointing to see Ayu go back to overusing them to the point of obnoxiousness. Plus, the choreography wasn't that great: half the time what they were doing didn't relate to the song at all. And the clowns... Also, there weren't really any visually awesome sets (ala I Am..) or good narratives (ala last year's Free & Easy or 09-10's Pride), and no Ayu alone (09-10's You were...) or Ayu with band (09-10's About You, last year's is this LOVE?). The stage just seemed to be...there.

Ayu's vocals, though, I was so surprised, they sounded so nice! And I love the four background singers. They blend together so well and it's neat to hear male vocals on these songs. And Timmy is awesome. He was a great performer and his MC was so cute! And, yay for Yoshio doing the MC!!! (Side note: I loved the A's before the encore! My favorites were the soccer one (Congrats again, Japan!), and the headbanging Enrique and Yoshio :laugh)

This was my first live concert (albeit through UStream), and I really enjoyed it. It was fun to watch it live, fun to dance along to TRAUMA and evolution, fun to hear her shout out to everybody watching on Ustream. It was fun to sing along and know that people in the audience were doing the exact same thing at that moment. I hope she continues to use Ustream, because this was really fun.

jyujiw 31st December 2011 09:06 PM

PS: her english surprised me. It was very good in a overall view

HilaryDuffFanboy 1st January 2012 02:42 AM

Yeah vocally she seemed to get better and better each night. Of all 3 nights she sounded worse on the 29th. Im really surprised at all the very positive reviews.... I feel it must have come across very differently on broadcast... Or maybe we had dampened your expectations.

I definitely felt like before the 29th I wanted my socks to be blown off my feet with a LOT of Ls songs, and after 29th I felt so disappointed. I didnt buy my ticket for the 31st until 3 hours before the show started, and if I didnt get a ticket I wouldnt have been devastated because the show just didnt make me feel much... if it were CDL 09-10 or something I wouldve bought a good ticket as soon as I couldve.

isthisLOL? 1st January 2012 02:46 AM

From what I heard in the reviews of people attended the problem(or one of them) seemed to be the show being messy, without clear direction and without focus. But on the broadcast we were constantly GIVEN focus by the camera, when Ayumi may have been lost in the stage for people that were there, we ustream watchers had her nicely zoomed up and saw HER first, then the rest. Messy? We were only shown small parts of what's going on on stage. Stuff doesn't work well together? We don't see the things together in one image all the time. And so on...

The one thing I read I certainly do NOT agree with though is her sitting too much, I didn't think it was too much. She was never sitting there like a lifeless doll and never through an entire song. It worked for me most of the time and I think it had a positive effect on her vocals.

freedreamer 1st January 2012 02:54 AM

It was my first time watching her LIVE!
and gosh the whole experience was too awesome. I bought tickets 30mins before the event because I figured...Ah heck it.

VOCALS: She was so good. Really really good all round. Yea some parts may have been a bit shouty but I'm glad she lowered the pitch for NEVER EVER because that could have killed. I understand how Ayu's voice has deepened but i'd rather her to deliver it nicely than force it.

STAGE: I actually LOVE the whole old-motel/hotel-ish design? It's very early 90s (or like truehappiness said, 1930s). It seemed that the show had that theme going on. From the dancers costumes to even the simplistic props. The beds, doors and even those border-like things in Love song. Kinda cool.

PERFORMANCES: I adored November, sending mail (though I am confused with the story LOL), how beautiful you are, Party queen, fated (I really love the choreo), Love song
and actually Happening Here was really fun and lively. i felt like a festival going on.
In the beginning up till sending mail. the whole CDL honestly felt a lil sad. Like, this HOTEL is really depressing. and the fact that she ended with Love song, which isnt a HIGH song kinda..made the mood less festive in a way. But I LOVE the arrangement Love song got in the end. the music and orchestra was so good!!!

(and i believe after this CDL, we fans learnt to judge for ourselves :) )

This is a good point, which reminds me of what I felt after seeing RnRC last year. I saw it live, and after leaving the arena, I felt the show was kinda "messy," like many things put together without direction. But after seeing its DVD, I have to view the show in a different light. Even though I don't like it as much as 2008 or 2009's tours, it's still not that bad. Likewise, it's possible that the audience, when not given the whole perspective, feel that the show is messy and lacks cohesion, but the viewer using Ustream does not have the same feeling?! :P

I was thinking about this as well. Even with the stream I sometimes thought "Where is her voice coming from? I can't even see her" and then the camera would zoom up to her. So I guess for the people actually there it might have been confusing in that way, especially how the dancers had the spotlight a lot of the time.
