~Bio~

Spoiler:
Elizabeth “Lizzy” Grant (born 21 June 1986), better known as Lana Del Rey, is a singer-songwriter from Lake Placid, New York, United States. Del Rey is known for embellishing her songs and music videos with an eerily nostalgic vibe heavy on Americana themes, including images of surfing, Coney Island, Frank Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe. She has also listed a large number of her artistic influences, including Allen Ginsberg, Elvis Presley, Britney Spears, Nina Simone, Nirvana, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan , The Beach Boys, Antony and the Johnsons, actor and filmmaker John Waters, artists Mark Ryden and Marilyn Minter, and photographers Juergen Teller and Philip-Lorca diCorcia.

Grant released her first professionally produced body of work in 2010, an EP entitled Kill Kill, as Lizzy Grant via Five Points Records with producer David Kahne. It was available for purchase on iTunes for a brief period before being withdrawn for unknown reasons. Soon after, Del Rey released a self-titled collection of songs, Lana Del Rey, for electronic download.

In June 2011, Del Rey was signed with Stranger Records and issued the “Video Games” single, and in October 2011 she signed with Interscope Records. Her next album, Born to Die, is set to be released worldwide on 31 January 2012 under Interscope. The second single and title track, “Born to Die,” is set for release on 22 January 2012.

The album is amazing. Video Games is one of my least faves on it and I do enjoy the song so that's saying something.
Off To The Races, National Anthem and Summertime Sadness are must listens.
Love the 50's Golden Hollywood style she's pulling off.

SURREAL__RAINBOW 30th January 2012 06:42 PM

I watched both video-clips separately and didn't know it was the same person. I'm really into both singles and they have to be my favorite songs by her now.

I'm really loving Off to the Races, Blue Jeans, Diet Mountain Dew, and National Anthem as well.

She's got pretty bad reviews from RollingStone and Pitchfork, But at the same time she's gaining popularity and doing pretty well with Born to Die.

Beffi 30th January 2012 08:06 PM

At first I didn't like the album much, but after sitting down and listening to it properly it's really beginning to grow on me. :D

I think my favourites from BTD are Dark Paradise and Video Games.

Mirrorcle Monster 30th January 2012 08:11 PM

She is really ic, my favourites are Born to Die, Lucky Ones, This is What Makes Us Girls and Diet Mountain Dew

The album really is a masterpiece. I love every track on it. It's so refreshing to hear something different from all the party anthems that have flooded the music scene lately.

SURREAL__RAINBOW 30th January 2012 09:47 PM

Wow so many of you guys like her! :) That's great *o*

I'm not back home yet, one of the first things that I'm going to do is buy the Deluxe edition of the album :D :thud

Utena 30th January 2012 10:05 PM

not a huge fan of the deluxe edition packaging though.. western digipacks are just so cheaaap.
guess I'll get the normal edition later and just put the deluxe cd in it lol

SURREAL__RAINBOW 30th January 2012 10:13 PM

Lol that's a good idea xD

I don't mind the flat western digipack because I really don't have much space left to put more CDs :thud I like it being thin and not heavy :D

setsuka 30th January 2012 10:36 PM

omg I love her, totally gonna buy her album next time I go the mall

my favorite song off the album is Off to The Races,Radio and Lolita

Welurru 30th January 2012 10:38 PM

The digipack has postcards, no?

Slightly annoyed with myself as downloaded the deluxe 'illegally' on Friday after the Irish itunes version went online, then bought the regular physical today.
Without You has now majorly grown on me and I heard about the postcards ... should have spent the extra £2 :irked

Born to Die received positive reviews from music critics :)
Spoiler:
Born to Die received positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted mean rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 67, based on 15 reviews, which indicates "generally favorable reviews". Jaime Gill of BBC Music commented that the album "isn't perfect", criticizing the production of songs such as "Dark Paradise". However, Gill concluded that Born to Die is the most distinctive debut album since Glasvegas's eponymous disc released in 2008. Slant Magazine writer Sal Cinquemani gave the album 4 out of 5 stars, and commented that several tracks had their production changed for the album, making tracks such as "National Anthem" and "This is What Makes Us Girls" less "radio-friendly". Cinquemani stated that, "ironically, the album's sole weakness is the strength of its immaculate production, which can be a bit overwhelming over the course of 12 tracks." Alexis Petridis of The Guardian also graded it 4 out of 5 stars, saying that Born to Die is "beautifully turned pop music, which is more than enough", with most melodies "constructed magnificently", while also stating that Del Rey "doesn't have the lyrical equipment to develop a persona throughout the album." Andy Gill of The Independent and Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune gave it a mixed review, and highly criticized the repetitive production.

James Lachno of The Daily Telegraph praised Del Rey's vocal ability, and said that the album "often sounds like some great lost soundtrack" to L.A. Confidential. Lachno also criticized the production, though, saying that "51 minutes of melodrama becomes draining." Time Out London's Kim Taylor Bennett noted that "Del Rey's debut definitely needs a re-edit, but she's still a promising prospect. Haters keep hating; we're on Team Lana." MTV journalist James Montgomery stated that "no matter how you view her, you've got to give Del Rey and her team credit for creating an album that fills the room and the headphones." The New York Times columnist Jon Caramanica commented that the sound of Born to Die is "slow and full", at the same time recalling a 1960 movie soundtrack. The columnist, however, criticized Del Rey's vocals, noting that "her singing still sounds like a road test", and noted that "a career founded on bad faith all around can't be long for this world."

Randall Roberts of Los Angeles Times also noted that the singer's vocals have "so much potential and yet [are] unrefined", and said that despite having stand out tracks like "Summertime Sadness" and "Dark Paradise", listening to the album "has become tiring and woozy, like if you'd taken a half-dozen Ambiens when you'd put the record on -- and now you’re getting very, very sleepy." The Observer's Kitty Empire rated the album 3 out of 5 stars, and said that, unlike pop singers Lady Gaga and Katy Perry and their "hedonic outpourings", "Lana Del Rey's partying is fuelled by a knowing sadness, and sung in that laconic, hypnotic voice, which ultimately saves this thoroughly dissolute, feminist nightmare of a record for the romantics among us." Pitchfork's Lindsay Zoladz gave the album a mixed review, and commented: "The album's point of view-- if you could call it that-- feels awkward and out of date... [it] never allows tension or complexity into the mix, and its take on female sexuality ends up feeling thoroughly tame. For all of its coos about love and devotion, it's the album equivalent of a faked orgasm-- a collection of torch songs with no fire."

Ohh yay :D I didn't have a look at those, awesome :yes

Welurru 30th January 2012 11:05 PM

Dark Paradise has just hit me. Lush *Repeat*

rossbarney2003 30th January 2012 11:08 PM

I am gonna buy the album tomorrow after I finish work. I popped in by my local HMV today and they were charging £16 for the deluxe album! I think that's a bit overpriced considering it only has 3 extra tracks on it and the cardboard packaging probably costs less to make lol.

I was waiting for this thread to be made! I have been listening to the album on repeat all week! I can't pick a favourite because everything is so amazing. She announced that she is going to re-release Lana Del Rey a.k.a. Lizzy Grant later this year so I'm really excited about that too.

Here are some very interesting discussions about Lana from people who worked with her before.

I love Video Games, not listened to the album yet but I'm very excited too. Unsure if I can handle a whole album of her, but hopefully I'll be surprised.

I love the drama she's made on the internet, I don't care if she's making up stuff or whatever, it's been worth it just for people getting SO anal about it. A glorious marketing tactic! I love all the contradictions being made by people about her, idc if she's lied about everything, it just makes her a wonderful trolling queen.
