JEWEL lyrics...

Ok, so there's been something bothering me ever since we got JEWEL lyrics translated... it's this part:

Under the grey and square sky
Is filled with all kinds of desires today

But I don't lose sight of the light among them
And can walk, looking forward
Because you always show me
That there remains a purity even in a corner of this city

it makes no sense... it's like it's missing a word or something... what is filled with those desires? it's very confusing...
so i looked up the lyrics on jpopasia n here's what the lyrics look like:

There's a world beneath this sky of grey
That is multiplying every day
With desire and all kinds of greed
And how they all pollute.
In this darkness I cannot lose sight
Of the beauty that endures in light
I can walk beyond the emptiness
Always facing you.

now even tho it has a lot more sense in english i do know that ayu didn't use the word sekai in the lyrics and it pretty much seems like a poor translation...

idk... any help? :/ is there something missing in masa's translation or how is it?

That jpopasia translation is utter crap. It seems like they tried to do singable English lyrics instead of actually translating what Ayu wrote. Masa's translation is pretty awkward, as his translations usually are, because he's not a native English speaker.

Truth be told, these lyrics are very difficult to translate into English, but this translation doesn't sound quite as unnatural as masa's.

Today too, under this square, grey sky
Hopes and desires are overflowing
Without losing sight of the light shining within them
I can look forward and walk on

Because you showed me
That there is still a corner of this town
That remains clean and untouched

^Sooo beautiful when you write it out that way.

Translationg japanese to english is a *****. I don't do it too often since english only is my second language. But japanese is quite special too and sometimes beautiful meanings in japanese translate somewhat weird in english. Pandy you did a good job with that one!

That does sound much better. I think translations usually sound weird because they're too literal, when translating into English you kind of have to make it sound more colloquial :yes

Translating is definitely an art...anyone who says otherwise is on crack. :D
