Critical Reception

Hey everyone! :)

Quick question for the Ayu scholars in here:

How is Ayu received critically? How are her albums and singles received by critics? Also, are any of her albums starting to place on any reputable best albums/singles lists in terms of jpop/rock?

Thanks everyone!!!

Japanese media don't criticize albums in the way Western media does... They consider it rude to grade someone's artistic work and also to avoid losing sponsors. The japanese version of Rolling Stone does it, but they never said anything about Ayu's music.

Western media tend to consider her work to be average.

There's VERY few actual reviews from Japan - and when they exist they tend to be in English, therefore not directed at the Japanese public. In those Ayumi tends to get 3-4 out of 5 stars. However, most I read seemed rather semi-professional. They appeared in legitimate magazines, but seemed to be written by reviewers without much experience or musical insight as those magazines did not focus on music, they just included one or two short music reviews every issue, so the people reviewing the music probably just did it as part of their regular writer job, not out of special interest or knowledge.

It will be back soon, I took a break so it would be better when I continue (and I had LOTS to do this summer so updates would have been very rare) :) Kinda like a relaunch haha
